Two differing types of attorneys will represent Mr. Trump in a New York courtroom- one Mr. Tacopina from New York's Brownsville neighborhood who studied law at the University of Bridgeport and the other Susan Necheles of Puerto Rican heritage who attended the University of Rochester and Yale Law School. Susan Necheles is meticulous, does extensive preparation for the courtroom and stays away from the press. Tacopina is a frequent commentator for television channels and appeals to Mr. Trump because of this. Both have litigated cases for many years in New York.

Janet Yellen is nominee to be Treasury secretary in the new administration of Joe Biden. The economic rebound from the pandemic that started in the summer is faltering without additional stimulus and help to businesses and people affected by the pandemic. She is the former chairman of the U.S. central bank the Federal Reserve.  Yellen faces a divided country and likely a divided Congress on many issues facing the country. She says of these divisions and the challenging task she faces of forging compromises- "Right now we live in a country where people look at the same set of facts and come to diametrically opposite conclusions, so that is a big challenge to anyone who takes that job, to build support for your policy outcomes." Yellen believes that the slow recovery after the 2009 financial crisis was because of a lack of a big enough stimulus and policy consensus across parties and with public opinion backing this up. During the pandemic in March 2020 the first stimulus was passed for $3.3 trillion  with support from the Congress and the Trump administration. Today Congress is split on the second stimulus with Democrats pushing for about $2.2 trillion for aid to state and local governments, jobless workers virus testing strategy. Republicans calling for about one third of this or $650 billion to help small businesses and industries such as tourism, retail and airlines. Because  interest rates are near zero much depends on getting an effective stimulus for speedy economic recovery. Conversations between the Treasury Secretary and the Federal Reserve, America's central bank, are critical to getting things done. A lot also depends on how Democrats and Republicans can put aside differences for the sake of getting the recovery back in place where it was during the summer. The media has a role to play in not stoking differences in public opinion which was the case close to the election to an unprecedented degree. One critical aspect of American process in getting things done is to bring Congress and the public with an elected president. Without a conciliatory approach and humility few presidents have succeeded as Congress and public opinion is also critical to getting things done. The House changes every 2 years so that even with  majorities- made transient by the founders of the constitution- nothing is certain without getting the other political party on your side. For the sake of the country and the people devastated by the pandemic, the professional class, media and politicians, Congress and the president need to bring a clear and transparent willingness to look at the national interest going forward.  ...

 This message from Pope Francis is especially relevant today during coronavirus. Francis says of the mistaken priorities of today away from healthcare, education, infrastructure and "coherence" in society and the pain and hardship this is causing in society, there is much that can give people thought to reflect on. Francis  new book, "Let us Dream: The Path To a Better Future" will be out December 1. "If we are to come out of this crisis less selfish than when we went in, we have to let ourselves be touched by others’ pain." He cites a line in Friedrich Hölderlin’s “Hyperion” that speaks to him, about how the danger that threatens in a crisis is never total; there’s always a way out, that where the danger is, also God plants the saving power, a way out. And not simply a way out, God also gives human beings a chance to grasp for and hold onto renewal if only one makes the endeavour. As it says in the Bhagavad Gita God gives man a chance to warm himself near the fire, only those who make the effort to go to the fire can feel the warmth, it is a choice man has to make. And again God says in the Bhagavad Gita that he is not partial to any man. Ever since the global financial crisis hurt working families in the middle and lower classes hard in 2009 because of banks misbehaviour and greed, Pope Francis has called for countries in the western world to heed his warnings about the dangers of greed and corruption to us all. Even George Washington warned of this in his inaugural address, so the warnings are not new. Reminding people once again he says "we cannot return to the false securities of the political and economic systems we had before the pandemic. We need economies that give to all access to the fruits of creation, to the basic needs of life: to land, lodging and labor. We need a politics that can integrate and dialogue with the poor, the excluded and the vulnerable, that gives people a say in the decisions that affect their lives. We need to slow down, take stock and design better ways of living together on this earth." The pandemic has exposed the paradox that while we are more connected, we are also more divided. Francis is never tired of warning that the present political and economic structures and people who staff them have not felt others pain, so he reminds us it is hard to build a culture of encounter in which we meet as people with a shared dignity, within a throwaway culture that regards the well-being of the elderly, the unemployed, the disabled and the unborn as peripheral to our own well-being. Where only self preservation counts. Francis reminds us of the Christian concept that no one is saved alone. This is not just an abstract concept. When Francis was only 18 years and a second year student he was admitted to a Buenos Aires hospital for a severe respiratory disease, so severe that he lost a part of his lungs. He remembers the day August 13, 1957. He understands this pandemic from personal experience. He knows what it is like to be on a ventilator. Surgeons removed the upper right lobe of his lung. Francis struggled to breathe. He was  saved Francis says not even by the doctors, but by a Dominican sister, a senior ward matron, who had been a teacher in Athens before being sent to Buenos Aires. She understood that Francis was dying and after the doctors left asked the nurse to double the prescription dose of penicillin and streptomycin. Sister Cornelia Caraglio, knew better than the doctors from her regular contacts with sick people what they needed, and she had the courage to act on that knowledge.      ...

