UK Disability sickness benefits jumped from 46 billion pounds to 65 billion in five years from 2019 to 2025. By 2030 it could reach 100 billion pounds. Labour's reforms intend to tackle this with savings of 5 billion pounds setting a new direction for Disability benefits. Already there are 1 million more claimants than in 2019 in Britain. There are 3.3 million claimants in 2025, projected to go up to 4 million in 2027. ...

Jenny Strasbourg of the WSJ provides this much needed report from London about the courageous decision by AstraZeneca and Oxford University to give vaccines away at no profit to the whole world, to billions of people in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Without this brave decision by a British company and a British University the world would be a lot poorer, more variants could have happened, making us realize the great contribution Britain has made and how indispensable it is to the planet. Add to this the effort of Indian companies including Serum Institute that provided the manufacturing facilities and capabilities for making most of the British vaccine. AstraZeneca delivered 2.3 billion doses of the vaccine globally as of mid-December, according to the company. The International Monetary Fund estimates that low and middle income countries received 3.25 billion vaccines as of Dec. 11, About half of this or 1.6 billion doses were Astra Zeneca shots. This is a bigger share than any other vaccine by far and a life saver to the world. AstraZeneca stepped up early in a true to the best ideals in Britain to meet the needs of the world-  aiming to deliver 3 billion doses in 2022 and sell them at no profit as long as the pandemic continues. As the shot does not need cold storage it is ideal for India and other Asia, Africa and Latin America. "We are all very proud throughout the company of the impact we have had," says AstrZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot. By far the biggest manufacturing was done at Serum Institute of India which supplied 1.3 billion doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to 70 countries. Mr. Modi pushed forward the export of vaccine made in India to the world from the beginning in the same spirit of cooperation and the best ideals that Britain was living upto. Serum Institute can produce as much as 250 million doses of vaccine a month making it possible for India to tackle the vaccination population of 1.3 billion people.   None of this could have happened without Oxford University and AstraZeneca and Indian companies with Mr. Modi's active support living up to the best ideals of Britain and India for the world. Caterpillar is asking workers at its Canadian plant to accept a large cut in wages and benefits. Wages and benefits at Caterpillar's rail equipment plant in LaGrange, Illinois, are less than 50% of the costs at the Caterpillar locomotive assembly plant in London, Ontario. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics U.S. manufacturing labor costs per unit of output were 13% lower in 2010 than in 2000. This compares with an increase of 2.3% in Germany, increase of 18% in Canada, and increase of 15% in South Korea. Caterpillar is also asking for more flexible work rules at the Canadian plant. The flip side of this is that U.S. workers are earning significantly less in manufacturing, especially considering inflation, and the middle class is shrinking in the U.S. At the same time wages in the U.S. that are more competitive with wages in Mexico and China with flexible work rules and use of automation and technology, is helping to reverse the shrinking of the manufacturing sector in the U.S....

Shoichiro Toyoda's son Akio takes over as new CEO of Toyota. He got the MBA degree from Babson College in Massachusetts and joined the company at 27. Initially Shoichiro was opposed to Akio joining the company. Even today with the Toyoda family owning only 2% of company shares there is a faction that supports Akio and a faction that dislikes the founding family's involvement in running the company. So the job has not been an easy one for Akio. At one point Akio admitted himself into a hospital early in his career after friction with one of his bosses. Things settled down after that and eventually Akio headed the China operations, where he engineered the merger of Tinajin with FAW to give Toyota a more capable partner to expand in China. And to get Akio to take on the new role, the elders at Toyota like his father and others had to ask Fujio Cho to stay on as chairman, even though he has a back ailment that made him keen on resigning. Current CEO Watanabe will become vice chairman and help Cho with his duties. The idea may be to have more experienced people at the top as Akio takes over and makes changes to the conservative culture and bureaucratic ways of Toyota. This eases the transition especially if there are people who are wary of the founding family and Akio's more direct and bolder style of management....

Kamala Harris returns to Zambia after a visit to that country to meet her grandfather Gopalan almost 50 years earlier. At that time Gopalan, from the Indian Civil Service, was given as as an advisor to Zambian president Kenneth Kuanda, helping organize the settling refugees from Southern Rhodesia. This was the period of apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Kamala as a young girl learned about democracy and political participation from these visits to both Zambia and India. During this visit Kamala Harris visits Zambia, Tanzania, and Ghana, parts of British West and East Africa. Not only is this visit a way to revive relations with these countries, it also marks the end of a period after the Cold War ended in 1990, when the US did not engage with Africa and South East Asia in the way it had done during the Cold War when democratic institutions modeled on the British parliamentary system competed with Soviet Bloc Marxist systems.

