Obama’s Trickle-Up Economics

The New York Times Original article ›
LyrArc Article Gist
Krugman points out the gains on three fronts evident from the Census Bureau report of 5.2% gain in median income of households in the U.S. He says the first is the growth in incomes of ordinary working class and middle class families, second the large decline in the poverty rate, and third the further rise in insurance coverage in 2015 for people without health insurance. He points to the steady efforts of the Obama administration to improve lives of ordinary families as working based on the Census report though results have taken time, and could have been better. The Stimulus, says Krugman could have been larger following the blow of the 2009 financial crisis and increased unemployment at the time. Janet Yellen at the inequality conference of the Boston Fed in 2014 pointed out the problems of 62 million households having net worth of about $10,000, and why this was running against the American idea of a better life for all Americans. In that sense the Census report is a movement in the right direction but a lot remains to be done.

Black people and the Obama presidency

11/05/2008

A sense that incomes fell, job losses increased and foreclosures on homes increased for black people under the Obama presidency. The same is true for the white middle class and for other minorities. Suggesting that policies that improve the economy and conditions for all middle class and working class Americans is the best hope for all minorities.

Martin Feldstein on the risks for the American Economy after failures in the Obama Economic plan.

09/12/2007

Failures to address problems on the housing front, especialy the problems for 15 million homeowners under water- see the links to opeds by Feldstein suggesting focus on these issues throughout 2008-2009. And the focus on health care which diverted attention from this problem and the problem facing bad loans in commercial real estate. Other problems are failure to get bank lending up for businesses. And the failure of Obama health care plans to control the increase in the nation's surging health care spending, instead increasing the deficit to unsustainable levels. Public sentiment as shown in WSJ/NBC polls confirm Feldstein's sense of the situation.

Looking back: An assessment of the management of the U.S. economy in Obama's first term 2008-2012

03/11/2009

Why were significant resources not invested to aid homeowners under water just as resources were provided to the auto industry? And why was there a lack of focus on unemployment in this period? The challenges were difficult but did the Obama administration do what could have been done. The auto industry bailout was an easy call considering Obama's commitment to increasing fuel efficiency during his days in Congress. Housing was a tougher call with bankers cautious and influencing policy, yet even Republicans Martin Feldstein and Sheila Bair were calling repeatedly for strong action. Tackling housing first and healthcare later after economic recovery, is likely to have produced better results, credibility for the administration, and a broad consensus in the U.S.

Length of U.S. economic expansions 1950-2015, and the forecast for the current expansion beginning in 2009

04/21/2014

Robert Hall, a Stanford economist who heads the NBER committee that studies industrial production, income, employment, retail sales, for turning points in the economy says the current economic expansion shows clear path ahead with increasing corporate earnings. Based on past experience adverse unpredictable shocks happen that end the expansion. Because of how slow this expansion is taking place and Yellen's sense of slack in the economy providing room for employment and incomes to grow, the current expansion has still a lot of life left in it. The Fed forecast is for 90 months into 2016, and the CBO forecast is for 102 months into 2017. Some of the growth in incomes and employment takes place in the late stage as happened in the Reagan expansion in the 1982-90 period.

Ultimately politicians have to deliver and you need well planned programs, specifics for action, to build infrastructure, to create jobs, and to increase wages and incomes for people working in the service economy and in manufacturing industries- how this happens as anger is being vented through slogans and the wall itself becomes a metaphor for those left out in the last 2 decades of tech based prosperity, is itself a question in the 2016 U.S. presidential elction.

Social and economic mobility for the middle class emerging as the central issue in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign

09/13/2015

Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton in the Demcratic Party, and Jeb Bush in the Republican Party, are making social and economic mobility for the middle and working class a central issue in the 2016 presidential campaign. In Britain Corbyn's election to the leadership of the Labor Party with all other candidates doing poorly, is also creating a focus on economic issues and better access to education and jobs.

The Economist on corporate profits in America and the smaller share of output going to workers- a public debate in the U.S. presidential election of 2016

03/24/2016

Most of the candidates in the 2016 presidential election have emphasized the problems of sluggish wages and lack of upward mobility in the U.S. Here the Economist looks at the situation with a small number of firms reaping the benefits of high profits and a lagging working class. Rising disparities in income and inequality are creating social discontent and voter dissatisfaction with the establishment candidates.

About 14.8% of the population, or 46.7 million people, are below the poverty level. The other roots of increasing inequality in the U.S.- global competition and sourcing, the case of the U.S. auto industry and manufacturing workers

03/24/2015

Auto parts imports into the U.S. from Mexico have increased by 86% since 2008, more than doubled for China. As wages rise in China, India is the next source country for low cost automobile parts from auto industry hubs in Gujarat and Tamilnadu, placing continuous downward pressure on manufacturing wages for the next decade, and the next. Parts imports were $32 billion in 1990, $138 billion in 2014. Workers in manufacturing make as low as $10 an hour today, similar to workers at Wal-Mart. An entire generation of manufacturing workers are now shifted from middle class to lower class from their parents generation to their own, reducing educational mobility in the American system and fewer opportunities for improvement. As more jobs are created in manufacturing than in IT related industries this is a significant hurdle for improving wages and employment in the U.S.

A push at the federal level for the minimum wage by the Obama administration in the U.S. and a push for state ballot measures by Democrats is the political strategy of Democrats in 2014. The idea is to make this a wedge issue with Republicans and tap into growing populism with the increasing gap in incomes.

Deep Poverty in the U.S. increasing from about 30% of people in poverty in 1975 to 44% in 2013

09/17/2010

Deep poverty is defined as income 50% below the official poverty line. Since the beginning of the recession deep poverty in the U.S. has increased from 42% to 44%. The striking change in America is the accentuation of the income differences with the rise in deep poverty. This is coupled with similiar changes in income differences for the middle class Americans with income concentrated at the higher levels.