India needs more dams to collect, store and channel water to where it is needed. The rainy season is becoming shorter, with alot of the rain as much as 50% falling in about 15 days. This means some areas are flood prone and the water if not collected in dams would be lost. THe other problem is that a lot of water is wasted without proper maintenance of the existing dams and storage areas. Much of the state governments investment in this is ineffective so water is lost for lack of maintenance. The state irrigation departments are underfunded, overmanned and corrupt and are not upto the task of maintaining the existing irrigation systems. This presents ahuge problem because India is estimated to lose the equivalent of two thirds of the new storage it builds to siltation. Between 1992-2004 India built 200 medium size irrigation projects but the area irrigated by these projects actually shrank by 3.2 million hectares. New dams are not coming on fast enough and India has 200 cubic metres of water per person, compared with 1000 cubic metres in China. Groundwater -with the governments providing free electricity to farmers for pumps- is used widely but this is becoming unsustainable. The WOrld Bank estimates that 15% of India's food production comes from "mining" which is the use of unrenewable groundwater supplies. Many of these wells are drying out. Also free electricity is causing electricity boards to have insufficient funds for expanding supply causing chronic shortages. One quarter of India's electricity is given free or cut rate to farmers. And politicians trying to reform this system are often booted out of office. All this as 400 million Indians have no electricity. The answer is not merely to raise prices in places like Haryana state- where according to aWorld Bank study farmers with electricity spend 25% of their incomes for it and to repair engine pumps- but also for the utilities to improve supply. Ostrower and Cameron point out that Dennis Muilenburg, the new CEO of Boeing, is first and foremost a engineer. He comes from a different background than former CEO Jim McNerney. McNerney graduated from Yale University, and followed a path of consulting with McKinsey, work at P&G, moved to General Electric where he worked under Jack Welch for many years, before the position at Boeing. This was a path for many CEO's at the time. As the U.S. returns back to its manufacturing and technological roots and with the manufacturing and technical problems at Boeing and Airbus, Muilenburg brings the right focus to meet future challenges. Muilenburg graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, a master's degree in aeronautics and astronautics from the University of Washington He joined Boeing as an engineering intern in 1985, and is at Boeing since 1985. Since Dec. 2013 Muilenburg was president and COO, leading Boeing's effort to use automation to cut costs of developing and building commercial jets. Before that job he headed Boeing Defense, Space and Security, where he is credited with improving the operating margin from 9% in 2009 to 10.8% in 2013. He cut costs and closed facilities as the division share of Boeing revenue declined from about 50% in 2009 to about 34% in 2014 following defense spending cuts, but did this while maintaining higher research spending to drive efficiency improvements, say analysts. At Boeing Muilenburg's first 14 years were spent designing jets and military systems, some for contracts such as the advanced fighter jet program which Boeing lost to Lockheed, before moving to Washington D.C. for a new unit selling air traffic management services. He says the move was a period of personal growth for him more than any other period in his career. Muilenburg enjoys cycling, and puts in about 120 miles per week around Chicago...

