Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton in the Demcratic Party, and Jeb Bush in the Republican Party, are making social and economic mobility for the middle and working class a central issue in the 2016 presidential campaign. In Britain Corbyn's election to the leadership of the Labor Party with all other candidates doing poorly, is also creating a focus on economic issues and better access to education and jobs.

At one point Denmark under a previous government Denmark welcomed refugees with the words COPENHAGEN, and civil society is still friendly to refugees. But the new coalition government after an anti-immigration party won 22% of the votes in elections held in 2015, does not support taking in refugees. Refugees in Denmark now see Sweden as a favored destination similar to Germany.

How Apple Is Escalating the Wireless Wars
Wall Street Journal 09/11/2015
From the small town of Erfurt, Germany, Katrin Bennhold provides this exceptional report in the NYT of how one city in the heart of Germany with a medieval past is coping with the influx of refugees. Under Germany's quota system, Thuringia gets 2.5% of new refugees and Erfurt 20% of that. How well the experiment works depends on how it is working at the local level.

The cost is about the same as the price of the phone plus Apple care coverage for the iPhone 6s. Users get to choose the carrier and can upgrade to a new phone every year, giving Apple a core buyer base to stabilize sales, as newer iPhones have only small incremental improvements. Since 2010 the average upgrade time is up to about 26 months from 18 months, according to experts, and Apple hopes to reverse this trend to keep selling more iPhones.

‘I Dream in Fruit’: What Hunger Looks Like in Syria

WSJ's reporters Thomas, Bradley and Geiger tell this exceptional story of a change posted on the internet site of Germany's agency tackling asylum applications that it was no longer enforcing Dublin protocols (requiring applications to be handled at the country of first entry), and how it emboldened refugees at Keleti station Budapest to begin a march of thousands on highways to the Austrian border. The events of these days in early September 2015 led to German chancellor Merkel's later statements about the "fundamental right to asylum for the politically persecuted knowing no upper limit." It had not started that way, events and the courage of the refugees led to Germany responding in a way that could not have been imagined with "Wilkommen refugees" signs at entry points.

Apple responds to the need to stabilize iPhone sales as newer phones 6s and 6s Plus in 2015 have only small incremental improvements. By directly selling iPhones with 24 monthly payments Apple can offer its own yearly upgrade and get customers to buy new phones every year, stabilizing core sales. It also helps reverse a trend to iPhone users keeping their phones longer- from 18 months in 2010 to 26 months in 2015. During 2015, iPhone sales with the larger displays increased sales by 50% for three quarters of 2015 over the prior year! This kind of sales surge is now beyond Apple, hence the need to shift to other strategies, including getting control of the sale of iPhones from wireless carriers such as Verizon and AT&T.

A Frontline Solution to Europe’s Refugee Crisis
Wall Street Journal 09/25/15
We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
