Mitt Romney opposed the auto industry bailout. An article by Romney with the title "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," appeared in the New York Times at the time of the bailout. Auto executive Bob Lutz says he was profoundly disappointed by Romeny's position, as the situation was at a point where government loans were necessary. Auto executives see the vindication of their position in the recovery of Chrysler, GM and Ford Motor. In a bit of irony Romney, who is from Michigan, announced his candidacy for the 2008 presidential election at the Ford Museum in Dearborn. GM and Chrysler went into bankruptcy, but this was a planned bankruptcy, with the support of the U.S. government and a pathway set with loans and conditions so that would lead to eventual recovery. The fear was that a chaotic bankruptcy process would permanently impair the American auto manufacturing industry- and the planned bankruptcy with government conditions and loans was meant to avert this and still allow shedding or restructuring of burdensome obligations- as this way buyers would still have confidence to buy automobiles from GM and Chrysler. Auto executives point out that the private markets had already shut out GM and Chrysler from financing. Retired GE executive supported a planned bankruptcy with government help, because of the importance of the auto industry to the U.S. economy, in the Nov. 18, 2008 issue of Business Week.

A debate in which for the first time Romney makes clear positions appealing to all income groups that would be expected from a former Republican governor of Massachusetts, the most liberal leaning state in the U.S. Romney said his plan would generate jobs and growth at a time when over 23 million Americans were out of work. Obama said he would defend the midddle class but did not say what he would do different from the economic policies followed in 2004-2008.

Romney's conveys to voters that he looks favorably at giving coverage to people with preexisting conditions and other popular aspects of the health care law, and he reminds voters that he got everybody in his state insured. He is also careful to show that he will not reduces taxes by a huge amount to worsen the deficit, but enough to stimulate business investment, simplify taxes, and close loopholes and deductions to offset reductions in taxes.

The U.S. coal mining industry surged with the demand for metallurgical coal from the Chinese steel industry. Prices reached a high of $330 after the floods in Australia's Queensland coal producing region in 2011. Now prices have dropped by half with the return of Australian coal and the slowdown in China. This is resulting in layoffs in the coal industry and hard times in W. Virginia and the Appalachian coal mining region in 2012.

The evangelical Christian vote helped president George W. Bush win Ohio in 2004 by 2 points, countering the Democratic vote in Cuyahoga county around Cleveland. McCain failed to connect with evangelicals in 2008. The evangelicals, and pastors like Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham, the head of the Southern Baptist Convention, and evangelical Christian organizer Ralph Reed are organizing support for Romney in 2012. Obama's support for gay marriage is one issue, another is alienating of Catholic communities in some aspects of Obama legislation. The selection of a conservative Catholc from Wisconsin, Paul Ryan, as running mate is also creating increased fervour among evangelicals.

The figures tell the story- Romney gets 91% of his support from white voters. He is ahead by 23% over Obama among white voters- a Washington Post /ABC News poll showing Romney at 60% and Obama at 37% in the last week of Oct. 2012. Obama's support from white voters is dropping to the level in the Mondale-Reagan election when Mondale was in the 30's -Reagan 65% Mondale 35% among white voters in the 1980 election. Obama's victory in 2008 came from winning 43% of the white vote. Whites made up 74% of voters in ABC polling in 2008- the same number as in 2012. About a 2% shift towards Hispanics and other minorities is expected every 4 years according to experts as U.S. population becomes more diverse. The suburban women with college degrees with strong views about contraception and women's issues were a factor in helping build core support for the Democratic party and Obama to get to the 43%. Another factor is the younger women without college degrees who are now shifting towards Romney and the Republicans over economic issues. Surpprisingly after the foreclosures and high jobless rates hit minorities hardest support has still not fallen for Obama with these groups in polling results.

George Romney was more spontaneous and aggressive than the cautious Mitt Romney. A problem this created was during the 1968 presidential campaign when he said his early support for the Vietnam war was because of a lot of brainwashing, which suggested to voters that he lacked foreign policy experience. He withdrew shortly therafter. This and the lack of preparation and funding for that 1968 campaign has had a significant influence on Mitt Romney. During the final weeks of the campaign the assets of the more aggressive father have come back from memory to Mitt Romney as he makes an effort to come back from behind. Mitt's wife Ann says he scribbled the word "Dad" on a page at the lectern before the beginning of the first presidential debate with Obama.

Between 2004-2011 China's steel making industry expanded rapidly leading to huge demand for metallurgical coal from the Appalachian region. In 2012 prices have dropped about 50% to $170 a ton for met coal, leading to layoffs and closing of mining operations. Patriot Coal of St. Louis filed for bankruptcy protection in 2012.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
