China’s Haier Nears Deal to Buy GE Appliance Business
Wall Street Journal 01/15/2016
Anne Applebaum of the Washington Post describes the problem of misinformation and disinformation when internet trolls intentionally create confusion on the internet. With weaknesses in the media and the rapid spread of information on the internet the danger of this happening are real. Fareed Zakaria describes one such incident he experienced. By allowing anonymous postings Twitter makes it possible for no one to take responsibility while false information is spread. Pseudo names also are a problem as individuals have not disclosed who they are. The best approach is for individuals to take responsibility and be allowed to post on media sites only after accepting this responsibility.

No prospect of career advancement. No problem said Italians in the past. Two of three Italians, according to newspaper La Stampa in Italy, now says they are willing to take risks if this means career advancement. Italy is changing in the provate sector as prime minister Renzi removes some of the strict labor laws that made firing and hiring difficult, reducing job mobility in the country. Yet the public sector has still similiar protections from that era. This movie provides Italians quite a few laughs, with the story of a government clerk whose only aspiration in life is a 9 to 5 government job, with some bribes, and authority to rubber stamp approvals. When asked what he had contributed in the movie the clerk proudly stamps, and stamps again with his rubber stamp. Spain created over 700,000 new jobs, Italy only about 125,000 in 2015 mostly parttime, showing how far Italy has still to go. Two countries where the movie could resonate are India and Japan. India because of the rubber stamp anecdote, and Japan because of the aspiration for work that offers job security for life- like Italy and Renzi, things are changing in India and Japan with Modi and Abe, a bit slowly.

The New York Times 05/01/17
U.S. presidential candidate Ted Cruz is gaining support from establishment donors and supporters. Some donors and Republican party experts agree with Cruz's assessment of previous elections lost by the Republican party- a critical element in the loss was the failure to rally the party faithful, including its evangelical base of support. By turning out in higher numbers, and by gaining the support of independents, and the white working class which today supports Donald Trump, this view holds that the Republican party could overcome other obstacles to win in the 2016 presidential election. Cruz held his own state of Texas winning by 17 percentage points, and won in Oklahoma, Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, after winning the Iowa caucuses. By March 2016 violence prone minority hate rhetoric against minorities at Trump rallies had separated responsible voices in the Republican party from the Trump efforts to divide the party.

To understand the Obama presidency one has to understand the people worund him, including Dennis McDonough. Dana Milbank of the Washington Post describes his encounter with McDonough in Jan. 2016, with McDonough being very careful about a choice of words, and seeing him as very cautious- way more cautious than Obama, says Milbank. This may explain some of the decisions taken during the second term of the Obama presidency, including foreign policy, which contrast greatly with the decisiveness of Clinton, and even more with Truman, Democrats who preceded Obama and acted decisively in the Balkans for Clinton and Berlin, Greece, Korea for Truman.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
