NoSQL databases which use newer technologies are transforming Oracle's core businesss in database software. Oracle introduced relational database based on rows and columns and has dominated this business for three decades. Companies are transitioning to NoSQL databases because it has advantages including data analytical capabilities. New companies such as Workday are offering better products. Oracle's business in server is also declining. This is an example of new technologies and competitors upending the market for established players, a situation facing companies such as Dell, Oracle and H-P. Oracle has made acquisitions in the cloud computing field, but this will not change the basic situation facing Oracle of obsolescence in technologies.

Amazon profit was $92 million on sales of $23.18 billion for 2nd quarter 2015. Amazon shares went up by 17% with the profit announcement. By contrast Apple's results showed huge profits up 38% and improving margins, yet the stock price declined, possibly because of an expected slowdown in China sales which played a part in Apple's better results. This shows different ways analysts and investors look at tech companies. Amazon has growth of close to 20% for several years, with large investments in warehouses to speed shipping, and early investments in cloud computing. Amazon made operating profits of $703 million on sales increase of 25% to $13.8 billion for the 2nd quarter 2015 in the North American market. Overseas sales increased only by 3% to $7.6 billion showing operating loss of $19 million. Amazon plans to expand with a consumer retail site for Mexico. Sales growth in North America and in cloud computing are two bright spots. In cloud computing services Amazon Web Services increased sales 81% to $1.82 billion, higher than 1st quarter growth of 49%. Profit for 2nd quarter in cloud computing was $391 million, compared to $77 million in the same quarter in 2014. ...

IBM's acqusiition of Lombardi Software founded by Phil Gilbert is intended to bring a design-thinking focus as part of the culture change at IBM. The move is an effort to develop speed at IBM as it shifts to faster growing new businesses such as data analytics and cloud computing. As the ways companies that buy IBM products change their manner of operating with decisions on using IBM products made in many departments and away from IT departments, IBM sees the need to change. Speed also offers a way to tackle the shift to new product technologies, which involves a transition period and falling total revenues.

HP's long overdue overhaul of its antiquated and cumbersome internal systems and processes. Older Oracle software has been replaced with better software from Salesforce and Workday which uses cloud computing. Long delays hurt customer satisfaction and hurt sales. This was a priority for CEO Meg Whitman. Whitman hired a IT head at customers Verizon and Boeing to manage the change, as he knew the problems up close.

As HP separates into two separate companies that can be focussed and nimble, CEO Meg Whitman says that it has been a difficult road for HP. The new organization will have a lower cost basis by making job cuts as HP sales shrink- about 30,000 additional job cuts will be made in addition to the 55,000 announced earlier, mostly in enterprise services as the outsourcing operations have declined. HP sales and profits have declined with profit of $8.76 billion in fiscal 2010 on $126 billion in sales dropping to $5 billion in profit on $111.5 billion sales by fiscal 2014. Meg Whitman, CEO, says this should complete the changes and set the business up for future growth in new business areas. She also says HP has not done anything stupid in the last 4 years, alluding to the losses on the ill advised Autonomy acquisition. A big shift is being made in the Enterprise Services Group by setting a rule that no single account should be more than 10%- in 2013 just 3 accounts made up 65% of operating profit. One area of growth is cloud computing related business where it sees revenue growth of 20% for the next couple of years. Other areas include data analytics....

He describes the changes that smart manufacturing and new metal alloys can bring in manufacturing. America's unique advantages- its educational system, its open and youthful culture and better demographics, that position it to realize serious gains through technological change. Similiar advantages exist with educational systems and the spirit of innovation in Europe. Infosys growth is slowing down significantly. Infosys estimates sales growth of 6-12% for the 12 months April 2013 to April 2014. The US should push forward with its plans to compete with China and Taiwan in the chip business. That was the intent of the Chips and Science Act that both parties supported in Congress. The naysayers simply don't want to take up the difficult challenges and are wilting even before the struggle to regain advantage in chip US manufacturing technologies has begun. Gelsinger at Intel says the scale is necessary for gaining technologies, and making chips for other companies is key to doing this. The products business and business manufacturing for other companies complement each other and enables Intel to co-develop technologies and introduce them faster. Amazon cloud computing has given Intel its business order for AI fabric chips, other companies will also decide to go with a US supplier. Gelsinger's goal at Intel is to make it the second largest manufacturer of chips by 2030. This is not just the goal of Intel, it is the goal of the US to recover its chipmaking capacity and technologies as a major priority for the Nation. It takes ten years to make such a change, after the neglect of the US to add funding for US manufacturers as China and Taiwan have done. Intel is doing this faster  and losses will peak in 2024. Leadership at Intel must persevere with "bold, persistent innovation."   ...

Microsoft generates most of its profits from its Windows software and the Office Suite on the 315 million PC's sold annually. The Bing search engine and the XBox videogame have been marginally profitable or sustained losses. Ballmer's focus was on protecting the Windows franchise from new technologies and products. In the process Microsoft was not able to capitalize on new opportunities as technology shifted including cloud computing, smartphones and tablets. A new CEO after Ballmer is expected to come up with a new strategy.

Microsoft shares were up 7% after the announcement about the departure of Steve Ballmer from the CEO position. Steve Ballmer became president in 1998 to run Microsoft's operations. He was a college buddy of Microsoft founder Bill Gates at Harvard. Ballmer graduated from Harvard with a degree in mathematics and economics and worked for 2 years at P&G before Gates persuaded him to join him at Microsoft. For decades the duo of Gates and Ballmer ran the company till Ballmer was made CEO in 2000. Ballmer completes three decades at Microsoft. During most of this period Ballmer focussed on protecting the existing franchise of Windows operating systems software and the Office suite sold on all PC's except Apple Macs. Missteps include Windows Vista, which was followed by the more successful Windows 7. Windows 8 has failed to make a significant dent in the market. A poor decision in retrospect to acquire Yahoo for about $44 billion did not happen, as Yahoo did not pursue discussions. The efforts in smartphones with Nokia and the Surface tablet have failed to produce results. Under Ballmer Microsoft only gradually shifted to cloud computing. The departure of Ballmer comes as a major reorganization was underway in 2013, and the company was shifting its strategy to become a provider of devices and services in place of its main role making software sales for PC's....

Microsoft embraces open-source software for the first time. CEO Steve Ballmer once considered Linux open-source software "a cancer." Microsoft announces the creation of Microsoft Open Technologies in April 2012, as a unit that will manage the introduction of open source software programs and the compatibility of Microsoft software with open-source software. Cloud computing has strong elements of open-source software in it and Web services provided by Google and Facebook rely on Linus's open-source software. Younger programmers are trained with working on Linux and it is important for Microsoft to accept and work with the open-source software community to retain its influence in the field.