Britain's prime minister spent 3 nights in intensive care for coronavirus. He said the "development of a vaccine is the most urgent shared endeavor of our lifetimes." He will confirm Britain's pledge of 388 million pounds for vaccine research, tests and treatments, part of 744 million pounds to the the global effort against coronavirus. "The more we pull together and share our research the faster our scientists will succeed."

An online pledging conference will take place on Monday as part of the vaccine fundraising drive of the European Union and other countries. The initiative from the EU and president of the EU Ursula von der Leyen, is to raise 7.5 billion euros for vaccine research and development of a vaccine for coronavirus. It has the support of Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Norway, Japan, Canada, and other countries. The month long investment drive will go on till the Global Vaccine Summit on June 4.

India's central bank chief, Rajan, favors a lower inflation target of 4%, with fluctuations of 2% up or down. Lower inflation is critical for India to achieve higher growth rates. The World Bank lowered the rate of growth in the global economy but kept the rate of growth of 6.4% for India unchanged. Rajan also favors creating a more formal system for setting rates, with a committee like the Open Market Committee in the U.S. deliberating over the different factors for such a decision. Rajan was a professor at the University of Chicago, and chief economist at the IMF, before joining the central bank. Central bank policies have helped stabilize India's currency, the rupee. The lower cost of oil for India with an oil import bill of $100 billion is a big boost for economic growth. For the global economy this comes at a time when China's growth rate is slowing to below 7%.

The Indian Finance Minister Mukherjee presented his new budget and talked about the new administration's plans for investment and its priorities. The Rural Employment program which guarantees 100 days of work to each indigent family will get an increase in funding to $8.1 billion or 391 billion rupees for this fiscal year. THe goal was set for cutting in half the percentage of the people in India that are poor in five years, which the government measures by calories consumed. The Indian government estimates that 27.5% of Indians were poor in 2005 using this measure. To finance investment government spending will increase 36% and the deficit for the 2009-10 fiscal year will reach an estimated 6.8% of GDP, up from an estimated 6.2% in 2008. Abig part of this spending will be increases in infrastructure spending which will go up from 6% to 9% of GDP by 2014.

Gabriele Steinhauser's interview July 16, 2015 with the chief of eurozone finance ministers, Dutch finance minister Dijsselbloem. He tells Steinhauser the lowest moment in the crisis came on the night of July 5 when the referendum results were announced. He expected a "no" vote as he knows this is the way this sort of referendum turns out. He was present in all the critical moments of the crisis. And this moment gave him a sad feeling because of his conviction that it would take tough measures to sort out something like Greece, and the Greek people had been given the idea that this vote could change things. He says Tsipras heard a lot from European leaders on July 7 about lack of trust. Following an ultimatum to Greece about Grexit or acceptance of the measures to be taken, and Greece's acceptance on July 9, more hurdles emerged on July 11, 2015. One came from the IMF with an estimate of 86 billion euros as the cost of new loans to Greece, and possible writedowns on 180 billion euros already loaned. He says Greece's new finance minister, Euclid Tsakalotos, a Oxford educated economist, who was Alternate Minister for International Economic Affairs in the Syriza government from Jan to July 5, 2015, showed a remarkable ability to absorb the criticism as a lot of the bad news surfaced. A Wikipedia note on Tsakalotos shows a similiar background 10 years apart for George Osborne, Britain's chancellor of the Exchequer, and Tsakalotos- both educated at St. Paul's school and Oxford, and Tsakalotos's wife Heather Gibson also from Britain. Tsakalotos was seen as being at ease with the EU ministers, who thanked him for his attitude, of grace under a lot of pressure, and the way he handled the matter. Another piece of difficult news, says Dijsselbloem, was the insistence of German finance minister Schauble on a default scenario of Greece opting out of the euro for a number of years being included in a eurozone statement. After 17 hours of drafting, the final statement left this scenario out. It included a 50 billion euro privatization fund with half to be setup to help capitalize Greek banks, quarter to pay down debt, and a quarter to generate economic growth. Compared to the day following the referendum, Dijsselbloem says he feels it will be a difficult road with many problems, but he feels now that it can be sorted out. Stangely he does not make any mention of the role of the French under premier Valls and president Hollande between July 6 and July 9, including sending advisors to Greece to help draft proposals, in turning the situation around. Only saying he is relieved- possibly of not having some of the burden of the failure to resolve the crisis falling on the Dutch finance minister....

