Germany had 1.1 million job vacancies in the 2nd quarter of 2015, according to the Institute of Employment Research, and the situation is likely to lead to more vacancies with the aging population as more workers retire. German companies are actively working with the government to train new workers.

Over 50% think it will lead to more terrorist incidents. About the same number see the policy favorably in the Green Party as see it unfavorably in the AfD party, the parties on either side of the political spectrum. Overall says DW.com it appears to be balanced for negative and positive sentiment.

40,000 migrants were expected in the weekend of September 12-13 alone in Germany. Germany was getting close to its limits in handling the rapid influx of migrants from the Austrian border. On Sept. 13 Germany reintroduced border controls which were lifted for Syrian refugees on Sept. 3 as a humanitarian gesture. The border controls were also a message to Europe, said Germany's Interior Minister, Mr. Maiziere, that the Schengen Agreement allowing passport free travel in the 26 EU countries itself was at stake.

The German effort to help refugees find a home in the country is in sharp contrast to the little that is done by the U.S. and other countries in Europe.

From the small town of Erfurt, Germany, Katrin Bennhold provides this exceptional report in the NYT of how one city in the heart of Germany with a medieval past is coping with the influx of refugees. Under Germany's quota system, Thuringia gets 2.5% of new refugees and Erfurt 20% of that. How well the experiment works depends on how it is working at the local level.

Goll is a German who lived through Weimar, the Nazis, and the Cold War. He is a prolific diarist, and records each day what he sees in the Germany of his time. He describes the human condition in his description in 1921 of a couple moving a push cart through the snow. Of man stumbling in his way from mistake to mistake and groping desperately for a good path.

The quota system takes into account population and economic resources, economic strength, in assigning numbers of refugees. It makes it possible to tackle a bigger problem by breaking it up into a large number of smaller problems based on resources available to tackle them. It has worked so far. Most Syrian refugees say they are glad to be in Germany and would be willing to move to whichever city they were assigned to.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
