Brazil raises interest rates to over 13%, as it faces critical needs of private companies financing dollar based debt. This is likely to lead to further economic contraction and higher inflation. Inflation is at over 8% in 2015. Russia lowered the high interest rates ratcheted up to 17% to tackle a ruble collapse in 2015. Interest rates were lowered to but this move also aggravates inflation which is now at close to 17%.

Coal is seen as available freeely with India having the fifth largest coal deposits in the world. India is likely to be dependent on coal for 60% of its energy needs in 2030, even with an increase in renewable energy and nuclear power. India cites per capita carbon emissions which are about 1.7 for India, 6.2 for China, and 17.6 for the U.S. With about a fourth of the population without access to electricity and power shortages in other areas, India plans to use coal with plants designed for lower emissions, maintain filtration plants for water, and other antipollution measures.

Growth forecast shows growth slowing to 2.5%, not enough to make a dent in unemployment over 25%. A drop in the value of the Rand, lower mining commodity prices for exports, reduces any benefits from lower oil prices in 2014-2015.

Indonesia's president describes his plans to attract foreign investment to WSJ reporters in Dec. 2014. He points to the need for $500 billion in foreign investment for deep water ports, airports, oil exploration and investment in industry. Widodo says Indonesia will improve the investment climate to win projects that have gone to Vietnam, Malaysia and other countries from companies like Samsung.

In Congo and Tanzania areas with oil and minerals may lead to redefining national parks so that the areas where oil or minerals are found are excluded from the parks. Because of the size of the discoveries involved, the governments in the region and the oil companies are reluctant to give up the fight to continue exploration. With its long history of exploitation during colonial times and in recent decades with militias using the money generated leaving the people to live in poverty and conflict- effort needs to be focussed on creating a situation in which the oil and mineral resources can be used for economic growth and development.

Deteriorating prospects for foreign investment in South Africa for 2015. Economic growth is forecast by the IMF to remain below 2.5% for years till the power situation is tackled. Growth is estimated in 2014 at a mere 1.4%, not enough to reduce high unemployment of over 25%. Lower commodity prices for mining exports, and a decline in the value of the rand reduce any benefit from lower oil prices. The government of president Zuma is seen as ineffective in tackling power shortages, and making changes at electricity company Eskom which suffers from cash shortages.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
