The Indian economy is expected to grow by 8.5% this year compared to 6.5% in 2009. But a major problem looms in the high inflation facing India. The poor monsoon in 2009 led to higher prices for foodgrains, lentils, and sugar. And the government's cut in the fuel subsidies will lead to more efficient use of energy, but will lead to one additional percentage point in wholesale price inflation according to the Reserve Bank of India, India's central bank. The whoesale price index in India went up by 10.5% in June from the prior year, and this after a 10.1% increase in May. Bloomberg's tracking of consumer prices in the Asia-Pacific region shows India at the top of 17 countries in inflation, and consumer prices paid by industrial and farm workers in India are shown to be increasing at 14% annually. The government is coming under criticism for not releasing more grains from its stocks to soften the impact of last year's monsoon. The Manmohan Singh government finds inflation at above 10% unacceptable and is looking for further action from the central bank. Reserve Bank of India governor Subbarao has raised rates 3 times since March 2010 to 5.5%, and a further increase is expected at its next meeting on July 27. A better harvest in September, from a better monsoon season, could help lower food prices. If this does not happen, more tightening by the central bank could hurt economic growth, putting the government in a quandary....

Ford Motor Company profit increased in 2015. Ford made $1.9 billion net profit in the 2nd quarter 2015, a 44% increase over the prior year quarter. Revenue declined to $37.3 billion, as margins reach the projected 8-9% range for 2015. Full year operating profits are estimated by Ford between $8.5 and $9.5 billion. Prices on the F-150 truck were up $3600 over the prior year, reaching $44,000. Ford sold more larger vehicles and pickups than sedans. A favorable sales environment is helping sales of more profitable larger vehicles- low interest rates, low gas prices and higher fuel economy on newer F-150 vehicles, including an aluminium body on the new F-150 truck. Recent China sales also show increased demand for the larger vehicles and SUV's, with Ford China market share increasing to 4.5% for 2014. In the U.S. Ford and GM are losing market share, with a focus on profitability. In China sales are growing at a slower pace with the economic slowdown, with 2015 sales growth estimated at less than 1%. Worldwide sales for VW and GM increased to 5.04 million and 4.9 million for the first 6 months of 2015, on the basis of larger market share in China. Toyota worldwide sales declined slightly to 5.02 million. Future prospects may not be as good, as the market in China could become very competitive with too much capacity. The price competition in smaller cars could reach the larger vehicles at some point with the slowdown reducing profits from China....

Andy Grove makes this passionate plea for the dignity of workers in America in 2010. It is worth reading in 2020 what this founder of Intel Corp and pioneering spirit of Silicon Valley has to say. Andy Grove of Intel says there is something seriously wrong when the unemployment rate in the Bay Area is higher than the 9.7% national average for the USA. American companies have added jobs like crazy in Asia, but things are sputtering back home. Hon Hai has 800,000 employees and makes most of the electronic and computer products for American companies. Grove says startups are not the answer, unless they scale up and create jobs the way Intel did starting back in 1968, with a $3 million capital infusion by investors. The move from the first production model to mass production is critical, as companies hire thousands of people. Innovation and scaling up have to go together. He makes his point clearly by pointing out that Apple has 25,000 employees. For every Apple employee there are 10 employees in China working on Apple iMacs, iPods, iPhones. And he adds that the same 10 to 1 relationship applies to other U.S. tech companies. And here Grove asks the tough question by first posing an answer. He says it sounds like- no big deal, we keep the high paying jobs, we keep most of the profits, but what kind of society are we going to have with highly paid professional workers and lots of people unemployed? And he doesn't mention that there are a lot more young people unemployed. He says the US has become very inefficient at creating tech jobs, and it would be a great mistake not to act decisively early on. And adds that the investments in such areas as solar power and electric car batteries have to be made early on to maintain leadership in these areas. Grove faults academics like Alan Blinder and others who say loss of manufacturing jobs and whole industries was no big deal. The U.S. has forgotten the value of manufacturing jobs. He wants to see America focus on jobs and rebuild its industrial base. And less of transferring engineering knowhow and new technologies overseas, technology that can help bring innovation and scaling up of factories at home. In his view individual companies doing their own thing, in a misguided fashion that jobs don't matter, is not the answer to the situation we face. The industrial economies of Asia, China at the present day, have focussed on jobs and technology, and scaled up. Grove reminds readers of the situation in America in 1932, when jobless veterans demonstrating outside the White House in large numbers were dispersed by soldiers with live ammunition and fixed bayonets. This makes him shudder at the very thought of it, and brings back memories of his early years in Hungary, as a young man in 1956. Are we listening? ...

