Jim Lehrer of PBS deserves a lot of credit for the remarkable way in which he handled the new format of 15 minute segments designed to draw out the distinctions between the candidates in the first 2012 U.S. presidential television debate.

How Jim Lehrer of PBS handled the first presidential debate of 2012 and the new format

10/06/2012

The new format was to divide the debate time into 15 minute segments instead of a question and giving the candidates 2 mintues to respond. The idea was to draw out the distinctions between the candidates and get them to talk to each other. Lehrer decided to try out the new format and he says it is a good format with a little tweaking. It does help to have a skilled moderator and candidates who carry out constructive as happened in this debate in October 2012. Lehrer deserves a lot of credit for having done this so well and caps a long and remarkable career on PBS guiding the American people through the issues facing the country for three decades.

Obama said he would defend the midddle class but did not say what he would do different from the economic policies followed in 2004-2008.
