Washington Post editorial on the Obama Georgetown speech of April 13, 2009. It questions whether President Obama has the candour and courage to tackle the tough issues of deficit reduction and entitlement reform. New healthcare spending for coverage itself will add to entitlement, and it says some of the savings mentioned by the President are phony or already needed for new spending for the economic recovery and health care. At the same time the paper gives Obama good marks for his clarity and grasp of the crisis and steps for recovery, and the policy agenda in the areas of health care, energy and education. The questions about courage and candor also raise all the questions about facing upto the facts about insolvent banks that Krugman, Rosenfeld, the Economist and others have raised. Is Obama dodging the hard choices, is he dithering? On the toughest issues like foreclosures, insolvent banks, global regulation pushed by the Europeans, will he end up making inadequate or faulty choices, and when he comes around to making the tough choices, will he have lost so much valuable time as to prolong the crisis and stretch it out to many years.

President Obama and the limits of speechmaking as realities of war and deficits and the jobless sink in.

T.R.'s speech set the nation on a course that would create the modern social and economic fabric we have today. Obama's speech lacked much of the deep insight, far reaching themes, persuasion and appeal showed by T.R.

Krugman on the Obama Administration, banks, settlements and the U.S. foreclosure crisis in 2011

Failure of the Obama administration to reduce foreclosures and help homeowners. A worsening foreclosure situation leads to a continuing decline in housing prices and hampers an economic recovery in the U.S. This is something Martin Feldstein grasped very early during the 2008 financial crisis and made proposals for helping homeowners under water.

Mian and Sufi show negative effects of the lack of a comprehensive plan that included homeowner rescue of the Obama-Bernanke Financial Rescue in 2008-2011

04/15/2009

Professors at Princeton and the University of Chicago have demonstrated through their research that the lack of a comprehensive plan providing siginificant efforts to help homeowners has hurt the U.S. economy in the long run and delayed a recovery. With the middle class already reeling under one trillion dollars of student debt, high unemployment, stagnant wages, and retirees facing interest rates near zero, a weakened middle class was further affected by the lack of strong efforts on the homeowner side to balance aid to banks. This makes a consumer driven recovery that much more difficult and prolongs the pain.

Failure to stem foreclosures under the Obama administration continues inaction under Bush administration.

08/24/2007

The failure of the Obama administration to break the cycle of foreclosures begetting falling house prices begetting more foreclosures, further weakening the banks and the economy, with strong action. It continues the missteps of the Bush period and may undo much of the good work in other areas such as stimulus, restructuring the auto industry and new priorities. Inaction here is coupled with inaction in relation to insolvent banks and is likely to prove costly.

We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