Apple reports a slowdown in iPhone sales, with a less than 1 percent in increase in sales, for fiscal first quarter ending Dec. 26, 2015, over the prior year quarter. Revenue is expected to decline by 11% for the quarter ending in March 2016, over the prior year, first such decline in 13 years. Analysts say Apple will have to reduce gross margins of about 40% to increase sales. Apple CFO Maestri says Apple increased prices in some markets because of the strong dollar. When the stronger dollar is excluded from results for the quarter ending Dec. 26, 2015, sales revenue increased by 8% over prior year quarter, according to Apple. As Apple slows down its shares financial performance is stalled at about $100. Apple tried to present a different picture now that China sales are slowing down- it said that users had "engaged" with 1 billion Apple devices whether iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV, in the last 90 days, by downloading an app, song or movie. These services geneated $5.5 billion in revenues for the quarter ending in December, a 15% increase over prior year quarter....

The U.S. market looks like it is becoming the kind of maturing market that Japan and Germany have become for automobiles. Germany and Japan saw sales peak at high levels and then decline. And they have been declining steadily for several years. The US has a growing population and demographics because of immigration compared to Japan so there wil be continued demand for new cars. However since 2000 carmakers have introduced so many price incentives, interest free loans, and other ways of pushing sales that sales have continued to climb to unsustainable levels. All through the 1990's sales were in the 15 million range, then after 2000 sales climbed, except for the short period of uncertainty after 9/11/2001 Trade Center bombings. Sales climbed up to 17 million and stayed at these higher levels till the recent crises in 2007 saw a drop in sales and a shift to smaller fuel efficient cars. GM was offering 0% financing for 5 years through its Keep America Rolling campaign in the aftermath of 9/11. By 2005 automakers were offering as much as $8000 in discounts on pickup trucks. Employee pricing enabled regular customers to buy at employee prices. The Big Three sold to rental fleets unsold cars, so much so that by 2005 25% of all vehicles made by GM and Ford went to rental fleets, to rental companies in which these companies had large ownership stakes. For GM this became part of strategy. Fixed costs were high and the UAW contracts made it difficult to layoff workers, a jobs bank in which layed off workers could remain till rehired was itself quite costly as money had to be paid to the workers in the job bank. With this kind of inflexibility in the labor market GM could only spread all the fixed costs for its aging workforce which required pension payouts to retirees and health payments to retirees, by selling more automobiles. During this period of inflexibility in labor, and the legacy costs of previous boom years since the 1950's with generous UAW contracts, GM and Ford pushed sales to unsustainable levels; without considering the furture implications of this short term strategy. Another way this could hurt is by pulling sales in future years into current years because of interest free financing or huge discounting which probably happened in 2004-2005 and is seeing a payback today in 2008. At the peak in 2005 carmakers were planning further expansion of SUV capacity or expansion of other carmaking facilities. Gas was still not at the high levels of today. In 1999 gas cost $1.15 cents a gallon, and it was a little higher than that, but nowhere near what we are seeeing today. These new plants are coming up just as the sales are dropping dramatically, the half million SUV's sold in 2008 is about half the sales in 2003, enough to fill 2 plants when many more plants are being built or opening. The new capacity of 4 plants capable of producing 1 million vehicles is looking like a big mistake, like the new Toyota Tundra plant in Texas. Some of the new carmaking capacity is a Toyota plant in Tupelo, Mississippi, a Honda plant in Indiana, and a Kia Motors plant in Georgia. All this means a big drop in factory utilization rates. GM has 2 plants making full size SUV's. Later this year GM will cut production at these plants and at 2 plants making pickup trucks to utilize them only for 1 eight hour shift a day. Toyota has 1 full plant of excess capacity, not including the plant opening in Tupelo, Missisippi, making it likely to be down in utilization very significantly as well. Nissan is only using 65% of capacity at plants in Canton, Mississippi and Smyrna , Tennessee. And these utilization rates reflect the impact at the early stage of the housing crisis, consumption spending is only now beginning to bite, and unemployment is still to take a hit, so th economic recession immpact is still not reflected in auto sales. Even now GM and Chrysler cling to the hope of a sales pickup in late 2008 and in 2009, which is looking less likely by the day. J.D. Powers survey show the North American auto making capacity at 18.7 million cars and production this year at 14.1 million. This means the automakers have disastrously misjudged the auto market, and the role their own actions in pushing sales have affected the market in inflating the sales numbers beyond what is a sustainable sale increase. When credit tightening and lower consumption spending, housing crisis, and higher unemployment all hit the US in full impact by 2009 the situation is likely to worsen significantly and could become a disaster. ...

To ensure a recovery in profits in 2010-2011, Ford's strategy was to sell the Focus and Fiesta small cars at a higher price point even if this meant lower sales. Profit margins for the North American region were above 10%, and Ford's president of the Americas, Mark Fields, says this will be maintained for 2012. In the first 3 quarters of 2011, Ford's profits were $6.6 billion. Analysts for Edmunds.com say Ford has shied away from offering large discounts, subsidizing leases and other incentives, and tried to maintain higher margins. The average price for the Focus of $20,589 being higher than average prices of rivals except for the Jetta from VW, according to Edmunds. The average price of the Fiesta is higher than rivals except for the Honda Fit, according to this information. Focus sales increased by 2% in 2011 over 2010, even as compact car sales went up by 8.7%, according to Autodata. Sales of the Fiesta actually fell by 30% in December 2011 compared to the prior year. The result of this strategy is that inventories of small cars are up significantly for Ford. By 2011 years end Ford had on dealer lots inventory of Focus cars at 92 days current sales, and Fiesta cars at 126 days. Normal inventory is considered less than 60 days supply. By comparison GM had a 68 day supply for the Cruze, and a 61 day supply for the Chevy Sonic. The challenge for Ford is to hold on to its pricing strategy, which means reducing production to work off the extra inventory....

