The threat from cloud computing to India's outsourcing software industry

IBM, Amazon and other U.S. companies are further ahead than Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services in cloud computing. Fewer outsourcing contracts are being made and the outsourcing of software is declining under cloud computing. Unless these companies adapt quickly this poses a serious threat to the outsourcing industry in India.

With $90 billion in market capitalization, TCS is India's largest company. Chandrasekharan describes the approach he took to double revenues since the 2009 financial crisis by focussing on new opportunities. He says the company can operate units independently and get 100% of the processing power of individual unit managers. At the same time have the scale to take multiple new intitiatives and invest large resources in new areas of tech because of its size. The new areas of growth include social, cloud, big data and analytics. TCS has new tech investments that could generate $3 to $4-5 billion in revenues in 3 years.
