Of this 37 only 1 each from Michigan and Wisconsin, and 2  from Arizona from swing states, none so far from Georgia or Nevada or Pennsylvania. What does this tell us? It says that 264 minus 37 or 227 Congressional Democrats think Biden should run only about 15% of Congressional Democrats vs 85% of Congressional Democrats. And of the swing states only 4 Democrats. Polls- 4 months before elections polls are not really useful and not meaningful, a lot can change. Congressmen in swing districts are likely to have questions, and it is not uncommon for this to happen before the election say people who follow Congressional history. The fact that 7 are from Republican states like Texas or Ohio and could be impacted may give some idea for their reasoning. Of the others 7 are from California and 3 from New York. Which suggests the largest group is from California, remove the 7 and take out the 4 Independents and 34 goes down to 23 or about 9% vs 91% of the rest of the country having faith in president Biden. In any case California is unlikely to go Republican or Trump Republican by a long shot. ...

Solar energy production continues to grow in the US South in states like Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Texas. In Georgia and Tennessee pine trees were planted in large numbers to replace crops with lumber when crop prices were low. With low prices for logs University of Georgia research shows 10X income even for a few acres for landowners in the South when they shift from pine trees to solar panels.

Timber Company Rayonier's CEO says for an acre of timberland income is $80 compared to $800 or $1200  for solar farms. When solar companies buy timberland they pay 5 times timberland value. Weyerhaeuser alone has 130,000 acres with 70 options to build solar farms. US needs 250,000 acres a year for solar farms to generate needed solar energy.

When land is near a wildlife preserve and bear territory it should rightly be preserved from solar farms which is happening in this case cited by WSJ in Tennessee.

Technology is reshaping the world of oil by 2018. The U.S. Permian Basin stretching from West Texas to New Mexico now produces more oil than the UAE and is likely to soon surpass Iran- production is at 3.1 million barrels a a day. There are as many rigs as in 2011 yet the production has tripled because of the use of high tech rigs that can move quickly to new locations over wide areas and with tech that can see hundreds of feet into the rock. By 2019 the U.S. will surpass Russia as the world's largest producer of oil. The drop in oil prices to about $40 a barrel in recent years is a result of Saudi efforts to block shale oil development by lowering prices. This has not worked. Initially some high cost producers exited the industry and the shale industry suffered. Over time the new technologies spurred by lower oil prices have led to the anticipated drop in cost. Shale oil can now be produced by core producers at $40 a barrel and still be profitable according to this WSJ report. All Middle Eastern countries cannot meet budget needs at $40 a barrel. In 2018 oil prices increased back up to $77 a barrel. In the next wave of declining prices the shale industry is better positioned than the OPEC countries.   ...

Daniel Yergin cites an estimate by IHS Cambridge Energy Associates which shows oil from shale and dense rock, which was about 1 million barrels a day in 2011, could reach 3 million barrels a day 2020. North Dakota where much of the production is taking place is now fourth in oil production in the U.S. after Texas, Alaska, and California, and is likely to move up to second place. U.S. imports of oil come primarily from Canada 25%, Mexico 11%, Venezuela 9%, and the Persian Gulf 16%. Canadian oil sands development has increased production and the completion of the Keystone pipeline will increase the share of oil imports from Canada. This is shifting the dynamic of oil away from the Persian Gulf, with the volatile politics in the region, and more towards North America.

The growing middle class in Mexico is to be seen in cities like Queretaro, far from the drug violence seen in cities on the Texas border. Even though growth has averaged only 2-3%, the number of Mexicans who see themselves as middle class in a country of over 100 million is 65%, according to a survey by pollster Jorge Buendia. The definition of middle class is a new refrigerator, a car and a couple of cellphones. Sometimes this is also aspiring to be or thinking you are middle class. A big change is the shift to small families. Astonishing as this may sound, Mexico's fertility rate has declined from 7.3 children per woman in 1960 to 2.3 today, according to the World Bank. The U.S. fertility rate is 2.1 children per woman.

Harold Meyerson compares the continuing inhumanity of separating parents from children that president Obama has to face with the choice presented to Lt. Colonel Jager at the Berlin Wall in 1989. Jager decided to let both parents visiting West Germany to return to East Germany to their children, even though the father had a stamp on his passport banning a return. He says the Republican control of Congress could last till 2023 by which time current law would have separated millions of parents and children. In 2012 about 13% of schoolchildren in California and Texas had an undocumented immigrant as a parent, according to the Pew Research Center. And for the last 6 years of the Obama administration deportations have reached 400,000 a year, leading to a lot of broken families.

