The financial system for mortgages and the legal system are on a collision course say experts. The courts require due process, and one expert discounts reassurances from banks, because it does not go into how easily banks can prove ownership of the underlying mortgages. A legal expert at Georgetown University, sees a scenario in which the whole system comes to a halt, if instead of being lost, it is shown that mortgage documents were not properly transferred during each step of the securitization process. Much of the paperwork was rushed through in a mass production line during the recent wave of foreclosures, because the banks did not have the people and technology in place to deal with it- as pointed out in a Washington Post investigative report.

Alicia Munnell, is the director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. Munnell says the Domenici-Rivlin deficit reduction proposals should serve as the basis for putting Social Security on a sound financial basis. Tackling the budget deficit should not be focussed simply on the 12% of the budget that makes up nondefense discretionary spending in his view. Tackling Social Security would build confidence and reduce the long term deficit. The Domenici-Rivlin plan has the following proposals for Social Security- indexing the full retirement age after it reaches 67 to improvements in life span, a smaller cost of living adjustment, increasing the earnings subject to the payroll tax to about 180,000 from 106,800 in a gradual way, and gradually taxing employer and employee premiums for health insurance.

In this insightful essay Peggy Noonan, former spokesperson for president Reagan, says that Republicans like Speaker Ryan with the Republican Health Care bill are making the same error made by president Obama.. Noonan says she had suggested a different way for president Obama to show compassion for the uninsured- first wait till the 2008 financial crisis was tackled, tackled waste and fraud in Medicare first, then look at the option of expanding Medicare to help the uninsured, and not the approach taken of swiftly focussing on the Affordable Care Act early in the first term disregarding Republican objections. She says Republicans are making the same mistake now by ignoring the impact the bill would have on Trump's base of working class Americans who may be affected by the bill's provisions not taking into account incomes in offering incentives or subsidies. Noonan says Trump did get one thing right in calling it a "carnage" for the worsening opioid epidemic in America which has hit rural areas and parts of the midwest hard. Noonan says Eberstadt has correctly documented the collapse in working class Americans wages and standard of living, and Caldwell the opioid epidemic at another level to their health. She also supports journalist Carlson who questioned Speaker Paul Ryan's judgement about eliminating the tax on wealthy investors in new legislation in a Fox News interview, as she says responding to the sense of America at the moment means listening to the sense of being left out of ordinary Americans, who have done not as well as the wealthy who have benefitted from a surging stock market.  ...

The dollar declined 6% against the euro since the beginning of this year 2007, so this affects the purchasing power of the oil producing countries as oil prices are denominated in US$, and it affects the dollar cost of imported oil into the US because it takes more dollars to buy the same amount of oil. Other factors affecting demand are the credit crunch affecting smaller oil companies exploration budgets, higher prices have not yet affected demand globally, the lower level of inventories at this time compared with last year, and the upcoming hurricane season in the USA.

Why this recession will be deeper and more prolonged than the mild ones of 1991 and 2001. In a paper Rogoff and Reinhart argue that this will be a significant and protracted slowdown. The French system what works and what does not work compared to the Anglo-Saxon systems of Britain and the USA. Health care works, public transport and high speed rail works, nuclear energy and the energy industry works, education works for small elite universities but fails in the larger system. The large public projects are executed well, and France has done well with its long tradition of the state building infrastructure projects. But when it comes to individual initiative and starting up new companies such as in computers and high tech of that kind, France does not do so well. And the state collects a larger proportion of taxes than in other countries to finance these benefits. France is also good at rule making, which serves it well in controlling the kinds of bubbles that regularly hit the Anglo-Saxon countries. And with 21% of jobs of all workers in France in the public sector and government, with 49% when one includes related sectors protected from economic downturns, the French workers are much better protected than workers in Britain, USA and other countries from economic downturns. Unemployment stays high in upturns and at 8%, and in downturns does not go too far above 8%....
