Stuart Stevens, the chief strategist of the Romney campaign points to the Romney campaign's success in getting a majority of votes of people making over $50,000, a majority of white voters under 30 by a 7 point margin, winning the votes of a majority of America's middle class, and falling short of a win of the Electoral College by 320,000 votes. He says Obama turned Democratic party weaknesses of being too liberal and too dependent on minorities into advantages. The Pew Research Center and other expert opinion cited as the principal reaon for the defeat, Romneys failure to empathize with voters. He appeared callous in his image with Hispanic voters with his self-deportation stand, and similiarly his position on the auto bailout was shown as callous in a barrage of political ads by the Obama campaign in the midwestern states, the remark about the 47% dependent on government help simply reinforced this notion of being insensitive to concerns of the less affluent. The candidate never succeeded in shaking off impressions in the minds of voters of being a private equity executive who could not empathize with weaker sections of the community, which were reinforced by heavy negative advertising in the 2012 election. Stevens says nothing about the short sightedness of a callous immigration policy of self-deportation adopted by a former governor of Massachusetts, in the face of Census statistics showing more children of minorities, especially Hispanics, born each year than children of any other demographic group in the U.S. The changing demographics may have made a crucial difference in many states.

The Auto Industry Bailout and Mitt Romney

01/06/2008

Mitt Romney opposed the auto industry bailout. An article by Romney with the title "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," appeared in the New York Times at the time of the bailout. Auto executive Bob Lutz says he was profoundly disappointed by Romeny's position, as the situation was at a point where government loans were necessary. Auto executives see the vindication of their position in the recovery of Chrysler, GM and Ford Motor. In a bit of irony Romney, who is from Michigan, announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election at the Ford Museum in Dearborn. GM and Chrysler went into bankruptcy, but this was a planned bankruptcy, with the support of the U.S. government and a pathway set with loans and conditions so that would lead to eventual recovery. The fear was that a chaotic bankruptcy process would permanently impair the American auto manufacturing industry- and the planned bankruptcy with government conditions and loans was meant to avert this and still allow shedding or restructuring of burdensome obligations- as this way buyers would still have confidence to buy automobiles from GM and Chrysler. Auto executives point out that the private markets had already shut out GM and Chrysler from financing. Retired GE executive supported a planned bankruptcy with government help, because of the importance of the auto industry to the U.S. economy, in the Nov. 18, 2008 issue of Business Week.

08/20/2012

Romney finally the man he truly is says Brooks, as he uses the opportunity stemming from years being caught up in Republican orthodoxy to say who he truly is and has stood for. Including owning his term as governor of Massachusetts, the most liberal state in the U.S., where he had to work with Democrats and represent the entire people of the state.

Election campaign financing strategies and fund raising efforts that led to Republican Romney's defeat in the U.S. presidential elections of 2012

11/07/2012

The primaries hurt Romney in two ways. He took too extreme a position on immigration to win close elections in primaries, and he ran short of money by the end of the primaries giving the Obama campaign an opening to define him by early heavy spending in the key states. The fund raising efforts also were away from the midwestern states and led to a lack of campaigning presence in those states during the summer leaving him badly behind in voter perceptions especially because his record at Bain Capital was open to attack.

Racial polarization in the 2012 U.S. presidential election between Romney and Obama

01/18/2009

The figures tell the story- Romney gets 91% of his support from white voters. He is ahead by 23% over Obama among white voters- a Washington Post /ABC News poll showing Romney at 60% and Obama at 37% in the last week of Oct. 2012. Obama's support from white voters is dropping to the level in the Mondale-Reagan election when Mondale was in the 30's -Reagan 65% Mondale 35% among white voters in the 1980 election. Obama's victory in 2008 came from winning 43% of the white vote. Whites made up 74% of voters in ABC polling in 2008- the same number as in 2012. About a 2% shift towards Hispanics and other minorities is expected every 4 years according to experts as U.S. population becomes more diverse. The suburban women with college degrees with strong views about contraception and women's issues were a factor in helping build core support for the Democratic party and Obama to get to the 43%. Another factor is the younger women without college degrees who are now shifting towards Romney and the Republicans over economic issues. Surpprisingly after the foreclosures and high jobless rates hit minorities hardest support has still not fallen for Obama with these groups in polling results.

The president of the Pew Research Center on the results of the U.S. presidential election of 2012- Romney's failure to empathize with voters

11/13/2012

The Republicans fielded a weak candidate in Romney for empathy with voters and Romney failed to capitalize on the economy. This is shown by exit polls. Failure to be in sync with voters on pathways to citizenship also formed a part of this lack of empathy. On the general Republican position of less activist government exit polls show voters favoring activist government going down from 52% to 43%, and on the healthcare law voter disapproval is 49% compared to 44% for voter approval.
