President of Bolivia Claims Victory in Election
New York Times 10/12/2014
Brazil's international reserves of $14 billion are the highest of any country including China as a percentage of GDP. For Bolivia it provides a cushion of 14 months of imports. The country's income from natural gas exports to Brazil and Argentina is flowing to a new middle class, as the percentage of people in poverty decline from the 38% the year before Morales took office in 2005 to 24% in 2014. Following a different strategy from that recommended by the IMF, Morales is now seen favorably by the IMF and World Bank's representatives who call his policies prudent. It shows the need for flexibility in fresh thinking for the IMF and the World Bank considering local conditions and needs and avoiding standardized approaches.

Mr. Singer's hedge fund paid about $170 million for Argentine bonds acquired at a price well below the original value of the bonds following the debt crisis of 2001. He is suing the Argentine government for $1.5 billion including interest. His hedge fund firm manages $25 billion in assets and has returned 14% over the years. The long period this issue has festered should convince borrowers of the need to borrow carefully only where the capital can be put to productive use and generate adequate returns to pay off borrowings. Sovereign borrowers also need to build up the sovereign wealth funds to prepare for unforeseen contingencies and exercize vigilance in spending. Greece had a similar problem and paid a financial firm over $500 million to get out of a difficult situation in 2012, even as pensions were being cut.

Janet Yellen reemphasizes her view of focussing on full employmen and price stability. She sees regulatory supervision, including higher capital reserve requirements and regulation of short term funding, as better able to fulfill the task of restricting bubble type activities. Yellen says she is aware of the effects on emerging markets of the Fed's policies, in a question and answer session with Christine Lagarde of the IMF.

Pope Francis of Argentina is compared to Pope John XXIII who came from a rural area of Northern Italy. Pope John XXIII was highly informal and visited poor neighborhoods and churches similar to the manner of Pope Francis from Buenos Aires. Both Popes came to lead the Catholic Church at times of great stress, Pope John following the end of the Second World War and a general awakening to the need for maintaining peace in Europe. Pope Francis at a time of increasing inequalities in society throughout the world especially after the global financial crisis of 2008. Pope John Paul of Poland came in at a time of awakening also in the nations of Eastern Europe as nations were free from communist regimes. With three extraordinary leaders, the Catholic Church can continue to play an important role in the lives of people throughout the world, and offer hope and direction in global conflicts and crises.

Tougher to Drill for Oil in an Emerging-Markets Storm
Wall Street Journal 02/10/14
We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
