Issues raised by the graph on fuel efficiency over the post war period for the European, Japanese and the American carmakers show a huge striking gap. Not closing this gap was going to hurt Detroit carmakers. It also points to a complete lack of energy policy through higher standards, gasoline tax, and other policy actions by the government. Schwartz of NYT shows the gap and consequences.

This would bring an additional 1.1 million barrels of Canadian oil to the U.S. from Alberta oil sands. The project is being held up by the Obama administration. The Energy Department gave its approval in February 2011, but it is being held up for further environmental studies. Advances in environmental protection for oil sands development have reduced the footprint of the processes used in production of oil. This would reduce imports from the Middle East and have a favorable impact on oil prices.

The fall of the Gaddafi regime in Libya in August 2011 and restoration of democratic government will lead to a renewal of oil exports. Libya exported 1.5- 1.8 million barrels a day before the war against Gaddafi. The restoration of full production depends on the rebuilding of damaged refineries. This could take upto three years say experts. A psychological boost is not the same as the physical aspect of oil supplies on the ground says one analyst.

Back to the Future? Oil Replays 1980s Bust
Wall Street Journal 01/14/2015
Oil demand could drop by as much as 2.6 million barrels a day by 2025, as a result of the new U.S. fuel efficiency standards for 49 mpg by 2025. Fuel efficiency gains in China, India and other emerging market countries and increasing stability in the middle east, and the technological advances for low environmental impact shale oil could change the entire dynamic of world oil demand and prices. This happened in an earlier period of fuel efficency gains in the 1980's resulting in low crude oil prices.

Kudrin on higher military spending of 3% of Russia's GDP, exceeding the amount spent on education. He sees this as endangering Russia's finances. Kudrin's focus on building the Russian Stabilization Fund helped Russia weather the 2008 global financial crisis. He is one of the St Petersburg officials who helped bring Putin to the Presidency. A slowing economy and a decline in oil prices would have an impact on the Russian economy. Analysts say Russia needs an oil price of $120 to support the current level of spending.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
