The evangelical voters in the 2016 U.S. presidential election

Reed points out that Trump has the support of only one third of evangelical voters- mostly because of strong positions on immigration and terrorism not for positions on religious issues such as abortion that are not as important as these 2 issues for these voters. It is also apparent says Reed that these voters are blue collar and without a college education, and respond to the tone of the message rather than the substance.

U.S. presidential candidate Ted Cruz is gaining support from establishment donors and supporters. Some donors and Republican party experts agree with Cruz's assessment of previous elections lost by the Republican party- a critical element in the loss was the failure to rally the party faithful, including its evangelical base of support. By turning out in higher numbers, and by gaining the support of independents, and the white working class which today supports Donald Trump, this view holds that the Republican party could overcome other obstacles to win in the 2016 presidential election. Cruz held his own state of Texas winning by 17 percentage points, and won in Oklahoma, Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, after winning the Iowa caucuses. By March 2016 violence prone minority hate rhetoric against minorities at Trump rallies had separated responsible voices in the Republican party from the Trump efforts to divide the party.

The evangelical Christian vote helped president George W. Bush win Ohio in 2004 by 2 points, countering the Democratic vote in Cuyahoga county around Cleveland. McCain failed to connect with evangelicals in 2008. The evangelicals, and pastors like Jerry Falwell and Billy Graham, the head of the Southern Baptist Convention, and evangelical Christian organizer Ralph Reed are organizing support for Romney in 2012. Obama's support for gay marriage is one issue, another is alienating of Catholic communities in some aspects of Obama legislation. The selection of a conservative Catholc from Wisconsin, Paul Ryan, as running mate is also creating increased fervour among evangelicals.
