Business and labor organizations both support increasing the minimum wage and see a modest impact on jobs in March 2014. A key is that business has 2 years till 2017 to adjust in the new proposed law, and that the proposed $8.50 is already close to 50% of the median wage. The impact in improving wages will be felt in the lower wage restaurant and service sector, and in the eastern part of Germay. About 5 million workers would benefit. There are also exemptions for young workers of 18 years of age and workers with long periods of unemployment, a clause that could also be adopted in the U.S. to minimize impact on job loss.

As the time approaches when regulatory authority passes on to the ECB, BaFin is taking an active regulatory stance. This WSJ report says the stance is partly because BaFin does not want to be seen as having been lax when the ECB takes over supervision.

The election of AKP party members in Istanbul and Ankara mayoral elections, with the AKP winning over half the vote and the CHP and other parties splitting the remaining votes. As the WSJ editorial on the same day points out the economic boom on which the AKP contested the election is already coming to an end with the end to surging credit. By winning just over half the vote in an election with suppression of freely expressed media opinion, the AKP has left Turkey as badly divided as before. The rise of the AKP based on Turkey's economic performance for the last decade, may lead the AKP to lose sight of the fact that this was for a significant part an improvement that has taken place across all emerging markets from Brazil to India, and which is gradually unwinding. A deeply divided nation will find it difficult to attract the kind of foreign investment Turkey needs to move forward, especially considering that credit expansion and foreign investment has financed Turkey's boom, not its manufacturing competitiveness.

The reforms will be painful for Ukraine. This includes a 50% increase in the price of natural gas, tax increases and spending cuts. The IMF will provide $18 billion in loans. The EU will provide $15 billion in grants and loans. The U.S. in comparison has made only a small token contribution of $1 billion in loan guarantees. EU help is made conditional on Ukraine implementing the IMF program. The prime minister of Ukraine says the GDP could drop by 10% without the IMF and EU loans and by 3% under the IMF program. The IMF has also called for audits of Naftogaz, Ukraine's gas company because of allegations of corruption. Ukraine has some of the earlier characteristics of Greece, in that corruption, mismanagement, inept politicians, large neighbor, and the IMF program of austerity measures, are all part of the picture in 2014.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
