Is the Olympic model broken- is there a better way?

Montreal Olympics took a long time to pay off- developed countries have problems too. Athens is an example of a country that suffered badly just following the Olympics, with poor management of public finances, and Greece is a mid tier European economy. It is not about discriminating against developing countries, because developing countries can if they look to show off match their public transportation systems with brand new subways and bullet trains to match those in China, which would get approval from the broad public. For example it would make no sense for India to build $12 billion of Olympic stadiums and related infrastructure, when it could first match China's transportation infrastructure, road building and subway/bullet train building, as well as invest in athletic facilities for every high school in the country. The politicians are sure to be reelected that way, the country get pride in its transportation system, and instead of 4 medals in all India could match Britain and the U.S. in having invested in the same way in sports programs in its high schools and colleges. What is better than that?

Dangers to the global economy from many left behind by the tech and trade changes of the last 2 decades that have benefitted some sectors and groups and hurt others. Turning to populist political appeals those who feel left behind and suffer the effects of a lack of intergenerational mobility could lead the world into a period of protectionism and nationalist upheaval. This would reverse many of the changes that delivered prosperity for the four decades after World War II.

With Iran expected to add its production to supplies following lifting of sanctions in 2016, the Saudis would lose market share if they cut production. The Saudis are also on opposite sides with Iran and the Shiite government in Iraq, in the Middle East conflict. Russia is also on the opposite side of this conflict. As a result the Saudis are likely to stick to policy of full production with no cutbacks for the long term. When the Saudis made the policy decision at OPEC meetings in 2014 to not cut back on production as prices declined, it may have been done with the idea of revising policy later on. In 2016 with added Iranian production, this flexibility is diminished. Russia's bombing campaign in Syria, and its ability to withstand sanctions and low oil prices because of a declining ruble, and the cutoff in diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, have put all sides in an economic war of attrition. The Saudis with $630 billion in reserves also see the ability to withstand low oil prices for the long term. Low oil prices help boost economies in the U.S, European Union, Japan, India, China, Turkey, and other countries as the global economy slows down in 2016.

The careful management by Nabiullina has enabled Russia to avoid the worst effects of a collapse in oil prices. Experts say what Russia needs even more than a recovery in oil prices is the improvement in business conditions after interest rates of as high as 17% are bringing inflation closer to the target of 4%. Russia's rainy day fund of $500 billion in sovereign wealth fund, the devaluation of the rouble, help to the banking system to recapitalize, Russia's vastly expanded pension funds as a source of capital, and assistance to poorer sections of society, have enable Russia to cope with the collapse in oil prices. Yet much more needs to happen for a diversified economy and better relations with European Union to increase foreign investment and improve business climate.
