Fareed Zakaria points out that the primary elections of the Republican and Democratic parties can pose a danger to democracy because of demagogic politicians who can appeal to popular passions to bring a fringe group or individual to the presidency. Primaries for both parties became important after 1968. Eisenhower and Lincoln won the nomination after the person nominated on the first ballot failed to win the necessary votes. Another serious problem is that the turnout in the primaries is low, so low that a 15% turnout is considered high turnout. The media attention is so great that it creates the impression that a real election has taken place when in reality about 85% of the people have not voted- as the Economist magazine points out a representative turnout would change the outcome significantly so it is not clear how much this promotes democratic process.

Till the Eisenhower period nominations were made by the Republican and Democratic parties, with compromise and moderation as part of politics. The primary process is fraught with dangers that a candidate appealing to popular passions and no serious programs can bring a fringe group or politician to the presidency. The turnout in primaries is considered high when it reached about 15%, so that the views of about 85% are not reflected in the primary wins, even though this receives so much media attention that it appears that a real election has taken place.

This WSJ editorial on April 1, 2016, cites Trump's remarks about the U.S. letting Japan and South Korea develop their own nuclear weapons and says this would encourage a nuclear arms race in Asia. Trump made his remarks in the context of North Korea, but the Journal points to Trump's lack of a grasp of the larger reasons why the U.S. for decades has provided a nuclear unmbrella to Japan and South Korea- to prevent a larger arms race. The Journal says Trump lacks knowledge of what the U.S. gets from Japan and South Korea in return for stationing troops and bases- $900 million from South Korea and $2 billion from Japan, and says it is more cost efficient for the U.S. to station at the current modest troop level than bring the troops home. Trump's failure to grasp the details and the larger issues is one of the criticisms of his campaign and his candidacy for the presidential nomination.

Other faces are the Latinos, blacks, and millenials in the background who despise Trump. Staten Island is cut off from subway access to the city and is one of the boroughs of New York with a mostly white 500,000 population.

Trump was sharply critical of the 2011 Alabama immigration law designed to promote self-deportation in calling it "crazy" and "maniacal." What changed in 2015 when Trump called for large scale deportation of illegal immigrants during the presidential campign is not clear. Two other developments happened since the Alabama law- the U.S. economy had largely recovered from the worst effects of the recession and immigration from Mexico was down to low levels, a trickle not seen in a long time as a result of the recession. A third development was that President Obama had pursued a policy of aggressive deportation in his years in office followed by an executive order on immigration late in the second term granting illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship.

The media may have also made the mistake of thinking the Trump candidacy would fade, that it was some kind of television publicity move. Other reasons played a part- the fragmentation in the vote with many candidates, the lack of candidates who could seriously connect with voter anxiety about security, drugs, uncertainty about jobs, Trump's experience as a television personality simplifying issues with slogans. The media reflection comes in March 2016 with a series of wins by Trump in southern and midwestern states. Journalists like Tom Brokaw feel stymied by the change in attitudes of viewers who did not take vetting seriously when he tried, and veteran journalist Bob Schieffer also sees a change in attitudes. Voters seemed to be sending a message about the disconnect with them of the elites. The whole process dragged down civility and values in public life with the deterioration in the campaigning to very low levels by March 2016, leaving the media a lot to reflect on and correct.