That would enhance the movement open people and goods, and cultural connect that would create a new northeast- southeast Asian connection. It restores what was the long lost connection that India once had with nations from Thailand to Indonesia, and Vietnam to Japan through China. This is the connection that brought Buddhism from India's north east in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to these countries.  Look East, Act East, the Quad, Indo-Pacific Economic Framework are all ways of saying the same thing of making the East connections the vital ones in India's social, economic and political, cultural life, restoring the connections in which India thrived and existed as one entity. It also brings life to the Gulf countries which are otherwise isolated in a sea of European nations on one side of the Mediterranean and Russia on the other side near the Black Sea that have different historical interests and cultures. This sees the central Asian connections through Afghanistan as being secondary and of less significance in the long history of nations such as India, China, Korea and Japan from the Buddhist era. That secondary connection brought an interruption of the long Buddhism and Vedanta civilization in India, intermittent wars, and the division of the country under the British Empire. It is a natural progression in a long history that seeks to restore the natural and intuitive connections to the Vedanta and Buddhist regions in the East that are part of the Indo-Pacific. These are now integrated with the settlers from Britain who sought to build better and fairer societies based on the rights of man in the new nations of Australia and America. This gives new life and meaning to this vast Indo-Pacific region. The British Empire and the other colonial empires simply bring back an orientation to the period of colonial wars of the nineteenth and twentieth century, which tore apart China and then Japan, and used resources in India for these wars, and which ended with the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These wars also leave behind memories in China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan and Korea that can only be truly be put behind by looking at Vedanta and Buddhist Asia as it once was from India to China to Japan. And to the regions of Australia and the US that brought new meaning to the modern scientific period and the rights of man in settler societies away from Europe. ...

VW chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch tells reporters in Wolfsburg, Germany, that a small group of engineers starting working on emissions cheating software as early as 2005 when they could not find technical solutions to U.S. nitrogen oxide emissions within their timeframe and budget. When a technical solution was later available, it was not used. Poetsch said; " We are not talking about a one-off mistake, but a whole chain of mistakes that was not interrupted at any point along the time line."

The use of fast track procedures under 510 K, for approval of Ren-Gen's Menaflex product to treat knee injuries. Under 510K rules for fast track no clinical trials are required, because the product is similiar to already existing products. Menaflex does not have asimiliar product, yet the FDA allowed Menaflex to be treated as fast track. The closest is orthopedic surgical operation, which is quite different. Menaflex is a C shaped pad used to repair a torn meniscus, a rubbery substance made from cow collagen that that acts like ashock absorber between the knee bones. Their is a booming market for meniscus repair among sports athletes. In fact originally Ren-Gen did not even apply as fast track, but only afte its clinical trials ran into trouble, did it try for fast track, which was turned down several times. At which point Ren-Gen got Democrats Senator Robert Menendez, Rep Frank Pallone, Chairman of the Health Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep Rothman of Hackensack where Ren-Gen is based, and Senator Frank Lautenberg to intervene. At this point Senator Menendez and the others wrote to the FDA Commisssioner Dr Von Eschenbach, and Menendez spoke to the Commisssioner personally on the phone. After this intervention things started moving in Ren-Gen's dirtection, bypassing the FDA staffers who had reservations, and a special panel was appointed that again excluded anyone that had reservations, in an unusual procedure, which approved Menaflex. Now Congress and the Obama administration are being asked to review the whole process the FDA uses for medical devices because of the controversy this has caused about what is seen as unfair influence of companies in FDA approval process. Menaflex say those who had reservatoions faces alot of pounding and wear and tear between the knee bones and its safety and effectiveness needs to be proven before approval. It has been approved in Europe for afew years, but only 2800 patients have used it in Europe, only a small proportion of patients, and not enough is known about its effectiveness and any issues. ...