A Brookings Institution study of hiring trends and unemployment in the 100 largest metropolitan areas of the U.S. at the end of 2012, shows 78 metropolitan areas adding jobs in the 4th quarter 2012. 14 of these areas had more jobs at the end of 2012 compared to before the 2008-2009 recession. Six of these cities were in Texas. This included Knoxville, which gained from jobs added at a nearby VW plant. Other cities were Oklahoma City, Omaha, Salt Lake City, Charleston. Only three cities in the East and West are on the list- Pittsburgh, Washington and San Jose, and none in the midwest, showing the geographical divide in job gains. And Washington D.C. will lose government jobs after job cuts in the government. Charleston will lose jobs from cuts in military spending.

Greg Ip cites the case of Texas, where businesses helped defeat anti-transgender  legislation, as an example of how businesses have decided it is best to cut reputational risk. Business now generally supports being friendly to gay, transgender, and domestic partners in their policies. This is because business generally favors stability and the status quo, says Ip. Business is known for staying away from extreme positions, being more open and tolerant as a way of doing business.   Where large business is located in big cities, gay and transgender, climate change, are seen as accepted changes, not as liberal causes. For this reason most of the CEO's on Trump advisory councils resigned after the president's controversial remarks critical of both sides in the Charlotte car attack. Ip cites the situation businesses in the South faced in the 1960's when their stores were boycotted after they opposed desegregation- most lost sales and customers with the negative publicity. The situation today is that business is now moving away from reflexive support of Trump or Republicans, says Ip. Mainstream Republicans are also distancing the party from the fringe elements in the party.  ...

The number of supercommuters is up significantly as a result of the drop in home prices and high unemployment. It is up 60% in Manhattan since 2002, up to 59,000 or 3% of the workforce. In the Philadelphia- New Jersey corridor- it is 7.3% according to NYU. Houston saw a large increase between 2002 and 2009. In Maricopa County near Phoenix, 131,000 people or 8.6% of the labor force supercommutes. About 13% of the workforce or 427,000 people supercommute in Texas. Prof. Mitchell Moss of New York University, defines a 100 mile plus commute to get to work as a supercommute. His work at NYU's Rudin Center for Transportation shows 1.15 million people supercommuting in 10 major U.S. metropolitan areas. Employers are showing flexibility not wanting to have to dispose off properties, and employees prefer not to uproot families.

This editorial in the WSJ says Judge Hannon was right to question the wholesale suspension of immigration law by the DHS memos blanket use of discretion in impementing existing immigration law. The ruling did not address the broader constitutional issues for an executive order that bypasses the states (and Congress) completely- 26 states have questioned the order. WSJ says Obama's executive order is going beyond presidential powers, and can be done by enacting legislation under Article I of the U.S. Constitution. Hannon's ruling justifies the injunction against the executive order on the basis of unfunded mandates such as the $198.73 it costs to process driver licenses for 500,000 illegal immigrants living in Texas from a total of 1.6 million illegal immigrants in the state, not even taking up the other costs related to education and other benefits.

Competition in the Chinese market between Coca Cola and pepsi is shifting from the traditional carbonated beverages to juices, teas and non-carbonated drinks. The Chinese governmet has discouraged acquisitions, and did not approve Coke's $2.4 billion acquisition of fruit juice manufacturer China Huiyuan Juice Group Ltd. Growth has to be maintained by investing and developing their own products for local tastes and culture. Both Pepsi and Coca Cola plan increased investments in China. Pepsi has 27 plants, five farms, and over 20,000 employees in China and expects to double the number of employees by 2015. Pepsi executives say Pepsi is following a"seed to shelf" approach in China, growing food on farms and developing teas and snacks for local tastes. In China Pepsi has a Lay line of chips with cool-cucumber flavors and Cao Ben le line of drinks based on Yin and Yang, cooling and warming. Pepsi's 13% growth in snack volume and 10% growth in beverage volume for its Asian, Middle East and Africa operations are mainly because of this growth in China and India. By contrast soft drink sales have declined for 5 years in the USA and come under criticism because of high levels of obesity in the USA. Pepsi's strategy is to move further into the interior of China, further west according to Pepsi executives. It plans to invest $2.5 billion in about 12 new food and beverage plants in the interior of China to be built over 3 years. Coke announced a $2 billion investment in late 2009, and is a lead sponsor for the Shanghai Expo. ...

