Information on fuel economy mpg for cars added to the American fleet tracks progress on fuel economy and meeting the U.S. goals of reducing reliance on imported oil. The estimate of emissions per driver show progress on reducing automobile emissions in the U.S., a key factor in overall emissions. This also indirectly shows the progress attainable in emerging market countries because the same manufacturers operate there and are able to bring new models with higher efficiency into these markets to reduce overall consumption and emissions. This is especially true for China and India where fuel needs and emissions for large demographics are becoming a major concern.

Issues raised by the graph on fuel efficiency over the post war period for the European, Japanese and the American carmakers show a huge striking gap. Not closing this gap was going to hurt Detroit carmakers. It also points to a complete lack of energy policy through higher standards, gasoline tax, and other policy actions by the government. Oil demand could drop by as much as 2.6 million barrels a day by 2025, as a result of the new U.S. fuel efficiency standards for 49 mpg by 2025. Fuel efficiency gains in China, India and other emerging market countries and increasing stability in the middle east, and the technological advances for low environmental impact shale oil could change the entire dynamic of world oil demand and prices. This happened in an earlier period of fuel efficency gains in the 1980's resulting in low crude oil prices.
