A Dent in Europe’s Populism
In a closely watched election Mr. Wilders of the far Right in Netherlands gains 20 seats, far behind centre right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy of prime minister Rutte who won 33 seats. The Dutch Green party which is strongly pro- Europe went from 4 seats to 14 seats, the Christian Democratic Appeal party gained 19 seats and the pro-European Democrats 66 party also gained 19 seats. In the 150 member parliament Rutte needs 76 seats to form a new coalition government, and he is likely to ally with these other parties to form a new government that supports strongly the European Union. This editorial in the NYT says the people of the Netherlands turned out in large numbers to support pro-European Union parties. Next the focus is on France and Marie Le Pen's challenge from the far Right. Cyber threats from Russia are seen as a way to discredit otherwise strong candidates, and the French government is taking this seriously. Chancellor Merkel said she "was very happy that a high turnout led to a very pro-European result," and president Hollande said this was "a clear victory against extremism."

Denmark reverses open stance to immigration and refugees following the election of a new government in 2015

At one point Denmark under a previous government Denmark welcomed refugees with the words COPENHAGEN, and civil society is still friendly to refugees. But the new coalition government after an anti-immigration party won 22% of the votes in elections held in 2015, does not support taking in refugees. Refugees in Denmark now see Sweden as a favored destination similar to Germany.

A wave of migrants made their way on a dangerous boat journey to Europe in 2014-2016. The refugee crisis in the war zones of Libya, Iraq, Syria and Yemen, with added migrants from Africa for people seeking a better life, is leading to one of the largest movements of migrants since 1945. It also poses problems of uncontrolled immigration in Europe, where immigration is one of the top issues in elections and in public debate-in Sweden, Britain, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy. By 2017 the migration slowed after action by the European Union countries to control it from countries in Africa.

The left oriented Podemos internet based party won 8% of the vote in Spain's European parliamentary elections of 2014. The Socialist party and the Partido Popular when combined failed to win over 50% of the vote in the Spanish election reflecting the deep discontent with unemployment at about 26% and only slight job gains. In France Hollande's Socialist party did worse with only 13% of the vote in EU parliamentary elections. In Britain Cameron's Conservatives came in third behind the Independence party and Labor party. Only in Germany, Netherlands and Italy did the ruling parties do well.
