Pope Francis of Argentina is compared to Pope John XXIII who came from a rural area of Northern Italy. Pope John XXIII was highly informal and visited poor neighborhoods and churches similar to the manner of Pope Francis from Buenos Aires. Both Popes came to lead the Catholic Church at times of great stress, Pope John following the end of the Second World War and a general awakening to the need for maintaining peace in Europe. Pope Francis at a time of increasing inequalities in society throughout the world especially after the global financial crisis of 2008. Pope John Paul of Poland came in at a time of awakening also in the nations of Eastern Europe as nations were free from communist regimes. With three extraordinary leaders, the Catholic Church can continue to play an important role in the lives of people throughout the world, and offer hope and direction in global conflicts and crises.
