The Buick Regal is turning out to be just the car for going after younger buyers, and going after Gen Y buyers, buyers who have appeared so elusive for GM. It handles like European cars in its ride, and this reviewer compares it to a Peugeot. It was almost an accident in the way it was developed. It started as the development of a global, midsize front-drive platform at GM's Opel division in Russelsheim, Germany in 2004. At the time it was to be the next generation Saturn Aura for the US, but with Saturn closed down, it was renamed Buick. In Germany its called Opel Insignia. In China where Buick sales are growing rapidly, this car is called a Buick. This car is getting great reviews and is a part of the new rebirth of GM.

U.S. Congressional investigation shows the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) missed two opportunities, one in 2007 and another in 2010, to launch formal probes into whether the 2003-2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and the Saturn Ion had a defect leading to non deployment of airbags. In 2007 the head of the NHTSA's defect assessments division emailed other officials in the Office of Defects Investigation recommending an investigation be launched. Yet no action was taken.

How the similiar cars can have different effects the Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn Sky. The Pontiac sports car sold well for 12-18 months and is now losing sales and has to be sold with incentives whereas the Saturn Sky is in big demand and is helping the whole Saturn lineup by boosting its image- Saturn sales are up 15% this year whereas Pontiac sales are down 17% this year, and GM has 5 months of Solstice inventory compared to 1 month of Sky inventory. Ofcourse GM also spends moreon marketing Saturn but its also because of years of neglect of the Pontiac brand. When was Solstice introduced and when was the Sky, what are the chances that after 12-18 months the Sky will also cool off if the Sky cam in much later. But in creating buzz for the brand the Saturn Sky has definitely worked. Ofcourse the Saturn brand has other things going for it to have increased sales.

Chrysler's sales are dropping the fastest of all the car companies . April 2009 sales dropped 24% from March 2009. Ford sales are doing better than Toyota, as they declined in April over same month prior year by 32%, compared to 42% for Toyota. It appears that the Buy American factor may be helping Ford Motor more than the other American car companies, and that Chrysler also suffers from the lack of new models with new technology and investment in new features. At GM the situation is better at Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC, where sales in April 2009 declined by 29%, over same month prior year, which compares with a 55% decline in sales, of Pontiac, Hummer, Saab, and Saturn brands which are likely to be dropped. When a Saturn crossover with one name Outlook, and the same crossover with another name Traverse sells at a Chevy dealership does it take sales away from another GM brand. What happens wen marketing budgets and campaigns focus on a car like the Chevy Malibu does it take something away from the Saturn Aura which isn't the focus of marketing efforts and doen't have the financing package of the Chevy Malibu which is part of the marketing focus on the Malibu. The new Pontiac G8 doesn't get much marketing as GM focusses on the Malibu. So the question is whether it helps Toyota to have the Camry one car which benefits from a focussed marketing effort as opposed to the distributed and diffused markeing effort on a coupple of nameplates and brands.

How GM 3 crossover vehcles built at the same plant in lansing, Michigan running at full capacity, are taking sales away from the Toyota and Honda brands. About 20% of all Acadia and Outlooks go to customers trading in Asian cars, about 14% of all Enclaves go to customers trading in Asian cars. In general only 3% of GM vehicle sales go to customers trading in vehicles made by Toyota and Honda. Figures from JD Powers. GM just added a third shift at Lansing and the inventory numbers also reflect hot selling crossovers- only a 22 day supply of Enclaves, 32 day supply of Acadias and a 51 day supply of Outlooks. In general GM is carrying 70 days inventory of vehicles. With smaller stocks less need for incentives so Enclaves and Acadias go at full price. Note: Why is there this juxtaposition of figures amuch higher inventory of Saturn Outlooks at 51 days compared to 22 days for Buick Enclave, and yet more people are trading in their Japanese or Asian cars for Outlooks than they are for Enclaves, 20% for Outlooks vs 14% for Enclaves? Here a Mercedes customer went for an Enclave at $45,000, $30,000 less than a comparable Mercedes. ...

