The author is a resident scholar of the American Enterprise Institute. He says conservatism and the Republican Party have failed to recognize the problems of the American working class, leading to the rise of Trump. He adds that it will take more than one election cycle for Republicans to change this, it will take a lot more effort lasting many years. Speaker Ryan arranged a forum on working class problems, poverty and lack of opportunity, but only after Trump had made appeals to older white working class Americans who have done poorly in the last decade, making him the front runner in the race, and relegated Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio to single digit support.

U.S. presidential candidate Ted Cruz is gaining support from establishment donors and supporters. Some donors and Republican party experts agree with Cruz's assessment of previous elections lost by the Republican party- a critical element in the loss was the failure to rally the party faithful, including its evangelical base of support. By turning out in higher numbers, and by gaining the support of independents, and the white working class which today supports Donald Trump, this view holds that the Republican party could overcome other obstacles to win in the 2016 presidential election. Cruz held his own state of Texas winning by 17 percentage points, and won in Oklahoma, Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, after winning the Iowa caucuses. By March 2016 violence prone minority hate rhetoric against minorities at Trump rallies had separated responsible voices in the Republican party from the Trump efforts to divide the party.

A resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute says the Republican Party and conservatism have missed the problems facing the working class, leading to the popularity of Trump. He sees dangers in the deportation of 11 million Hispanic Americans that Trump has called for, and says conservatism and Republican ought to mean many positive things to working Americans that have missed out on opportunities in the last decade- that it will take many years and more than one election cycle to change this. In fact Speaker Ryan called for a forum on poverty and inequality for working class people, only after Trump increased his popularity by appealing to older white Americans left out by changes in the economy in the last decade.

Howard Dean was governor of Vermont and Sanders was Mayor of Burlington, Vermont. Both candidates draw white, educated, affluent voters of the Democratic Party. But the situation is different in 2014, with the Democratic Party now 40% female, and many ethnic minorities represented in the party. Dean's major issue was his opposition to the Iraq war. Sanders says his positions are more class based and calls for a revolution to give working class Americans a chance for upward mobility.
