Karl Rove on the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the parallels to the 1896 election

In his new book on President McKinley, Rove describes the election of 1896 in which McKinley won the election against a populist politician William Jennings Bryan. Rove sees the situation today with large immigration, new technology, and inequality, similiar to the situation McKinley faced. Rove says the continuing weak response of president Obama after Paris attacks provides an opening for Republicans. He also says Hillary Clinton is likely to distance herself from the policies of President Obama on the Middle East as voter opinion shifts after the Paris attacks in Nov. 2015. The 1896 election leads to a landslide for McKinley, who makes Teddy Roosevelt his running mate in 1900 leading to a long period of Republicans in the White House, and the U.S. emerging as a leader in world affairs. McKinley, a two time governor of Ohio fought the 1896 election on the platform of keeping the gold standard, and high tariffs to protect local industry. The electoral map looks the complete opposite of what it is today with the Republicans having the north, midwest and the west, and the Democrats having the Southern states. The foreign policy at the time was about the suppression of the Cuban independence movement by the Spanish, leading to the Spanish-American War and Spain ceding Cuba, Guam and the Philippines to the U.S. The U.S. later found itself suppressing a independence movement in the Philippines.

The Paris attacks and lax security checks prompted the U.S. Congress to take this action. Most Republican governors have opposed taking in Syrian refugees. Liz Sly of the Washington Post provides an excellent account of the different phases of the war in Syria from its beginning in the Arab Spring in 2011 as a democracy protest movement, to rebels fighting the Assad regime, the entry of Russia and Iran into the conflict, to current situation with the Islamic State and other rebel groups in control of different areas in Syria. The war ends up turning half of the Syrian population of 22 million into refugees or displaced status, with millions in refugee camps in Turkey, and hundreds of thousands moving towards Germany for asylum. As the conflict evolves it becomes more complicated than when pro-democracy rebels were fighting the government in Damascus- as Russia intervenes in the conflict and the U.S. stays on the sidelines, the Kurds defending their areas with Turkey worried about Kurdish autonomy, and the Shia-Sunni sectarian aspect dividing the Shia Iran supported government in Iraq and Sunnis in Iraq, and France under Hollande switching earlier policy to conduct an air campaign after terrorist attacks in 2015.

WhatsApp, Facebook, other services and useful apps are driving increaing internet use in India by 2015. India has about 402 million internet users by Dec. 2015, according to the Mobile and Internet Association of India. Mobile data use has increased to 276 million people. The price has come down to $100 for a smartphone which is the primary access for the internet. Internet packages sell for about 11 rupees or 0.17 U.S. cents for 30 megabytes of mobile data use. Only one in ten in rural areas have smartphones creating a large potential market for internet companies. The idea that India will eventually catchup with China in market penetration for smartphones is leading to high value of internet companies in India.
