HTC Beefs Up China Push as U.S., Europe Lag

The marketshare of companies in China's smartphone market for the 1st quarter shows Samsung with a commanding lead of 25%, the Apple iPhone has only 6.5% of the market, Huawei comes in ahead of Nokia with 12% compared to Nokia's 11%, and close behind is ZTE with 11%, Lenovo with 8%, CoolPad with 6.2%. Motorola has 4.8%. HTC slipped badly and is now at 2.6%. With other companies having 13% of the market. The market is largely fragmented today with Samsung the leader. It also shows the very fluid nature of the market with many new entrants and rapidly changing positions for Samsung, Nokia and HTC. Nokia finds itself facing competition from many new entrants and a rapidly expanding Samsung, which accounts for its suddenly eroding position.

Nokia's investment in R&D over the last decade exceeds that of Apple and Google. Yet the company blundered into a failure to invest this money effectively to stay ahead in new products like the smartphone that would eventually take over the market. At critical junctures Nokia decided to focus on ite existing strengths and not prepare for changing technologies that would upend the marketplace. Organizational dysfunction and slow decisionmaking compounded the process. Too much of the emphasis was on pure R&D without a focus on new exciting products with newer technologies.

Lenovo is positioning itself to become the dominant smartphone company in China, second only to Samsung. It is creating a brand presence in China's rural areas for PC's and mobile devices which is likely to further enhance sales. This effort extends to other emerging markets in Asia such as India and Indonesia. Other strategic decisions include bringing in more manufactuing in-house compared to competitors HP and others in the PC industry.
