Apple Services Shut Down in China in Startling About-Face

China is implementing president Xi Jinping's policy to reduce foreign influence in China's internet, and promote local tech suppliers. Restrictive policies went into effect for IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, Qualcomm, to reduce their influence in China's core tech industries. Apple remained an exception till April 2016 when Apple was asked to shut down Apple iBooks and iTunes services in China. China sees this as an effort to promote in Jinping's words local "high quality content with positive voices for a healthy, positive culture that is a force for good.," according to Xinhua news service. It also increases the role of Huawei, Alibaba, and Tencent in the internet in China.

In an effort to implement president Xi Jinping's policy of reducing the influence of western companies such as IBM, Cisco, Microsoft, Qualcomm in China's core industries, more restrictive policies and efforts to get the companies to share technology were introduced in 2015. Apple was relatively an exception. In April 2016 China's ministry responsible for internet and culture shut down Apple services for books and music. Apart from favoring local companies Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent, this reduces foreign culture's influence in China, a policy favored by the government to maintain what it sees as "positive influence," by local providers.

How much of the iPhone is manufactured in China? 3.6% by China's Hon Hai, but this does not account for South Korean and Japanese suppliers using manufacturing bases in China. German suppliers also have Chinese factories. Production costs at Hon Hai itself are rock bottom, as a result the other parts would be too expensive if not manufactured in China. Reliable statistics would include the value of all suppliers who build i-phone parts in China and take into account the impact on the US of manufacturing jobs that would otherwise be available in the US.
