For Yahoo, a Chase to the Bottom
Wall Street Journal 05/27/2010
The resignation of Jerry Yang on Jan. 17, 2012, marked the end of a role that spanned two decades. Yahoo set up Yahoo during the early days of the Internet in 1995 as a basic search tool to navigate the web. Yahoo was replaced as the main search engine by newcomer Google which used an algorithm based approach. Efforts to set a recovery at Yahoo in motion failed when CEO Carol Bartz resigned, followed by the exit of Yang. Like America on Line (AOL) which provided the basic internet connection service in the early days of the web only to be replaced by phone and cable companies with new broadband service in the next decade, Yahoo has never recovered.

The yen reached 86 yen to the dollar by August 2010. Chinese government accumulation of Japanese bonds was amajor factor in the yen's rise in 2010. By August 2011 the yen experienced a new surge going up to 78 yen to the U.S. dollar resulting in intervention by the Bank of Japan in currency markets. Investor flight to safe havens such as the Swiss Franc and the Japanese yen with the debt crisis in the U.S. and the Eurozone. The impact on export markets. The newly elected LDP government of Shinzo took strong action to reverse this and improve export competitiveness in 2013.

As much as an additional 2.5 percentage points of estimated growth could be generated in the Mexican economy by bringing competitive practices. This includes introducing competition and lowering prices in sectors ranging from telecom, transportation to banking. The most glaring example is the telecom monopoly in Mexico. Mexico's Competition Commission and the OECD study estimates about one third of Mexcan household purchases are made in monopolisic or oligopolistic sectors. Other areas for change to generate this additional growth are the oil sector, electricity, and labor laws. The Pact for Mexico signed by all of the major political parties is designed to make these changes after decades of slow GDP growth.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
