People who worked with Romney in the Mormon church describe the experience of Romney who started as an "iron rodder" walking the straight path, and gradually learning of other people's experiences that led to learning and growth and showing a new openness. In contrast to his "47%" remark about people dependent on the government, here he is seen telling another church member Barlow, that what bothers him most and what he has thought a lot about is how to genuinely help the poor in his church. Over the years he learned to compromise with Mormon feminists who sought larger roles in the church and was able to make the progress from being less flexible to being open to other ideas and perceptions. In other situations he allowed unorthodox progressives in the Mormon church to play a part in the organization and teach. The outreach efforts Romney participated in actively included efforts in the inner city and working with immigrants from Haiti, some of whom were illegal immigrants. This is a detailed well researched account from talking to many people active in the church organization and in the church community by Jason Horowitz of the Washington Post. It is one of the rare glimpses of the life of Mitt Romney inside the church. Because of the public perception of Mormonism there is a distance kept with accounts of life in the church, and Romney has shown the same reticence to talk about the church. Seen as a church it is is like other churches, Catholic or Protestant, with the same challenges that face all churches- keeping up the size of the congregation, the poor, immigrants, church organization, raising contributions, getting people to donate hours of work to the church activity. It is one of the ironies of the 2012 presidential campaign that Romney as a member of a Mormon church in a predominantly Catholic and Protestant world has remained reticent about his experiences and how it shaped him. And also remained reticent -till the last months of the campaign with the demands for authenticity growing strident- about how the experiences as governor of the liberal state of Massachusetts had shaped him, this time as the number of Republican politicians in sharply liberal states were a distinct minority in the Republican party. To voters this meant not knowing who he was beyond Bain Capital, the perceptions of which doggedly pursued Romney till the reticence became unbearable in the final weeks of the campaign.

Romney says Obama would reduce money for Medicare by $716 billion-the material fact here is that Obama health care law by reducing payments to providers by $716 billion is likely to push up premiums for insurance. Premiums are already going up and Romney gives the estimate of $2500 in increased premiums so far. Obama says Romney will cut taxes by $5 trillion and this will lead to harsh spending cuts on education and other improtant areas- the material fact here is that Romney says he will not cut education only programs that do not justify borrowing money from China to pay from them, and he will make his reduction of taxes to induce economic, also make it revenue neutral by removing or reducing deductions and loopholes especially for the rich and higher income groups. One approach he says is to flat stop deductions beyond $17,000 and lower for higher income people.

Both candidates prefer reticence about defining aspects of their lives fearing voter prejudice. The election campaigns of both sides leave out identity politics. Both campaigns also prefer to keep Romney's record managing the 1999 winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and as the governor of Massachusetts out of the public view for different reasons. This adds to the sense of aloofness of both candidates, one a professor and the other a business executive, who were distant to begin with.

Mitt Romney opposed the auto industry bailout. An article by Romney with the title "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," appeared in the New York Times at the time of the bailout. Auto executive Bob Lutz says he was profoundly disappointed by Romeny's position, as the situation was at a point where government loans were necessary. Auto executives see the vindication of their position in the recovery of Chrysler, GM and Ford Motor. In a bit of irony Romney, who is from Michigan, announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election at the Ford Museum in Dearborn. GM and Chrysler went into bankruptcy, but this was a planned bankruptcy, with the support of the U.S. government and a pathway set with loans and conditions so that would lead to eventual recovery. The fear was that a chaotic bankruptcy process would permanently impair the American auto manufacturing industry- and the planned bankruptcy with government conditions and loans was meant to avert this and still allow shedding or restructuring of burdensome obligations- as this way buyers would still have confidence to buy automobiles from GM and Chrysler. Auto executives point out that the private markets had already shut out GM and Chrysler from financing. Retired GE executive supported a planned bankruptcy with government help, because of the importance of the auto industry to the U.S. economy, in the Nov. 18, 2008 issue of Business Week.

Bain Capital originanted the the merging of management consulting with private equity, for consulting firms to take equity ownership in companies seeking a turnaround. The practice of loading the company with debt, and taking out capital for the investors through a sequence of policy actions, even if this led the company to bankruptcy, became the hallmark of this kind of investing. In most cases this led to large layoffs, was adverse to building human talent in the company, as it was designed solely around generating large and early payoffs for investors. Goldman Sachs was the private equity partner for Bain Capital in the Dade company investment.

The evangelical Christian vote helped president George W. Bush win Ohio in 2004 by 2 points, countering the Democratic vote in Cuyahoga county around Cleveland.