After repeated efforts to open up Mexico's oil industry in the last decade by the PAN party and stalling by the PRI opposition, Mexico finally makes the sorely needed changes to its constitution which will allow foreign oil companies to compete with Pemex. In Dec. 2013 the PRI Nieto government and the PAN join together for the two thirds majority in Congress to change 3 key articles in Mexico's constitution- 25, 27, 28. These articles are vestiges from an earlier era of nationalistic oil laws following the nationalization of the oil industry by President Cardenas in 1938. Brazil under president Cardoso opened up its oil industry by passing consitutional amendments in 1997, allowing foreign oil comapnies to compete with Petrobras. Argentina is in the process of attracting western oil companies to develop its shale oil reserves. Mexico faces the prospect of becoming a oil importer by 2020 if oil production remains stagnant at current levels of 2.5 million barrels a day, creating a new urgency for action. Pemex officials say Pemex can only come up with $25 billion a year of the $60 billion needed to develop Mexico's deep water reserves and shale oil and gas reserves. Under new legislation Mexico will allow profit-sharing contracts, production-sharing contracts, and licenses where foreign oil companies would pay royalties and taxes to the government. A major change supported by the PAN party is setting up a sovereign oil fund modeled on the Norwegian Oil Fund to send part of the oil income into long-term savings and pensions. A trust run by Mexico's autonomous central bank will manage the fund, according to a final draft. The changes are important for the Mexcian economy to increase the growth rate, and coupled with other changes for competitiveness and anti-monopoly legislation in the domestic economy. Additional changes coming from the Pacto de Mexico to the education system and other areas, form a major bipartisan effort for the first time in Mexico's recent history to improve Mexico's competitiveness in the global economy....

The most important segment with future implications for growth is the young people segment, and here American companies are really weak. Of the "millenials" or people born between 1979 and 1985, those who consider a Ford when shoppng for a small car are only 7%. These are Ford's own numbers according to the Wall Street Journal. Ford and GM are moving their emphasis to small cars. Ford did this at the Los Angeles Auto Show with the new Fiesta arrriving in the market in early 2010, and GM will compete with the Honda Civic with its Chevy Cruze due in August in showrooms. To do this Ford and GM are remodeling their showrooms. To do this 3000 Chevy stores are taking on a new focus on small cars and 26,000 sales people are being retrained by end of 2009. Kurt Mcneil, Chevy's sales chief, says their emphasis is on giving a good response to online customers by having salespeople able to talk fluently about fuel efficiency and compare with Honda and Toyota. For Chevy the showroom remodeling involves having a greeter at the reception desk not a salesperson, this is who one first sees when walking into a dealership. The improvements costing $200,000 to $600,000 per location are being paid by dealers with GM offering financial incentives for the work. The way Ford is approaching it is to use social media like Facebook to a bigger extent. It will send a social media consultant to its largest 800 dealerships or one fourth of all stores to build an online infrastructure to connect to local buyers and offer online updates, videos, and games related to small cars. Ford, GM and Chrysler have only 21% of the small car market, according to Autodata, and Ford has only the aging Focus to offer today. In 10 months of 2009, 19% of 8.65 millon light vehicles sold were small cars up from 14% in 2006, while the percentages for SUV and pickups dropped 53% to 46%. ...

