The protests for democracy continue in Syria in May 2011. On May 20 2011, 26 protesters are gunned down. The Assad government continues to crackdown on the protests. Friedman sees the events in Syria having wide reaching impact on the Middle East. He calls it a keystone nation because of relations with Iran, the Golan Heights, the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah, the long border with Turkey, the border with Iraq, and Hamas relations with Syria. Compared to Egypt the international community has been for the most part silent in its support for the democracy protests in Syria. Friedman also asks the question about rival sects in Syria and other Arab countries and what happens afterwards. Would a post Assad period lead to people from rival sects putting aside differences and working together to build and sustain a democratic government. He says there is uncertainty but also that something deep down is coming to the top in the Arab world- that Arabs want to be full citizens of their countries with a voice in their government and in the way things are run in their countries.

Friedman says the protests are about Egypt above all else, and its about Egypt and Egyptians desire for a freedom, democracy, better education, better economic opportunities and better lives. He describes the need in other parts of the Arab world to transcend sectarian, tribal and other loyalties, to establish moderation and build the institutions for citizenship and democratic government.

Obama's Cairo speech set the tone. But realities on the ground such as achieving reconciliation and efforts to work together among all political parties and factions as the US leaves Iraq, is crucial to set a new direction on the ground. Friedman says Iraq, Pakistan and Afghaistan are part of the same war. And he points out what other experts are saying that in Afghanistan what is done there stays there. Baghdad has the potential for setting anew direction for the Muslim world, as it has been a centre of education, culture and influence in the Muslim world, in the manner Cairo has.

Public perception changed in this period. Columnists like Friedman said in the NYT that "GM is more dangerous to America's future" and acting like a "crack dealer." This as GM was offering buyers of large low fuel efficiency vehicles gas capped at $1/99 per gallon. Ford offered free gas upto $1000 with aprepaid Master charge debit card, enough for 6000 miles. Were the automakers lagging behind changing conditions and not adapting to changing public perception, by fighting higher fuel efficiency standards in Congress. link to Hyundai where its technology executive says Hyundai can meet higher standards with new technology and not even counting hybrids in the picture.
