Emerging market perceptions changing in 2014-2015 with new leaders or political changes

10/01/2014

New leaders in India and Indonesia in 2014 have given a new confidence to investors, whereas leaders in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa have lost investor confidence. Erdogan for Turkey, Zuma for South Africa, and Rousseff for Brazil, do not inspire the same level of confidence. Other leaders who have changed investor perceptions for emerging markets are Putin in Russia with the sanctions. The rapidly changing situation with democracy protests in Hong Kong is eroding investor confidence in China as well, as Jinping in China is seen as adopting the Putin Way.

U.S. 2014 Navy exercizes in Subic Bay, Philippines, and in Hawaii (Pacific Rim) signalling hope and wariness in U.S.-China relations

07/02/2014

China is participating with the U.S. in the Pacific Rim naval exercizes in Hawaii. At the same time the naval exercizes in the Philippines are intended to counter China's influence and territorial claims in the region. Japan's shift in interpretation of Article 9 of the Constitution to allow "collective self-defense" is also intended to counter China and ally N. Korea's missiles. The shift is approved by Japan's cabinet at about the same time as the naval exercizes. U.S. experts on China such as World Bank head Zoellick see peaceful development and cooperation but there is wariness following territorial claims and counter claims in the Pacific. South Korea remains wary of Japan but is also wary of China's ally N. Korea, and generally supports the U.S. efforts in the Pacific. The key is to manage tensions in a constructive way with cooperation and dialogue.

Book Review of "The Fourth Revolution" by Micklethwait and Woolridge of the Economist

05/30/2014

The authors describe the need to further reduce the size of the public sector and provide the example of Sweden which reduced the size of the state from 67% to 49% with good results. France has shown concern about a large public sector which reduces efficiency and growth. India is likely to shift away from the large public sector under the new Modi administration in 2014. Developing new alternatives would also create new energy and create new options to the state capitalism model of China and Russia for developing countries. The crony capitalism in Brazil with state supported development has serious limitations as shown by sharply slowing growth and other problems.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