Binyamin Applebaum cites different experts on how U.S. Fed policy could play out in 2017-2019. He cites Fed governor Dudley that there is increased uncertainty under the Trump administration, and other economists who say that aging population, lack of innovation, and steady growth under the Obama administration with falling unemployment, make it unlikely that growth will jump well above 2%. The Fed's own forecasts are for for under 2% growth in 2017 and 2018, and Applebaum says this is not expected to change by much. Janet Yellen does not see a huge stimulus as a positive, says Applebaum, because it would increase the deficit at the wrong time. He cites Yellen who prefers to see more fiscal space now that unemployment is down to 4.6%. Steady growth in the view of Fed officials has taken up much of the backlog of people looking for work since the 2008 crisis. Yellen sees some fiscal space as desirable with high debt to GDP ratio at 77 percent, so that the government could respond to some adverse event in the future. This applies to today's low interest environment with stock market volatility. The higher dividends help reduce the need to sell stocks in a volatile stock market and limit this to occasional selling. Using estimates from Yale Prof. Shiller's website for past 100 years data diversified U.S. stocks with high dividends pay about 4.4% in annual dividends outpacing the inflation average of 3.2%, and 5.6% appreciation in value of the stock each year. This helps preserve retirement capital. As many high dividend large cap stocks are also value stocks there is an additional value effect in holding these stocks.

U.S. Fed chairwoman Yellen moves cautiously to raise rates in December 2015. The Fed raises the benchmark federal funds rate-its overnight lending rate- from near zero to between 0.25% and 0.5%. Yellen emphasized her cautious approach by saying "we have very low rates and we have made a very small move." This follows seven years of near zero rates after the QE program for monetary easing under Ben Bernanke, the previous chairman, following the 2008 financial crisis. The Fed plans to raise rates gradually and slowly over 3 years. With oil prices falling below $35 the prospect that inflation may fall well below the 2% target could put off further plans to raise rates. Yellen said the Fed would "monitor inflation very carefully," and if it remained at unexpectedly low levels the Fed would reconsider its outlook and respond with "appropriate policy."

U.S. Federal Reserve minutes for Sept. 16-17, 2014 released October 8, show the mood shifting away from raising interest rates, as a stronger dollar and weak overseas growth are likely to lower U.S. economic growth, A stronger dollar is likely to keep inflation down. Fed officals showed serious concern about slowing economies of Europe, Japan and China lower U.S. exports. A former Fed adviser Jon Faust, director of the Center for Financial Economics at John Hopkins University, says even with no action from the Fed on interest rates, the stronger dollar makes financial conditions more restrictive, and acts as a tightening. The Fed minutes are before the crisis in Hong Kong which created geopolitical tensions and affects foreign investment climate for China, reducing Chinese growth even further.

David Kostin, Goldman Sach's U.S. equity strategist and his prediction of the S&P 500 at 1250 at the end of 2012. The S&P was at 1421 on April 1, 2012, the highest it has been since May 20, 2008. In his research note Kostin says that over the longer term the stock market will offer opportunities after a more normal growth environment is reestablished. This is similiar to the view held by John Bogle, founder of Vanguard. For the short term- the 2012-2013 time frame Kostin sees tactical risks, and results below average. Are bubble type incentives inflating the size of the U.S. auto market in 2012-2013 as happened in the past decade. This could hurt future sales. Japanese automakers have sharply increased incentives to make a come back after the tsunami and earhtquake restricted supplies. U.S. automakers are reluctant to go further down the incentives route that hurt them in the past decade. The result is higher inventories for Detroit automakers, another undesirable result. General Motors had 5 months of Malibu supply at dealers in Nov. 2012 at the current sales rate, Ford 4 months of Fiesta subcompact inventory and 73 days of total inventory overall, Chrysler 6 months of 2013 Dodge Dart inventory. GM has 3 months of Chevy Cruze inventory, and 138 days of Chevy Silverado pickup truck inventory. GM decided to idle one of two plants making the Cruze. In contrast Toyota has 2 months inventory for the Camry and Corolla. The largest incentives in the U.S. market are from Nissan, a 55% jump to average $4,273 in Nov. 2012 from $2,764 in Jan 2012. Honda increased incentives to average $2,428 from $1,978 in Feb. 2012, a 23% increase. Toyota up to average $2,075 in Nov 2012 from $1717 in Jan. 2012, a 21% increase, according to TrueCar.com, with zero percent interest rates not counted in these numbers. Ford offers $2895 off its 2013 Focus sedan, which has 2 months inventory. General Motors offers between $2900 and $3500 in average incentives , according to TrueCar.com....