The alliance between the PRD on the left and the PAN party on the right in Mexico on an anti-corruption platform creates a third option in Mexico after the PRI under president Nieto, and the party of Lopez Obrador. Obrador and the candidate of the PAN/PRD Ricardo Anaya, 38 years, now are level in polls with 32 percent support and the PRI candidate Antonio Meade at 25%. The Nieto administration is tainted with several corruption scandals and about 75% of Mexicans want a change in government, in a Reforma poll. Obrador contested for the PRD in 2006 in a close election, and in 2012 formed his own party. If successful this would be the first time three parties form together to form a coalition government in Mexico, with the Citizens Party joining the PRD/PAN coalition. This is similar to the way in which the left and the right are getting together to topple the old politicians with new younger faces in other countries- including in France, and in Italy in upcoming elections with the left and the right represented in the En Marche movement in France, and in the Five Star Movement in Italy. In Germany a left -right coalition is being put together with the CDU and the Social Democrats coming together on social issues. After state elections in 2016 the opposition winning 3 governorships from ruling PRI, and the election in the state of Mexico where a divided field made it possible for the ruling PRI to hold onto power even after losing 1 million votes, both the PRD and the PAN parties realized the need to come together on an anti-corruption platform. Corruption and rejection of the old politicians bringing in a younger generation into politics is a major issue in many countries. ...

Microsoft's Satya Nadella got his start at age 24 at Bing search engine. He is now 56 years. During this period he worked with both Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer who succeeded Gates at Microsoft. He is now remaking the Bing Search engine by using AI. This has happened since 2018 when he met Altman at the Sun Valley Tech conference in Idaho. He invested $1 billion in Altman's OpenAI, and has recently brought in Suleyman of Inflection who is a competitor of  Altman's OpenAI into Microsoft with the idea of setting up an internal AI business as well. To do this he has invested $10 billion in advanced AI chips that he has bought from chipmakers which have reduced the capital available for Microsoft's other businesses. This WSJ report by Dotan and Jin says Altman started his venture because he did not want to let AI to be led by Google silently developing its own version and doing leapfrog over competitors. A At this point in 2024 Google, Facebook and Amazon are building their own AI talent and making large investments in the chips that support AI. It is rapidly becoming an oligopoly of a few tech companies that makes deals among themselves for strategic advantage and protect themselves from public or government regulatory scrutiny. The controversy surrounding the firing and rehiring of Altman at OpenAI has brought new scrutiny from the FTC. The monopolistic behaviour of tech companies and their splitting the tech market among themselves as Google and Apple have done show the need for government action to prevent a repeat of this in AI. And to take action to break up existing monopolies in Search engines and in the Internet as Theodore Roosevelt did at the turn of the century for the oil business, breaking up Rockefeller's Standard Oil and Esso. Only when that happens can the true potential of the Internet be realized for Education, Health and other fields. Who can say that the iPad or iPhone or Google's Search engine has increased global literacy or American literacy? By freeing up these technologies- that belong to the people of America and the world- for education, health and other fields of human development mankind can advance once again. By regulating provide the ground rules for good use instead of the current danger of the Internet acting in ways to reduce public knowledge to levels that cannot sustain democratic process, and create stratified society where each group only sees what it has seen before and does not explore the world or knowledge in all its variety, all its ability to surprise us with new discoveries. ...

Peugeot plans to shut down its plant at Aulnay-sous-Bois near Paris in 2014. About 3000 jobs will be lost at the plant. In all Peugeot plans to cut 8500 jobs, about 8% of its workforce in France. Peugeot says the pace of losses is unsustainable, with Peugeot losing 200 million euros in cash each month, putting the entire enterprise in peril. This also raises more questions about France's competitiveness as 400,000 manufacturing jobs were lost in the last ten years according to government data. Peugeot is seeing declining sales because of slowing sales in southern Europe, a critical market for Peugeot. Overall capacity utilization for Peugeot dropped from 86% in 2011 to an average of 76% in the second half of 2012, with sharper declines in the small car segment on which the company has focussed. The Aulnay plant produced 300,000 cars 2007, by 2011 this came down to 135,000 cars. Peugeots strategy of making smaller economy style cars with higher French labor costs presents a challenge say analysts, and its slower move into Asian markets has not given it the advantage enjoyed by German manufacturer VW. In addition to the 3000 jobs lost at Aulnay, Peugeot plans to cut 1400 jobs at its Brittany plant in Rennes, and 3600 corporate jobs. To assure unions the company will build a new car at the Rennes plant in 2016, and could move 1500 jobs from Aulnay to another plant near Paris....

OPEC fails to agree on increasing production quotas at its meeting in June 2011. Iran, Venezuela, Ecuador, and a number of other countries which have very little spare capacity were against increasing the quotas. The Saudis, the UAE, Kuwait argued for an increase because of increasing demand and disruptions in the supply from Libya and other parts of the Middle East. The Saudi oil minister described this as the most difficult OPEC meeting he has attended. Analysts expect the Saudis to increase production in the absence of an OPEC agreement.

