The Obama administration announced a policy of increasing the number of refugees accepted in fiscal 2017 to 110,000. This will be an increase from 85,000 in 2016, and 70,000 in the prior 3 years. Secretary of State Kerry says the target is consistent  with the idea that all countries need to do more, and if we could do more we would. After 3 years of cautious policy president Obama now follows Chancellor Merkel's lead.

The U.S. Congress and president Obama on background checks for admitting Syrian refugees

11/20/2015

U.S. president Obama says he will veto Congressional legislation for a series of background checks that would make it difficult to absorb 10,000 Syrian refugees in 2016. The Paris attacks and lax security checks prompted the U.S. Congress to take this action. Most Republican governors have opposed taking in Syrian refugees. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in Germany and Austria.

We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