Consideration is a term being used in Detroit auto company marketing efforts, if a customer gives little consideration to a company or brand or if its not on his list of brands or companies to consider, then snap you are not even in the running. The customer does not even visit your dealer showrooms, and no matter how well you make your cars its not going to make a difference. It has to take a lot of neglect of customers for this sort of situation to arise, but its exactly the situation Detroits auto companies face. They are trying marketing ploys such as this one by Ford's advertising agency, but its impact is uncertain. The efforts at GM also focus on marketing but again efforts to put Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys in Saturn dealerships next to the Saturn Aura, for side by side test drives have not had much impact on Aura sales. So a similiar effort for the Chevrolet Malibu in Chevy dealerships has been scrapped. There is even skepticism that a lifetime warranty on engines and transmissions by Chrysler on its vehicles will have much impact, so large is the customer resistance and ingrained perception of American car manufacturers. Over time perceptions may change but it will take a while to convince the American customer who feels he was once treated with disdain, and who will give a good hard look at things before he changes his mind. The figures bear this out. Years of neglect of car buying public and focus on SUV's and trucks is showing up in a 51.3 % share of the market for the American Three companies down from 60% 4 years ago. So half the market has pretty much been conceded to the likes of Honda and Toyota. Actually in the West and East coasts the numbers probably range to 60% and 70% depending on the local area in these 2 regions. So that means more established dealerships for cars, years of marketing effort focussed on cars, sales contacts and so that may take years to dislodge to any degree. The figures behind consideration by JD Powers show that 54% of car buyers are import loyalists, a slightly higher figure than the 51.3% showing that the trend is even more defection to imports in the 1-3 years ahead. And 22% consider both domestic and import cars. With this segment there is more selection in the imports beause only now are the American Three carmakers building up their car model lineups, especially Ford, so this will be ahard fought segment with no certainty that the Detroit Three carmakers will come out on top given the lead and established networks of the carmakers like Toyota and Honda. Only 25% are domestic or American carmaker loyal. A lot may depend on the way a customer is treated from reading letters to the editor in the media by buyers of US and import cars. A car buyer treated with no respect and sincere concern for his needs and preferneces is likely to remember the treatment for a long time. Not just products but attitudes and people in sincerity will have to change....

WSJ says that administration officials are considering aplan whereby on the first day of bankruptcy the government would announce the setting up of a "new GM" with Chevrolet, Cadillac, and good assets as part of it and a separate "old GM" that would hold the bad assets, retiree and health care obligations, Hummer and Saturn. The "good" GM would have responsibility for $20 billion in government loans. THe old GM could stay in bankruptcy for longer till buyers are found for parts of it or as it is wound down, with proceeds from the sales of assets going to creditors claims. WSJ sources familiar with the developments and the administration's views say that the administration prefers this route, and GM will likely will be forced into filing for bankruptcy protection in mid-May. That would be 45 days into the 60 day period President Obama has given GM to come up with a new plan that will work. The submitted plan was rejected by Obama's team on grounds that the assumptions for sales were too optimistic, none of the concessions from bondholders and the UAW that were needed had been made, the Chevy Volt was not going to pe price competitive, and fuel efficient car production was not a critical part of the plan. The government has asked Fiat to scale back its planned ownership of Chrysler to 20%, as part of an agreement for more government loans....

A technology that has been known for years but with problems to solve before it can go on the road is being developed by automakers. It will increase fel economy by about 15% and reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen a key smog component. GM is working on getting HCCI which stands for Homogenous-charge Compression- Ignition to work in a gasoline engine. For it to work the combustion process in such an engine has to meet certain conditions, the mixture of air an fuel has to be homogenous and be at certain temperatures. Once this is achieved combustion occurs without a spark. The trick is to get the temperature and gas mixture to just the right homogenous levels so that it sparks and burns efficiently, which at this time is being achieved by computer controls keeping the engine rpm within a certain optimal range of 1000-3000 rpm which covers typical driving. Problems that remain to be tackled are the faint rattling type noise when the engine shifts to spark ignition when its outside this range of rpm, and the emissions reduction at low loads, and handling a range of fuels. GM has made progress upto the advanced engineering and road test phase for the Saturn Aura. German automakers Mercedes and VW are perfecting there own versions of HCCI and Honda is developing its version and its a top priority for these automakers. ...

