Anne Applebaum describes the seriousness of the problem on internet trolls spreading information and disinformation to create confusion. Her proposal is that individuals take responsibility, and be able to post on media sites only after taking individual responsibility, no psuedonyms, no anonymity allowed considering the danger of such activity. Applebaum points to the effects shown of such comments following an article in media publications, which can influence the reader to actually doubt the content of reliable and well informed journalism.

Anonymous trolls and spread of misinformation- a proposal to remove internet anonymity

01/15/2016

Anne Applebaum of the Washington Post describes the problem of misinformation and disinformation when internet trolls intentionally create confusion on the internet. With weaknesses in the media and the rapid spread of information on the internet the danger of this happening are real. Fareed Zakaria describes one such incident he experienced. By allowing anonymous postings Twitter makes it possible for no one to take responsibility while false information is spread. Pseudo names also are a problem as individuals have not disclosed who they are. The best approach is for individuals to take responsibility and be allowed to post on media sites only after accepting this responsibility.

With today's internet based media coverage there is a danger of too much information, and too few credible sources, and misinformation that lets the average reader come to the wrong conclusion. With news organizations losing money and cutting foreign news bureaus, too much of the world's important news events are covered by free lance journalists who take risks in difficult locations and are often poorly paid.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
