Experts say CEO's have constituencies in the form of employees, shareholders and customers. This has affected CEO's as they responded to president Trump's comments on the Charlottesville attack. Even the cautious optimism that CEO's maintained during the early months of the Trump administration- as they sought not to miss out on representation on advisory councils- has now faded. Most CEO's have decided that it is not worth having this voice in advisory councils when they have to be seen as supporting positions on racism and culture they cannot support. One by one the actions by Trump on the travel ban, climate change agreement withdrawal, Charlottesville attack, has led to a shrinking of support. From non-involvement in Trump's campaign but cautious optimism, to a sense that it is not possible to work with the president without violating deeply held beliefs. Gini Rometty of IBM told employees that dialogue was critical to progress, but that " this group can no longer serve the purpose for which it was formed." A sense that not much would be accomplished, and the reputational cost for business was too high to make it worth the effort. In the span of 3 days three advisory councils to the president were disbanded.

Charles Koch says he is aghast at the way Trump suggested having Muslims register, sort of like Nazi Germany he says, in an intervew with Stephanpoulos of ABC News. He also disliked the phrase "carpet bombing of ISIS" by Ted Cruz. In this intervew Cruz says Bil Clinton did better than George W. Bush in controlling the federal budget, and adds that Hillary Clinton would make a better president than either Trump or Cruz.

The 2008 financial crisis hurt the prospects of older white Americans who faced higher unemployment. It also led to the rescue of the financial industry and rates dropping to zero hurting the savings of ordinary Americans, and as the FDIC's Sheila Bair pointed out not much done to rescue homeowners under water. During the 2008 election candidates John McCain and Barrack Obama, both had connections to the real estate and financial industry, to lobbyists for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as cited in the media. This time is no different with Clinton and Trump both having connections to Wall Street yet seeking the support of ordinary Americans hurt by the 2008 financial crisis. The only difference is that Clinton faces a movement within her party led by Bernie Sanders that calls for a different approach this time. There is also little difference between the economic team that Jeb Bush put together in its connections to Wall Street with Columbia University Business School Dean Hubbard and that of Trump.