Zara which started with one store in La Coruna aport town in a remote part of northern Spain is the second largest retail clothing chain after Gap Stores now has3691 stores in 68 countries, adding 560 stores in the last 12 months and entering new markets in places like Croatia, Columbia, Guatemala, and Oman. Its best known for fast fashion and updating fashion frequently with new fashion clothing coming in twice a week. Lower volumes mean they sell out fast and don't require writedowns and fashions that fly can be resupplied quickly because Zara does most of its manufacturing (two thirds) in Spain or in countries nearby like Portugal, Morocco and Turkey. The closeness of manufacture and the logistics are set up such that the orders can be made quickly with sales monitored constantly on computers at La Coruna HQ and at stores locations and the manufacture and shipping can be done speedily. Not requiring writedowns and selling lower cost fashion at higher prices especially outside Spain where prices are higher (40% higher in New York for instance) and having an efficient system with costs weeded out and focus on building the brand and pleasing customers to command good profit margins enables Zara to continue manufacturing in Spain where costs are not what they would be in China or Vietnam. As other stores are learning from Zara and doing this in their stores Zara is working on refocussing its formula and fine tuning it to stay ahead of competitors. For example its making sure costs do not rise faster than sales, for first half 2007 costs went up 16% and sales went up 19%. Staff is being scheduled using new software based on sales volume at differen times, so that more salespeople work at peak times such as lunchtime or early evening, which enable Zara to cut 2% of hours worked. Alarm tags are attached at the factory, and the newest collections get labelled NEWC and are rushed to the floor on plastic hangars and only later switched to wooden hangers, and store managers now use handheld computers to sho garments ranking by sales so reordering can be done quickly in less than an hour....

Problems of declining production at the Cantarell oil field in Mexico have been known for some time. Now President Calderon is trying to take on this issue. Brazil's Petrobras reached an impasse also some years back but was able to make the reforms, see the link to Petrobras. See the link in the WSJ for 8/30/07 on Petrobras . In 1995 President Cardozo of Brazil pushed through reforms after a oil workers strike at Petrobras. Upto that time Petrobras had problems similar to Pemex with underinvestment, state meddling in its affairs and finances, and too much bureaucracy and inefficiency. Can Calderon get reform for Pemex. Which amount of Pemex revenues should go to the government, how much should Pemex have so that it can adequately fund investment in new oil field exploration offshore, how to overcome bureaucracy and inefficient management, and how to arrange board representation so that Pemex can transform itself like Petrobras did. Some of the answers to these questions are emerging. Calderon wants to prepare his political position as the reform of Pemex is something that previous Presidents have failed to tackle. To do this the Senate's Energy Committee is holding a private debate on the issues. Calderon may try to forge a consensus with the Institutional Nacional Party, as he did with pension reforms if an all party consensus eludes him. Already in reforms of public finances that Calderon has pushed through Pemex will pay 71.5 centavos on every peso of oil extracted by 2012, instead of 79 centavos as royalty payments to the government. One reform being considered is to givePemex control of its own budget. At this time $10 billion a year goes back to the government on top of the royalty tax payments. Another reform would open up refining, transport and distribution to private enterprise. A think tank expert at CIDAC in Mexico City thinks that this can be done without reforming the constitution as was done to allow private investment in electricity generation in the 1990's. The same methods could be used to promote risk sharing contracts with other companies to bring in new technology for oil exploration, including companies from emerging countries like Petrobras, Petrochina and others, given Mexican's bias against the western oil majors. Especially because Petrobras has proven expertise in deep water drilling offshore. There is no question that Mexico is falling behind. One energy expert at the National Autonomous University estimates that the density of drilling rigs in the American portion of the Gulf of Mexico is 20 times greater than in the Mexican part, with Mexico having drilled only 20 exploratory wells in water deeper than 980 feet. in other areas like refining Pemex has not built a new refinery in 20 years, and imports 40% of its gasoline from US refineries, and its 7500 gasoline stations need expansion as Mexico's economy expands. Cardozo's transformation came with setting up an independent Board of Directors and putting an investment banker in charge. International oil companies were allowed into Brazil as a way to get Petrobras to compete with western oil companies and increase efficiency. And Cardozo got Petrobras listed on the New York Stock Exchange selling some 16% of Petrobras in the capital markets. This listing ensured transparency and improved corporate governance, as about 50 analysts now tracked Petrobras. ...

