A U.S. Senate report shows a huge $6.6 trillion deficit in retirement savings in 2013, which comes to about $57,000 per American household. Only a small part of the population benefits from the gains on the stock market- most have suffered from the losses suffered following the 2008 financial crisis, depletion in savings from periods of unemployment, lower paying jobs, little or no interest on savings accounts, and additional stress from rising student debt and medical costs.

Looked at this way one gets a real check on how much the money is worth today. The DJIA is still below the level in 2000 according to the figures cited by Browning, even with the nomnal DJIA at about 14250 in early March 2013. This may be part of the reason why sentiment is subdued, in addition to dependence on the U.S. Federal Reserve policies.

The DJIA is a price weighted average in comparison to the S&P 500 . This gives stocks such as IBM, Caterpillar, 3M, Chevron, a large role in the surge. IBM at $206 alone added about 1000 points out of a 7000 point surge and Caterpillar about 500 points. By comparison other stocks such as J&J have a smaller role. Stocks such as Bank of America that show a sharp climb make up only a small part of the surge.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
