Why some German universities will educate refugees for free - The Washington Post

The effort by 90 German universities to provide education for free to the large number of refugees from North Africa and the Middle East that are being given a home in Germany in 2015-2016. In rural areas especially in former East Germany there is still uneasiness about the large number of refugees expected to come in 2015- but students and most people in urban areas are receptive. Yet the challenges remain as the university system is crowded with students and can accomodate only about a fourth of the refugges coming in 2015. The low unemployment rate and need for workers is helpful in absorbing such a large influx of people into the country. Volunteers and the German language classes will help better integrate the refugees into German society. Though there is a small minority of people opposed to immigration, Germany society remains largely open to taking in and helping the refugees, compared to the situation in Sweden and Denmark where recent elections showed parties with anti-immigration stance getting a larger share of the vote and becoming part of the government.

A wave of migrants made their way on a dangerous boat journey to Europe in 2014-2016. The refugee crisis in the war zones of Libya, Iraq, Syria and Yemen, with added migrants from Africa for people seeking a better life, is leading to one of the largest movements of migrants since 1945. It also poses problems of uncontrolled immigration in Europe, where immigration is one of the top issues in elections and in public debate-in Sweden, Britain, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy. By 2017 the migration slowed after action by the European Union countries to control it from countries in Africa.

In the tenth year of the Merkel administration questions are raised about whether her position on immigration is out of touch with ordinary Germans. Her New Years Eve message included a reference to the Dresden marches on immigration saying that these people had "prejudice, coldness, and even hatred in their hearts." Immigration and paying the cost of integrating immigrants was one of the issues in 2014 Swedish elections, and is an issue today in the UK and France. The terrorist attack in France by radical Muslims has created new tensions in 2015.

The German chancellor will be remembered in history for the way she handled the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015, and for the courage to say, "if Europe fails on the question of refugees, its close connection with universal civil rights will be destroyed." Reports in the Guardian newspaper say Germany is likely to accept about 1 million refugees in 2015. Chancellor Merkel says about 800,000 refugees will be admitted in 2015. Contrast this with the UK reports the Guardian which has 166 refugees admitted to the UK, and reports in the WSJ that about 1500 refugees have been admitted to the U.S.. Merkel has taken on the challenge in a spirited way as Europe faces anti-immigrant sentiment and rallied German society in a way that is remarkable. The withdrawal of the Obama administration from the Middle East led to the collapse of the fragile situation in Libya, Iraq and Syria, and the unravelling of these countries, leading to the current refugee crisis with about half of the Syrian population dislocated and large parts of the population of Libya, Iraq, and Kurdish regions dislocated.