"Feierabend" is the German word for when you stop working for the rest of the day. It is also the period after stopping work and beginning a period of leisure and rest. Germans working from home for government, in software industry and in other business places, are using this time when work stops at say 4 or 5 pm to shift to exercize. Here Nils Backhaus, of Germany's Federal Institute for Health, marks the end of a day's work by taking his racing bike and cruising along the the tranquil landscapes of the Ruhr river, just outside Dortmund. Stress and recovery go hand in hand, it is the bodily rhythm for Nils Backhaus and many Germans. You cannot do double time the next day. You have to first regenerate and get renewed after a day's work. This improves both health and the productiveness of work. It also creates enthusiasm the next day to begin work. A clean disconnection is needed says this report and "Feierabend" helps one do it. Workers working from home can end up working too much with no demarcation that ends the day. During the coronavirus with many workers working from home this demarcation has been lost for many people resulting in overwork and fatigue of body and mind. Microsoft 365 team has seen this surge to the point where managers have the software do this demarcation to stop work, and ask people using the software to say how they feel. What better way than something like Feierabend where one makes a clean break from work and goes out and does something completely different. It gives the mind and body a chance to rest and to regenerate. Prof. Rothauge of the Catholic University of Eichstatt who has studied the history of the evolution of work says this comes from an historical context. The industrial revolution introduced new work habits and days structured around work routines. This also provided a period of breaking away from work to rest. It was important to see the rest period as a way to regenerate not simply engage in some other equally taxing work. It was all part of the same coin, resting and renewal of mind and spirit after a day's work ended enabled one to make a fresh start the next day. It was what made productive work possible and an integral part of it.  During the coronavirus it is very important to do this regeneration and renewal, and to start this by having a clear disconnection from work after several hours of intensive work or a day of normal pace work. Intensive work of 3-4 hours or 4-5 hours can make up a days work at home because of the uninterrupted nature of working remotely from home, say workers with extensive experience of working from home. At that point break away and make the clean break or disconnection to regenerate and renew for the next day. ...

This NYT report says US president Biden is different from past presidents in two ways. He is pushing for infrastructure spending on a big scale from the very beginning of his administration. He is also not interested in shrinking his plans for multi-trillion dollar infrastructure spending to win support from Republicans. A big reason is that he sees the opportunity to go ahead because the perceptions of the American people have changed in the last five years, and have changed even more in the last year with the pandemic. Health, education,  infrastructure, and competitive technology leadership resource development spending with government playing a leading role is seen as indispensable for the US as a nation if it is to play the leading role that it has played over much of the last 100 years. The new South Korean government proposes a resumption of military dialogue with North Korea in an effort to bring down tensions in the region. A military hotline existed between North Korea and South Korea till early in 2016. North Korea cut off the hotline after relations with the South Korean government of President Park Geun-hye deteriorated following a missile test in January 2016 by North Korea. By May 2016 the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un proposed military dialogue and talks, an offer rejected by the Park government. With the impeachment of president Park the newly elected government of president Moon proposed improving relations. The recent series of North Korea missile tests was a setback for that effort. With China the new U.S.missile defense system called THADD that was installed in 2016 for South Korea was seen as a setback for China-South Korea relations. As a result the tensions are high in the region. The rhetoric and tone deteriorated after the Trump administration took office in the U.S. in early 2017. After the last missile test the South Korean government of president Moon is now reaching out to the North especially for restoring the hotline that connects the two governments in the event of a crisis, so that a disaster can be avoided on both sides. ...

Starmer of the UK's plan for Ukraine is clearly a stop gap plan in the chaotic manner in which DJT plan for disbanding NATO was conducted. This gives time for the Europeans to act. Meanwhile Leyen's EU -Leyen was Defense Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany- put out a $158 billion plan for funding defense. Merz of the CDU is clear how his coalition with SPD will act for independence from America on Europe's defense. Within weeks or months one can expect the Federal Republic take the lead for the defense of Europe, with the partnership of France, and the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and the UK. As Merz said clearly- “My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA." European perceptions of recent happenings in the Ukraine war and the war's progression from the beginnings over three years will matter in 2025 as Europe, as Germany, France and Britain take on the role of bringing a fair peace to Europe that closes the war and does the reconstituting of defense architecture of Europe under new institutions that needed to be taken up in the 1990's after the fall of the Berlin Wall. ...

