Many of the companies from the dot com tech bubble of 1999-2000 which were given $1 billion valuations went out of business, including names like Webvan and eToys. The same buble behaviour is evident in 2012 as many companies such as Facebook, Pinterest, Evernote, have $1 billion valuations, similiar to 2000. This is asignal that valuations may have spun out of control. It takes a few deep pocketed investors to raise the valuation of startup internet companies to these untested companies.

Martin Feldstein says China is gaining control of three problems it faces of shrinking export markets, the effects from a large stimulus in response to the 2008 financial crisis, and inflation especially high real estate prices. The economy is shifting to higher role for services and less dependence on exports under the new five year plan. The real estate prices are levelling off after steep increases. And inflation is under control. New investment will go into infrastucture needs such as power development and low income housing. As the economic problems are being tackled, the political problems remain. China faces an aging population under its one child policy, and it will have to support an increasing number of retired people in the future. Inequality and corruption are two problems that continue to grow and present challenges to the new leadership taking over in 2013.

Fiat Chrysler CEO Marchionne's strong opposition to the deep discounting of cars and focus on market share of the Detroit automakers. He scrapped discounting plans of the sales team at Chrysler and fired executives who pushed this strategy. Marchionne's office is located on the fourth floor of the technology center at Chrysler headquarters, next to Chrysler engineer's offices, and the management team meets in a nearby conference room. A look at the automobile market in the U.S. in October 2014 shows a large increase in SUV sales. Sales of the Jeep brand increased by over 50%, and Dodge Ram by 33% in Oct. 2014, compared to the month in 2013. Sales of the Honda Civic declined by 9%. Chrysler gained market share reaching 13.3%, with sales concentrated on the RAM and Jeep brands. Japanese makers had about 35% of the market, compared to about 46% for American brands Ford, GM and Chrysler. GM had 17.7% share in the U.S. market, Ford 14.7%, Toyota 14.1%.

Conversation with Ford's marketing chief Jim Farley who had 17 years with Toyota and marketed the Scion brand. He is a guy who likes to get a fresh look at things like talking to a security guard before coming up with a marketing plan for the Scion, and talking to a maintenance technician about the 150, all off the beaten track. He is excited about Ford's Eco-boost engine which is a direct injection technology engine which Ford can democratize as he puts it to put it, on some 500,000 cars and trucks by 2013, something not done before. This is a technology that scales up pretty well. Drivers in Western Europe are familiar with direct injection diesels as a way to cut high gas costs and cut emissions, but Americans are not that familiar with it. It boosts fuel economy by 20% and reduces emissions by 15%, and giving a V6 the power and torque of a V8 engine. Basically it injects fuel directly into the engine in small specific amounts so that very little is wasted and the turbocharger uses waste energy from exhaust gas to drive the turbine. He is also in charge of promoting and marketing the Eco-Boost engine, which will show up first in the 2009 MKS Lincoln sedan. ...

The Japan Automobile Dealer's Association says Toyota's Prius hybrid was No. 1 in sales in Japan in 2009 with 209,000 sales, three times the sales in 2008. This shows the high popularity of green cars in Japan and a sign of future trends. Hybrid sales made up 10% of new vehicle sales in Japan in 2009. By comparison hybrid sales in the U.S. were 2.8%. Second in car sales in Japan was the Honda Fit, third the Toyota Vitz, both small fuel efficient cars. About 1.6 million Prius cars were sold worldwide from 1997 to 2009, according to Toyota. Toyota has kept the price of the Prius affordable by pricing it at around $22,000.

Khalid al-Falih, chairman of Saudi Aramco, says at the World Economic Forum in Davos, on Jan. 26, 2016- "If prices continue to be low, we will be able to withstand it for a long, long time." With $630 billion in foreign currency reserves the Saudis are following a long term policy of full production. Gasoline subsidies are being reduced, IPO of Saudi Aramco being discussed to raise additional capital, and other steps being taken to plan for long term oil prices. Flexibility for a change in policy is diminished with the addition of Iranian oil production to supplies following the lifting of sanctions. The events in 2015-2016 of Russian bombing campaign in Syria, and the cutoff of diplomatic relations with Iran, have worsened the standoff with Iran and Russia in the Middle East conflict. As a result it appears that the Saudis are settling down for a long term policy of full production which would keep oil prices low for the long term. India, Japan, China, the U.S. and the European Union, Turkey and other countries benefit from low oil prices when their economies need a boost in 2016-2017....

Anticipation of the U.S. Federal Reserve raising interest rates in 2015 puts pressure on emerging market currencies, adding to pressure on the ruble. American Airlines after the merger with US Airways has $9.4 billion unrestricted cash by July 2014. Mr. Parker, the CEO of American, plans to prepay $2.8 billion in debt and aircraft lease payments, place $600 million more than required into pension contributions, and start a dividend and share buyback. Bernanke's defense of the action of the Fed's monetary policy making committee, on November 3, 2010, (with a vote of 10-1) to buy an additional $600 billion of Treasury securities over the next 8 months. His defense focusses on the prospects of deflation- how low inflation can morph into deflation (falling prices and wages), that can create a long period of economic stagnation. In addition, with low and falling inflation, Bernanke sees spare capacity in the US that can be utilized to reduce the number of jobless people. He points to the rise in stock prices and fall in long term interest rates in anticipation of the Fed's action, as evidence that this Fed move would improve financial conditions. Lower mortgage rates would make housing more affordable, higher stock prices would increase consumer wealth, confidence and spending. Spending would lead to higher incomes and profits for economic expansion, from this viewpoint. The situation in November 2010, was a deepening housing slump anticipated for 2011, gridlock after the 2010 midterm elections and no agreement on additional stimulus for 2011, the need to rebalance the global economy lacking cooperation from China (with China increasing imports and reducing exports and the US increasing exports and reducing imports). Fed's Bernanke does not mention these factors, and only hints at the gridlock towards the end of the statement. This Fed action will push the dollar lower, just as efforts to improve exports and the trade balance are underway. The Fed's committee sees the risks of commodities inflation as an acceptable risk in the current situation, and the use of a cautious approach assessing the purchase program regularly as sufficient measure of safety. As to difficulties of the unwinding of these policies, the Fed sees present danger outweighing the risks of no action. For emerging markets such as Turkey, India, Australia and other countries seeing even more inflows of capital, the risks are left to these countries to manage. The central banks of India and Australia moved to increase interest rates at the same time that the Fed made its move....

2012 car sales in France declined by 13.9%. This was higher than the 8.2% decline in the European market, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Analysts point to low new demand in the developed world- only 2% for U.S. and Europe compared to 70% in emerging markets. Replacement demand is also declining as younger people in urban areas increasingly use subway transportation and bicycles. Better made automobiles last longer and car owners drive less with an aging population reducing replacement demand. This reporter found few customers at auto dealerships in the centre of Paris.

He is confident that the new 2025 standards can be achieved. He said the industry had a bad habit of crying wolf and emphasized the need to get there so that the U.S. auto industry could be at the forefront of the changes taking place. He also cautioned the industry to not get comfortable with China's role as an emerging market that helped increase global sales.
