‘Hello, [INSERT CITY HERE]’: Trump’s Rally Script Settles Into a Groove
WSJ 10/31/2018
A NYT report shows that the support of traditional Democrats in Blue states such as Massachusetts and in the midwest has helped propel Trump to a series of wins in Republican primaries in Jan-March 2016. There is also some correlation with a higher degree of racism, according to this NYT report. This is how Trump was able to combine wins in Mississippi and Massachusetts. Conversely states with higher serious churchgoers such as Utah and Texas have supported Ted Cruz. This theory has exceptions because of John Kasich's win in Ohio, Cruz's win in Maine and his close contest with Trump in Louisiana and Missouri, showing that a number of factors are at work, including Trump's ability to appeal to voter sentiment on issues, the fragmentation of the Republican vote, and the lack of connection with voters on issues of terrorism, security, struggling middle and working class people issues, of the other candidates. The profiles of Trump voters from his rallies show these concerns listed by his supporters.

Trump was sharply critical of the 2011 Alabama immigration law designed to promote self-deportation in calling it "crazy" and "maniacal." What changed in 2015 when Trump called for large scale deportation of illegal immigrants during the presidential campign is not clear. Two other developments happened since the Alabama law- the U.S. economy had largely recovered from the worst effects of the recession and immigration from Mexico was down to low levels, a trickle not seen in a long time as a result of the recession. A third development was that President Obama had pursued a policy of aggressive deportation in his years in office followed by an executive order on immigration late in the second term granting illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship.

The conservative, cautious, and plodding nature of politicians works in favor of Donald Trump in the early U.S. Republican primaries. Trump style is to say what is on people's minds at the time, but rivals fail to say it, and yet make points strategically. Here Monica Langley of the WSJ describes the Trump style and the controversy it is generating in early 2016.

The media may have also made the mistake of thinking the Trump candidacy would fade, that it was some kind of television publicity move. Other reasons played a part- the fragmentation in the vote with many candidates, the lack of candidates who could seriously connect with voter anxiety about security, drugs, uncertainty about jobs, Trump's experience as a television personality simplifying issues with slogans. The media reflection comes in March 2016 with a series of wins by Trump in southern and midwestern states. Journalists like Tom Brokaw feel stymied by the change in attitudes of viewers who did not take vetting seriously when he tried, and veteran journalist Bob Schieffer also sees a change in attitudes. Voters seemed to be sending a message about the disconnect with them of the elites. The whole process dragged down civility and values in public life with the deterioration in the campaigning to very low levels by March 2016, leaving the media a lot to reflect on and correct.

Eduardo Porter of the NYT reflects on what happened in Brazil in chaos after soaring popularity of Lula as long as the commodities boom lasted, with no real foundations. The extremes of populist policies and of free markets without mindfulness of the risks can be dangerous to the livelihoods of the vast majority of people in the Americas. As Brazil struggles, Mexico with the opposite model struggles from lack of good management, Argentina emerges from decades of experimenting with extremes in either direction, and the U.S. mulls over its future direction in the general election of 2016, there is a moral for the Americas extremes without mindfulness are dangerous. Cruz and Sanders offer different versions of direction. Cruz and Sanders a version of policies too far in one direction, Trump channeling anger but lacking any clear statement of policy. The fate of nations and peoples hangs in the balance- needed is mindfulness and thoughtfulness in taking the path forward, clear of illusions that it will be easy going forward from mistakes in the past.

Democratic party strategist Axelrod writes about Trump (and Cruz), both having a disdain of conventional politicians and calling it like it is. Axelrod says he should have known. He writes about his theory from a memo in 2006 for president Obama's prospects- of point and counter point in presidential politics where a newcomer with opposite qualities than the incumbent can gain popularity, especially when the electorate is growing weary of the outgoing president and conditions change. The lame duck year for the outgoing president only reinforces his ineffectiveness.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
