U.S. gasoline prices at the pump and the drop in price of Nymex crude oil in 2011

08/22/2011

U.S. gasoline prices are determined by the price of crude on world markets. There is a large difference between the lower price of Nymex crude and higher world crude oil prices. This causes the price of gasoline to drop very slowly at the pump with only small gains for motorists. Another factor is that refiners are maintaining higher prices.

Increasing fuel efficiency of the automobile population in China and the impact on demand for oil

06/01/2010

In 2010 with over 70% increase in the automobile population in China gasoline demand increased by about 3%. A key reason is that older fuel consuming vehicles are replace with the much more fuel efficient new models. The government is also encouraging the sale of smaller cars which have higher fuel efficiency. This has made it possible for China to make the conversion to a high automobile using nation in the space of one decade without putting to much stress on oil demand and prices.

Gasoline prices and consumer behaviour in the U.S. - 2011-2012, and in 2014-2015

02/28/2006

Rising gasoline prices take an estimated $75-100 billion out of consumer's pockets in 2011. This is offset by $112 billion added by the payroll tax cut in 2011. Increasing job growth with 750,000 jobs added in 2011 by April 2011 also offset the rising gas prices with more consumer spending dollars.
