Montreal Olympics took a long time to pay off- developed countries have problems too. Athens is an example of a country that suffered badly just following the Olympics, with poor management of public finances, and Greece is a mid tier European economy. It is not about discriminating against developing countries, because developing countries can if they look to show off match their public transportation systems with brand new subways and bullet trains to match those in China, which would get approval from the broad public. For example it would make no sense for India to build $12 billion of Olympic stadiums and related infrastructure, when it could first match China's transportation infrastructure, road building and subway/bullet train building, as well as invest in athletic facilities for every high school in the country. The politicians are sure to be reelected that way, the country get pride in its transportation system, and instead of 4 medals in all India could match Britain and the U.S. in having invested in the same way in sports programs in its high schools and colleges. What is better than that?

NYT report points to the lack of checking on Lochte's account when NBC broadcast the story. The incident and Lochte's story which did not stand up to scrutiny damaged Brazilians perception of the U.S. It showed Brazilians think that Americans are ready to believe the worst about South American countries. Already facing problems with crime and making an effort to combat it, and in the midst of political uncertainty with lack of public approval for the Olympics, this was a failure on the part of some media channels to take this into account in making sure that what was broadcast was correct down to specific details. One newspaper compared the Lochte story to the way the media handled the Trump story, giving the hype and profanity full coverage for its sensational value at a time when news television media is struggling.

Dangers to the global economy from many left behind by the tech and trade changes of the last 2 decades that have benefitted some sectors and groups and hurt others. Turning to populist political appeals those who feel left behind and suffer the effects of a lack of intergenerational mobility could lead the world into a period of protectionism and nationalist upheaval. This would reverse many of the changes that delivered prosperity for the four decades after World War II.

The appeal of populist politicians using racist slogans and divisive rhetoric to appeal to those left behind by the capitalism, tech changes, trade and globalization of the last 2 decades, has created a new danger to the prosperity and peace achieved in the 4 decades after World War II. The Republican platform for 2016 is very different than the 2012 platform. The word deficit when it occurs is for trade deficit not fiscal deficit. Under both parties tougher regulation for banks with memories of the 2008 crisis and how it hurt ordinary Americans, The same for trade and the way it has hurt Americans in manufacturing- new trade negotiations will be tougher, companies in the domestic market will have better terms and exporters will face tougher environment overseas.

Emilio Lozoya is replaced as CEO in May 2016 by a close associate of finance minister Videgaray, Gonzalez Anaya, who is expected to come up with $5.8 billion in spending cuts. Inefficiency and wasteful spending was not checked early enough at Pemex folowing the collapse in oil prices- leading to a liquidity crisis. A report in the WSJ cites a Pemex official who says Pemex was down to $8 million in cash at one point in Jan. 2016. The Mexican government reduces taxes for Pemex and pays suppliers during the liquidity crisis. Anaya cites one example of wasteful spending, an order to buy computers that was cancelled saving $171 million. Anaya says the computers should have been leased. that was cancelled resulting in savings of $171 million, which he says should be leased.

Eduardo Porter of the NYT reflects on what happened in Brazil in chaos after soaring popularity of Lula as long as the commodities boom lasted, with no real foundations. The extremes of populist policies and of free markets without mindfulness of the risks can be dangerous to the livelihoods of the vast majority of people in the Americas. As Brazil struggles, Mexico with the opposite model struggles from lack of good management, Argentina emerges from decades of experimenting with extremes in either direction, and the U.S. mulls over its future direction in the general election of 2016, there is a moral for the Americas extremes without mindfulness are dangerous. Cruz and Sanders offer different versions of direction. Cruz and Sanders a version of policies too far in one direction, Trump channeling anger but lacking any clear statement of policy. The fate of nations and peoples hangs in the balance- needed is mindfulness and thoughtfulness in taking the path forward, clear of illusions that it will be easy going forward from mistakes in the past.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
