Mexicans are angry at their own president for meeting with Trump
Mexican president Nieto's poll numbers are at all time low of 24%, according to Reforma newspaper. He took office in late 2012 and has been hurt by human rights scandal of the murder of 43 students in the state of Guerrero, corruption issues, and failure to improve the economy. The invitation to Trump to visit Mexico left even people close to the president surprised, and was criticized widely inside Mexico. It is not clear what Trump or Nieto gained from the trip. As Trump continued his talk about building a wall on the Mexican border and having Mexico pay for the estimated $23 billion it would cost. He did this in a speech to supporters in Pheonix on the same day he met Nieto, showing the use of teleprompters and prepared script was not his way of campaigning. Just as the message to black people that Democrats take them for granted cannot resonate without the basic message delivered with compassion and understanding- such as done by the presidents Bush and Reagan- so also the message to Hispanic people is suffering from the same lack of empathy. Recent polls show only 3% of blacks support Trump. McCain and Romney gained only 4-6% in the U.S. presidential elections of 2008 and 2012. The message of the wall is also baffling as an election strategy. A Gallup poll in July 2016 shows only 15% of Americans opposing a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and only 24% of Republicans. There is another problem in the strategy. The rhetoric about walls and mass deportations, and the Trump temperament combined with handling of nuclear weapons is not winning college educated women in the suburbs with polls showing Trump lagging behind Clinton by about 20 points or 4 million voters with this group. It is hard to undo the damage done by this kind of rhetoric used in the primary elections as it gains distrust of voters. It would require a bad economy with illegal immigrants taking local jobs, and handling of immigration seen as weak, for such a message to gain some national traction. Both are absent for the most part with a steadily improving economy since 2012, lower unemployment, a tough enforcement policy on deportatons under Obama that exceeded that under Geoge W. Bush, and the talk of a wall comes with illegal immigration having declined steeply since the 2008 financial crisis. The real culprit appears to be elsewhere, the triple hit taken from hollowing out of the manufacturing economy that hurt the Conservatives in Canada, the insecurity created for older whites from the job losses and hits to net worth from the 2008-2009 financial crisis, and the increasing loss of access to health care and educational opportunities with high costs. About 62 million households or the bottom half of the distribution in the U.S. have a net worth of about $10,000, a quarter of this group having zero net worth, according to the Federal Reserve's Janet Yellen at an Inequality Conference in Oct 2014. Problems no wall is going to solve, problems that built up over 2 decades, problems that will take a generation to fix. It shows the tech miracle of the last 2 decades as a mirage for quality of life of the middle and working class. Tech as a tool to a goal, not a goal in itself, is the better way forward.

With the sharp decline in immigrants from Mexico crossing the border following the 2009 recession and increased enforcement at the border, the recovery in construction has benefitted mostly native born Hispanic Americans. Of about 500,000 jobs created in the construction industry in 2014 about 315,000 went to Hispanics. The unemployment rate dropped by 5% for Hispanics in 2014, compared to less than 2.8% for blacks and 1.4% for whites, according to the Labor Department. Hispanics also took the biggest hit as the construction industry declined in 2009, the rebound is now reversing this. Hispanic employment has returned to pre-2009 recession levels in 2015.

Trump was sharply critical of the 2011 Alabama immigration law designed to promote self-deportation in calling it "crazy" and "maniacal." What changed in 2015 when Trump called for large scale deportation of illegal immigrants during the presidential campign is not clear. Two other developments happened since the Alabama law- the U.S. economy had largely recovered from the worst effects of the recession and immigration from Mexico was down to low levels, a trickle not seen in a long time as a result of the recession. A third development was that President Obama had pursued a policy of aggressive deportation in his years in office followed by an executive order on immigration late in the second term granting illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship.

By 2015 a new wave of immigration from Asia, replaces an earlier immigration wave from Mexico. The new steady source of immigrants- China, India, S. Korea, the Philippines, Japan. In 2013 research based on Census Bureau data shows China at 147,000, India at 129,000 and Mexico at 125,000 as a source of immigrants. In 2000 400,000 immigrants were from Mexico, with a decline every year after 2005. In 2000 India and China were at about 75,000 and did not reach 100,000 till 2007.

Sharp differences between Democratic and Republican parties in the the U.S. presidential election debates of 2015

Sharp differences emerge between the two parties on the minimum wage, taxes, spending and foreign policy. For domestic policy there are now stark differences between the 2 parties not seen for many years when both parties stayed closer to the centre. One has to go back to the Reagan election to see such differences. This also reflects the issue of a shrinking middle class, and a white working class that is falling behind in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The Republican candidates except for John Kasich oppose increasing the minimum wage from $7.25 an hour set in 2009. The Democratic candidates O'Malley and Sanders support setting it at $15, and Hillary Clinton supports it at $12, as advised by economist Alan Krueger. Krueger sees no significant job losses at $12 an hour. Also to be factored in is the time period this goes into effect which may span some years. On taxes Democratic candidates support taxing the wealthy, especially the top 1%, Clinton favoring taxing wealthy above $250,000 in incomes. This would pay for free tution under the Sanders plan, or an alternative plan by Clinton with similiar outcomes. The Democratic candidates are focussed on a middle class and white working class that they see as falling behind. The Republicans focus on cutting taxes to create jobs. On foreign policy Sanders is against foreign intervention, Clinton supports limited engagement differing from Obama's very cautious policy. Republican candidates such as Jeb Bush call for intervention in Syria-Iraq, Trump not favoring intervention. Other issues setting the two parties apart is the approach to immigration and Obama health care program. Donald Trump has the most strident views on immigration calling for large deportations, and Hillary Clinton calling for giving a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants. In the debates Democratic candidates repeatedly emphasize that immigration from Mexico is now practically nill following the sharp U.S. recession.