June unemployment numbers will jump say experts at IHS Insight as GM and Chrysler downsize even more to become smaller companies with even less market share. This will reflect closing Pontiac and sale or closing of the other GM brands Saturn, Saab, and Hummer. It will reflect closing of more dealerships of GM and Chrysler. THis might be offset by a pickup in sales if something like the European trading clunkers for new cars program takes off in the USA. But with the US customers more in debt and with rising job losses, the pattern may be different in the US. It may only offer a small boost in sales. Manufacturing still matters in a recovery. In 1980 manufacturing was 20% of America's output, now it is 11.5% says Mark Zandl of Moody's Economy.com. Manufacturing, he says, has a bigger impact than its size suggests, because it responds quickly. As sales resume workers are called back to their jobs. The sharp V shaped recoveries in the early 80's reflected the rapid response of manufacturing. After the 1980's both the declines and the recoveries were shallow in 1990-1991 and 2001. Now with GM and Chrysler shrinking further under the government plan to fix these companies, and taking the supplier impact, the rebound leg of the V is missing. The kick from the Big Three and their suppliers is missing, says Nigel Gault of IHS Insight. Of the 5.7 million jobs lost from Jan 2008 to June 2009, 1.6 million were in manufacturing and 289,000 were in motor vehicles, split almost evenly between assemblers and supplier networks....

This is important piece becasue it identifies what Mullally sees as the biggest opportunity with Ford- he identifies it as" the single biggest opportunity." Surely because Ford really has never really tapped on all that this means- does it make any difference in a global market whether some part or feature is invented or developed in Brazil, India, England or the USA? Basic parts of an automobile remain the same. All markets want the latest technology and features, it is a global market and you better operate as one to get maximum impact of an engineer in India, Brazil, Russia, UK, Germany or the USA, they all develop the best parts, and the best technology of an automobile and it is marketed in many countries. Example Opel Astra under the Saturn name in the USA, what about the Mondeo for goodness sake in the US not just in Europe, and why a better Focus for the European market and not the same Focus for the US market in quality and technology?

The funny German ad for the Jazz is playful and funny. Its a redesigned Honda Fit minicar sold in Europe as the Jazz. Acura's TSX is essentially a European Honda Accord. Saturn is offering a version of the European Opel Astra compact. Ford is bringing the Fiesta here from Europe as the new Verve compact car and it unveiled a prototype of a New York City taxi built on a van Ford sells in Europe. VW is planning to bring more European cars here and build a factory in the US. And Mercedes is brining models here equiped with its new Blue Tec diesel engines. And Daimler is bringing its tiny Sart Fortwo car to the US with a website that has taken 30,000 orders already. The market is going global for cost reasons. And its a market looking more and more like the European market where the local carmakers and the foreign carmakers are all jostling for a share of the pie with a fractured market and each car maker having a small share of the market. Ford, GM and Chrysler compete with Toyota, Honda, Renault-Nissan, VW, BMW and Mercedes all with a small share of the overall market and all these companies now operating as global companies with operations all over the world and building models now for a worldwide market. Ford is clearly following this trend and Mullaly wants to see good European modelsbrought quickly into the US and costs for developing models shared across a worldwide market. Smaller size also works to bring European and Asian models adapted to the US because the US market is moving towards fuel efficient smaller cars. So there is a convergence from a number of angles, for it to make sense to build a good car and sell it in as many places as possible, and the old region based logic does not make sense any more....

Shows how buyers can compare vehicles for front side and rear. Rear is quite important and not all brands do well example Toyotas RAV4, Higlander and other suv's fared marginal or poor, so also saturn VUE, Honda Pilot, CRV, Subaru Tribeca, Ford Taurus X, and Hyundai Santa Fe had G or Good rating for rear hits. Hyundai Tucson was marginal and so was Ford Explorer so only Honda and Subaru and Volvo show consistently high ratings in rear and Toyota shows consistently poor or marginal. Has Toyota lost ground in safety and is Ford catching up, and is Honda's focus on safety showing up in results, are questions answered by a look at these ratings.

Here DW.com talks to a British astronomer who studied at University College, London and Imperial College. Giles Sparrow is the author of "The History of the Universe in 21 Stars." Giles Sparrow tells us there are 200 billion stars, think of that for a moment!  Sparrow says 61 Cygni is an obscure star in the constellation of a swan. Astronomers with today's telescopes, itself something recent, have figured out the distance. Why are stars not shifting their positions as the earth moves around the sun? The reason is that stars are so far away we can only imagine these distances, or maybe not even able to imagine. ...
