At Google, Memo on Gender and Diversity Sparks Firestorm

A memo at Google calls programs raising number of women in tech misguided, and disparages what women can accomplish in tech compared to men. The memo was critical of diversity programs at Google. It was written by a 28 year old engineer Mr. Damore who stated biological differences played a role in explaining the differences between men an women in tech workplaces. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google said the memo promoted "harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace." Many Google employees were critical of the memo. Experts say attributing differences to biological aspects is not true, even though the liberal leaning tendency of tech companies could benefit from different ideas. Because a big gap exists at tech companies and bias already exists favoring men in coding jobs and tech work, tech company management is particularly sensitive to this issue. Mr Damore was fired by Google management. Today Google is 69% male and 56% white, 35% Asian. A shift is underway at tech companies to correct the prevailing bias against women and minorities. A recent example is developments that led to the resignation of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick on this issue of bias against women in tech jobs.

Intel's bold plan to attract more women and minorities with a $300 million fund and plan for a 14% increase in women and minorities by 2020

01/06/2015

The plan was announced by Intel Corp.'s CEO in Jan. 2015 as tech companies in Silicon Valley come under criticism for not encouraging minorities and women to play a larger role at their companies. The $300 million will go to engineering scholarships and to help women and minorities once they join the company. The plan to increase diversity is a bold effort at one of Silicon Valley's founding companies.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
