French Socialists Win Majority in Parliament

France's parliamentary elections showed the Socialist party gaining 280 seats, with two allied parties getting 34 seats, giving the Socialists an absolute majority in parliament. Greens won 17 seats and the far left 10 seats. Former president Sarkozy's Union for a Popular Movement won 194 seats and allies 35 seats, for a total of 229 seats, down from 304 seats.The National Front led by Marie Le Pen won 2 seats. Marie Le Pen and Segolene Royal both lost their seats. The absolute majority gives Socialist president Hollande more room to implement his legislative program and make changes in eurozone architecture.
Wage flexibility by labor unions in France as part of an effort to improve competitiveness and reduce unemployment

Sarkozy, Hollande and the unions are in agreement on adopting some aspects of what Germany did to reduce high unemployment in the last decade- adjusting wages and benefits in recessionary periods to avert layoffs. The German "kurzarbeit" program is more elaborate and France has to make more progress to adopt that type of arrangement, but the direction is clear and has popular support in France in 2012-2013.

France and Italy's push is for improved financing of growth projects, coordination of monetary policy with budgets and fiscal situation of eurozone states, and mapping out a pathway that leads to joint issuance of eurobonds. French officials in the Hollande administration say the lack of this architecture is the cause of many of today's problems. Prime minister Monti of Italy played a key role in pushing for the changes at meetings in Rome and Brussels in June 21-27, 2012.

Francois Hollande says the EU mishandled the Greece crisis. Greece should have been handled as an extraordinary situation with earlier debt restructuring from public and private creditors to bring Greece's debt down to 60% of GDP. The current coordinated plan of the EU, ECB and the IMF only brings debt down to 120% of GDP in 2020. Hollande said he understands the need to reduce the budget deficit with cuts but without growth it can't work.
