In Fed's Move on Capital One Deal, a Test of Dodd-Frank
New York Times 08/24/2011
Defense Secretary describes the plans supported by key members of the National Security team to support Syrian democracy forces in the summer of 2011- supported by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Secretary of State Clinton, General Dempsey of the Joint Chiefs, and CIA director Petraeus. The president failed to act because of approaching elections and the general hesitation to act that was displayed since the start of the democracy movement in Tunisia, and then through the movement's spread to Egypt, Libya, followed by Syria. The U.S. failed to grasp an opportunity for the Free World and create goodwill in the Arab world by standing up to its ideals of democracy and freedom.

For senior executives interviewed in this survey investing is all about capital preservation. One executive has moved all his funds to U.S. government bonds and cash, another executive has given up the 60% stock 40% bond allocation recommended by financial firm advisors and moved his savings to cash and high investment grade bonds. These executives witnessed the 2008 crash and are not taking any chances. Financial advisors of these firms continue to tell the public to stay in it for the long term. Who bears the greater risk if things go wrong? The middle aged investor risks losing the bulk of his 401 (K) as he nears retirement. Investor portfolios of the middle class in America risk further losses after losses in the 2008 crisis.

U.S. gasoline prices are determined by the price of crude on world markets. There is a large difference between the lower price of Nymex crude and higher world crude oil prices. This causes the price of gasoline to drop very slowly at the pump with only small gains for motorists. Another factor is that refiners are maintaining higher prices.

This law was passed after an earlier housing bubble which hurt homeowners badly. The law says homeowners can take loans on only 80% of the value of the home, and it bans home equity loans. Similar laws protecting homeowners could have reduced the size and impact of the housing bubble in the U.S. The failure to protect homeowners and its serious consequences for the economy is one of the major lessons of the housing bubble. Without the proper laws in place many things can and do go wrong.

The western world looks on as chemical weapons are used repeatedly by Syria's Assad government, according to some reports. The lack of leadership from the U.S., France, Britain and Germany. The failure of the Russian government under Putin to separate global geopolitics from the aspirations of the people of Syria for freedom and democracy and the use of artillery and bombing of civilian population.

The technology has to work, the apps must be right, and there has to be good content, and the selling proposition right, for product introductions. Its rare that companies get the time to work out the problems with this afterwards. All this has to be there right from the start. It works or it doesn't and the product cycle can be unforgiving for failure to come up with a superior product. The example of the HP TouchPad which failed to take off and was scrapped.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
