Buyer behaviour responded quickly to the change for automobiles, with sport utility (SUV) sales rising to 34% market share in the U.S. in mid-Nov. 2014, according to Edmunds.com.

U.S. gasoline prices are determined by the price of crude on world markets. There is a large difference between the lower price of Nymex crude and higher world crude oil prices. This causes the price of gasoline to drop very slowly at the pump with only small gains for motorists. Another factor is that refiners are maintaining higher prices.

In 2010 with over 70% increase in the automobile population in China gasoline demand increased by about 3%. A key reason is that older fuel consuming vehicles are replace with the much more fuel efficient new models. The government is also encouraging the sale of smaller cars which have higher fuel efficiency. This has made it possible for China to make the conversion to a high automobile using nation in the space of one decade without putting to much stress on oil demand and prices.