Jimmy Carter comes back to us from a different era. He was born in a tiny town of Plains, Georgia, in 1924 and grew up on a family farm in a home that lacked plumbing, electricity, as a boy.  Jimmy Carter attended college for 2 years in Georgia, then enrolled at the US Naval Academy graduating in 1946. It shows the changes happening in the US with Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman in the efforts to industrialize America, bringing electricity and new opportunity for college education to rural areas in 1932-1952 which continued with highway systems under Eisenhower 1952-1960.  Carter also led the unwinding of the Democratic party with roots in the Roosevelts-Wilson era since 1902, going back to Teddy Roosevelt who as a Republican pushed hard for integrity, pro worker and antimonopoly policies in the administration. A process that went on with another Southerner, this time from Arkansas that led China's entry into the WTO and world trade without any safeguards for American workers 1992-2000. Policies that went unchanged under another Democrat Obama in 2008-2016. Instead of staying in the Navy he joined his family's peanut farm business in 1953, followed by running for governor of Georgia and grasping the opportunity to run for president as an evangelical from the South to bring moral integrity to the White House.   ...

Sanger and Broad report on the move by the Trump administration to go ahead with the overhaul of the U.S. nuclear deterrent,  with programs that were started in the Obama administration. With the more aggressive posture of Russia in Europe, the Trump administration is left with little scope for further advances in nuclear arms negotiations. A new technology based cruise missile system is now being built for $25 billion with contracts given to Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. Experts at Harvard's Belfer Center say that with the North Korean nuclear threat these programs to modernize the nuclear deterrent are getting the go ahead with little resistance. Another program modernizing the land based deterrent and replacing the Minuteman missile system is also expected to push forward at a cost of $100 billion. The Pentagon under Obama had pushed for these systems, yet there was discussion about ways to limit these programs in the hope that nuclear arms control talks could take place. The North Korean missile tests and Russia's posture have changed the discussion. By the end of the Obama's second term, a president who came into office in 2008 with hopes of nuclear weapons reduction had already lost much of the momentum he had in 2008. The situation changed with Russian intervention in Ukraine in 2015, and the North Korean long range missile test in 2017, to where the modernization of the nuclear deterrent was quietly accepted, without alternatives through negotiations. ...

By offering the prospect of higher returns in a low return environment venture capital firms are raising new funds at the highest rate in 15 years in 2016. Venture Capital firms have raised about $13 billion in the first quarter of 2016 from pension funds, endowment funds, and other sources, with about 50% of the funds going to about 7% of the total number of firms, according to Venture Source- including $2 billion to Accel Partners, other firms are Andreeson, Founders Fund, Kleiner Perkins. The returns for ten years from venture capital are about 11% compared to 6.8% for S&P 500 index, according to Cambridge Associates. Usually the fund capital raising lags behind market downturns. Much of the returns for some of the startups are not reflected in cash inflows with returns being large on paper, and startup financing has increased for firms, resulting in capital shortages and more fund raising in the industry.

Mistakes French bank Societe Generale made with acquiring a controlling stake in Greek bank Geniki. Credit Agricole bank had a similiar experience with its stake in Greek bank Emporiki. In 2010 Societe Generale was forced to set aside 400 million euros for bad loans. Credit Agricole had to remove the CEO and higher executives in 2009 before introducing good loan criteria at Emporiki. Today Emporiki has loan loss provisions of 12.5% of gross loans, and Geniki has 21%, according to analysts. Dirk Hoffmann-Becking, analyst at Bernstein Research, estimates that a default that took out 30% from the value of these Greek banks loan book and 70% from Greek government bonds would result in a loss of 3 quarters of earnings for Credit Agricole and for Societe Generale 1.5 quarters of earnings. This would mean that the French banks would take 3 quarters longer to get their capital reserve ratios to 9% for new Basel III regulations.