Asian economies have seen a an increase in export dependence in recent years, with 47% of GDP depending on exports. China is a big exporter and will see its 11 % growth in peak years down to 8% and India which is not as big an exporter as China down to 7%. 5% growth would spell trouble in these countries with migration to urban areas from farming country and the lack of a social safety net as well as large number of people who need jobs to earn a living.

Venetians say their city is being invaded by hordes of tourists who live in hotels on Mestre and cross a causeway to come to Venice. Venice gets an estimated 2 million tourists. A new referendum seeks to separate the city administration of Venice from Mestre giving Venice the autonomy to protect the city against floods and overburdening by tourists. Mestre has 3 times the population of Venice and is on dry land so that decisions made in Mestre are not in the interests of Venice.  The referendum is intended to stop cruise ships from coming to Venice at a time when new hotels are coming up in Mestre. The mayor and city administration oppose the referendum creating a situation after the damage caused by floods on November 12 which show how chaotic it is. Seventy two submersible yellow flood gates designed to prevent the flood were tested and could have been made activated on November 12, but no action was taken, causing about $1 billion in damage. The city is offering $5000 as compensation for businesses, but a bakery that sustained close to $77,000 of damage like other businesses is looking to the referendum to change the way the place is governed.  ...

Barbara Wesel of DW.com says 2017 will be a difficult year for the European Union. Elections will be held in the Netherlands, France, Germany, and possibly in Italy. The Netherlands election is coming up this month and the far right party led by Wilders is likely to gain as much as 25% of the vote but have to negotiate with other parties in a fractured parliament to form a government. Elections in France show Marie Le Pen winning the first round, with an uncertain result in the second round between Le Pen and Macron. A win by Le Pen could lead to the unwinding of the EU. In Germany another coalition government is expected with the SPD playing a larger role as it regains favor with the voters under the EU's Martin Schulz. Wesel says Germany and Merkel are looking like a beacon of stability and hope as the world looks for leadership with America looking inward to fix problems at home.

A striking change is coming over US airlines as they turn their focus from operating costs to taking out unprofitable routes, reducing the size of their plane fleets, and increase the number of seats filled on a flight. The numbers bear this out. According to ATA the airlines reduced fleets from 3469 aircraft to 2747 aircraft from 2000 to 2005. American Airlines is typical in discontinuing 27 MD-80 aircraft which are older and gas guzzling. Delta and Northwest used the bankruptcy period to to get court approval to return many planes to leaseholders by breaking the leases- before breaking the lease parking the planes was more expensive than flying them at a loss. As a result according to ATA US airlines filled an average of 77.6% up from 75.4% in 2004. With this strategy airlines recovered some of their pricing power. US Dept of Transportation statistics show prices are higher than at any time since Sept 11, 2001 and the Air Travel Price Index, increased by 9.1% in 4th quarter 2005 over 4th quarter 2004. And airlines are being more restrained in getting into new routes just because some other airline has eliminated that route. Airlines however have to be careful to increase prices just enough but not too much that demand starts falling, and this is possible with fewer seats on more popular routes. Other methods the airlines are using are sophisticated O&D origin and destination revenue management systems which reduce the number of inexpensive, and unprofitable seats available on the internet. Larger airlines have tried to get back corporate customers by reducing the extremely high fares they used to charge and instead raising last minute fares because corporate customers see this as a price burden they are willing to shoulder. Larger airlines are doing better in relation to the price discounters like Southwest and JetBlue. With Southwest's hedging strategy against fuel price increases not as useful as in prior years it too faces need to raise fares....

Delivery of infrastructure, education, healthcare and other improvements could not have been delivered as they are today with weak governments. Gandhi understood clearly the effects of divide and rule and how this had led to over one hundred years of disinvestment in India by 1900. Even after 1950 it took another 70 years for governments to follow the experience of Japan and China and rapidly modernize. Separate electorates as suggested by Ambedkar for lower castes would only further weaken India, as would communal representation of that type. Not integrating the one third of India that was under princely states would have had the same effect. Sardar Patel grasped clearly the effects of not integrating these princely states would continue the effects of divide and rule. In this way the foresight and wisdom of Gandhi and Patel have given a new generation of leaders the sound fundamentals on which to build a modernized nation, the largest democracy, and a nation with a young population that is fulfilling the aspirations of its young people. ...
