The Roots of the Migration Crisis

Walter Mead describes the roots of the refugee crisis in 2015, as millions of refugees flee Syria, Iraq, and other countries in the Middle East, lying in the failure of governments throughout the Middle East to accomodate modernity, women's rights and technological progress into the old Islamic thinking. He says he sees this in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Tunisia, and other countries in the Middle East. The Arab Spring which aroused so much hope for the people of the region has floudered in the failure of both the Islamic leaders, the military elite, and civil society to come up with a consensus rooted in what a modern Islamic society that accomodates modernity, women's rights, the participation of people in their government, technological progress should look like. The Western nations of Europe and the U.S. also underwent soul searching to come up with a modern Christian society through its own struggles, which the Islamic societies have failed to do; and as a result floundered and broken up by sectarian, religious and military conflicts. Mead takes the long view, yet falls short when it comes to how European leaders and societies face individual challenges to bring their own Christian faith and ideals into the real world, in the way chancellor Merkel has responded in Germany. Europeans have had their own period of conflicts and civil wars, the refugee crisis and refugees in chancellor Merkel's words who "have gone through the hell of a civil war" are very real, and how each European responds defines who he is and how far Europe has come from its own dark days.

Instead of working it has proved dysfunctional and led to failures in economic development, failure in building ademocratic state, and left the country in abackward state with many divisions along political and tibal lines. The new identity being sought would keep Islam out of politics and set new priorities.

Islamists say they are misunderstood. They only want freedom to go the mosque and individual freedoms. One Islamist leaders says westerners do not understand them and think they want to lock up their women in boxes. Islamist and Muslim Brotherhood rebels did a lot of the hard fighting against the Gaddafi regime and Belhaj is one of the leaders running the capital Tripoli. See the interview with Belhaj by Rod Nordland in the New York Times, Sept. 1, 2011. Belhaj says he is grateful to NATO and the West for the help in fighting Gaddafi and holds no rancor- even though he was turned over to the Gaddafi regime by the CIA in this amazing account by Nordland.

The huge difference in the U.S. and German resettlement of Syria's refugees. About half the population of Syria is dslocated in a tragedy of massive proportions for a country of 23 million- additional numbers of refugees are spread out in Iraq and Libya. The U.S. withdrawal from the Middle East under the Obama administration led to a worsening of the crisis in Iraq, Syria and Libya, and the unraveling of the fragile situation in these countries. The result is the flow of migrants to Europe by the hundreds of thousands in 2015. German chancellor Merkel will be remembered in history for the courage to say in Sept 2015- "If Europe fails on the question of refugees, its close connection with universal civil rights will be destroyed." And for rallying German society to the work of integrating refugees with the openness of educational institutions and civil society, especially in the urban areas.

Trade and commerce was an essential part of the great Islamic societies in history, giving them a large degree of openness and liberal ideas. This is not always present, but is so to a large extent in long periods of prosperity. For various reasons needing more research, this changed and reverted to less receptiveness to science and technology in the 19th c. and 20th c. , a period when great advances in medicine, industry, transport, were made in Europe and America. Buddhist societies confronted this influence in 19thc and 20th c. with warinness and suspicion, but later changed to open embrace for Japan in 19th c. , S, Korea in 20th c. , China in 21st c. , and India (as Buddhist-Hindu) in 21st c. The potential is for this to change with Indian and Indonesian Muslims acting as a catalyst for Islam swinging back to its usual mode, but can take a few decades to develop.