The new price of the Leaf is $35,200 for the 2012 model year as more features were made standard by Nissan. The Leaf will now cost $27,700 after a $7,500 federal tax credit in the U.S. The higher price also reflects the stronger yen as the Leaf is made in Japan. Every Leaf is sold from a waiting list, with sales in only some states- including Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Nissan's marketing chief, Brian Carolin, says about 1000 vehicles a month will be sold for the remainder of 2011. The average customer of the Leaf drives the car with an all electric range of 75 miles, for 30 miles each day and charges it for 3 hours a day. Average household income is $140,000. The 2012 standard model comes with a cold weather package, heated seats, battery warmer and steering wheel, and a fast charging arrangement that gets it recharged in 30 minutes, instead of the 8 hours.

Tax cuts initiated by the Bush administration and to a smaller degree by the Obama administration account for $6.3 trillon of the $10 trillion deficit in 2011. This is about half the $12.7 trillion gap between the $2.3 trillion surplus predicted by the CBO a decade ago for the year 2011 and the current deficit of $10.4 trillon. Two wars and higher defense spending add another $2 trillion. The Stimulus added $700 billon. The Prescription Drug Benefit for seniors $272 billion. This is based on new analysis of CBO data by the Pew Fiscal Analysis Initiative. The record shows unrestrained spending by both parties has led to the current mess. Pete Domenici who chaired the Senate Budget Committee at the time of the first tax cuts in 2001 says "in the end the floodgates were opened." This also shows how quickly the situation can change if sound fiscal practices are abandoned. Two wars were financed entirely with borrowed money for the first time in U.S. history.

Among the things that make the U.S. different from Britain, that Roberts does not mention, is the character of the U.S. as a nation of immigrants. As true today as it was for millions who came to these shores from Ellis Island at the turn of the century. This makes for a much more adaptable society with different strains of thinking. Another point that makes the U.S. different is that it has striven to be an anticolonial power in its policies- working to ease the transition to independence of countries in the former French and British empires. The U.S. business and economic system has worked to bring development and economic progress in all parts of the world, as a partner in contrast to a colonial power. In this sense the U.S. has a very different character and a different capability for renewal than the empires of an earlier period- and new basis for belief in itself renewable from period to period.

German chancellor, Angela Merkel's advisor, Uwe Corsepius, briefed European Union ambassadors on the draft document for EU economic integration, prepared by the German ministry. This document identifies six priorities: abolition of wage indexation systems, agreement on mutual recognition of education qualifications, creation of a common base for assessing corporate tax, adjustment of the pension systems, establishment of a national crisis management regime for banks and new legal measures to force countries to commit to tough fiscal policies through a "debt alert mechanism." Under the plan countries will be assessed agaist economic indicators and tracked by the European Commission. Other steps Merkel is proposing are coordinating retirement ages across countries. Socrates does not commit to taking out the adjustment of wages for inflation in that interview. P&G's plans for additional 4000 job cuts after the 1600 already planned for the 2012 fiscal year. This move and other actions including changes to its advertising budget are expected to generate cost savings of $10 billion by 2016. The nonmanufacturing workforce will be reduced by 10% by 2013 for annual savings of $800 millon by fiscal year 2014. $1 billion in savings comes from moving to digital and other forms of advertising. $6 billion in savings would be generated from less costly packaging materials and supply chain efficiency improvements. By using concentrated forms of detergent products less packaging will be needed. Anaysts say P&G's cost structure compares poorly with competitors- with 31.5% of revenue going to selling, general and administrative expenses, compared to 28.1% for household product companies. At the same time as these cuts are made, P&G plans to add 20 new plants in Brazil, China, S. Africa and Poland.

Women executives at a panel discussion sponsored by Columbia Universiy in New York, in Dec. 2014, provide ideas for getting more women in Tech fields. Ideas include, mentoring, with early education exposure to technology careers- as early as middle school. One executive says she takes in 150 female high school students to Washington D.C. for leadership training. Other ideas are to turn maternity leave into a positive feature of women's lives by letting women who do well keep their duties by delegating them to others while they are away, and making a smooth pathway back to work full time. The suggestion is to allow a gradual transition to ramp back up to full time work, and allow flexible hours, working from home. In daily work women are encouraged to look for partnerships with other areas of the organization for getting results, and being sensitive to which areas of the organization they need to build support in.