Indian Finance Minister Sitharaman gives the following remarks in parliament on the White Paper presented to the 18th Lok Sabha in January 2024, describing the dire condition of the Indian economy by 2013 with mismanagement and "big ticket" corruption. India's Finance Minister Sitharaman describes the situation in three key areas by 2013 that left the economy of India in a fragile state, with projects stalled, development delayed, and capital investment not taking place. She gives as 3 main points of focus- the state of affairs at Defense Ministry, at the Environment Ministry, and for Energy supplies. At the outset she says PM Modi had suggested the need for such White Paper by 2015 so that future generations would know what had happened in India that failed the country at a time when China had already joined the community of developed nations. The issues go back to the coal scandal when coal auctions had to be cancelled by the Supreme Court for irregularities, the misuse of state owned banks leading to a large increase in non performing loans, and the mismanaged Commonwealth Games under government before 2014.  Sitharaman told parliament this had the effect of national security being compromised, Environment as a Ministry becoming a bottleneck, and the leadership failing the country. In the military there was a critical shortage of ammunition and equipment. She cites the Defense Minister at the time having the attitude that independent India has had a policy for many years not to develop the border areas, as an undeveloped border was better than a developed border. She also says Ministry stated that 92% of the Defense Budget was used up and major acquisitions have to wait for the military. Following this Sitharaman cited the scandals of that period and leakages of funds that weakend the country and failed its people. She compared capital expenditures today of 6.22 lakh crores in 2024 thre times the number in 2013 of 2.53 crores. HAL now makes Tejas jets and helicopters in Made in India production. At the Environment Ministry the delays that were 86 days reached a high of 316 days by 2013 for approval of development projects, with 355 projects pending, the nation brought to a standstill with the effects of the coal supplies to thermal power plants being wholly inadequate and Coal India in poor shape. White women have voted for Democrats only twice in 1964 and 1996, both times for southern Democrats, Lyndon Johnson from Texas in 1964 and Bill Clinton from Arkansas. Biden losing margin with white women was 11 percentage points Harris was 5 points. Knowing this it is not clear how the idea of depending on the women's vote was a reliable strategy. Considering that women also vote for the pocketbook, the economy and the cost of living issues were twice as important for Republican/Democrat women than other issues. Latino men margin for Clinton was 31 points, for Biden this dropped to 23 points, for Harris this dropped way down as Latino men swung sharply away from Democrats to give a plus 10 point margin for Trump a swing of 33 percentage points. Harris won Latino women by 22 points compared to 44 points for Clinton. The whole strategy Democrat women candidates trying to appeal to men, or use women as an offset for losses with men has not worked. Part of this is also that the economy is also a factor for women.    ...

Bezos is stepping down from the day to day role of CEO to focus on new growth opportunities. His role as CEO will be taken by the head of the cloud computing business, Andy Jassy. He joined in 1997. Amazon was started in 1994.  Amazon's growth comes from carefully focussing on specific growth fields, first retail, then cloud computing, and changing the way business is run with innovative ways of conducting business. One click and Prime in retail, Kindle e reader in books, and massive investments in logistics, warehousing, cloud computing to run its business efficiently. During the pandemic criticism of low wages for warehouse workers was met with an increase in wages to $15 an hour.  Management style discourages meetings. Most meetings are held in the morning, and after 10 am. The person presenting is asked to hand out a six page memo which is read in silence before the meeting. The idea is that writing it out helps make the ideas clear. Decisions are made in this way. Employees are asked to think in innovative ways to run the business. Thrift is practiced as part of the Bezos way. Bezos is relatively young, only 57 years. Bezos was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1964 when his mother was in high school. His mother married a Cuban immigrant, Miguel Bezos 4 years later and the boy took the name Bezos. He spent much time at his grandparents ranch in South Texas working on the farm, and went to school at Princeton University, graduating in 1987. In 1993 he married Mackenzie Tuttle, a novelist, then started an online bookstore called Amazon from Seattle. Before this he worked at a telecom company and at a hedge fund, which helped him finance his new online bookstore. Tony Hayward, current CEO of BP, was head of production during the fire and explosion incident at its Texas City, Texas, refinery. BP failed to contain the damage to its reputation during that incident, when it was disclosed that there was neglect of plant maintenance and quality at the refinery by government safety agencies, and by former engineers and directors of Amoco who had operated the plant before BP. The CEO at the time Mr Browne bought Amoco in 1998. To cut costs he did not replace hundreds of engineers who had left, and BP became more dependent on subcontractors. In July 2005 after Hurricane Dennis, Thunder Horse, BP's $1 billon development in the Gulf of Mexico had design and engineering problems and listed 20 degrees. In March 2006, 267,000 gallons of crude oil leaked out of a 34 inch pipe connected to the TranAlaska pipeline, maintained by BP. On August 8, 2006, the U.S. government ordered closure of the entire oil production of Alaska because of what it cited as "severe corrosion," because BP had not done the proper maintenance for the pipeline and its quality systems had failed. By this time Mr Browne's reputation had suffered and he was forced to retire. Tony Hayward is now being criticized for not moving quickly enough in establishing good quality, maintenance and safety systems at BP. The problem of BP not taking responsibility to properly oversee contractors down to the details and make sure all safety steps are taken is evident from the comment by Robert Wine a BP spokesman in London. He said that the responsibility was Transocean's (the company operating the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon), saying something that would not be accepted in the public mind or in oil circles in Houston, that "it's not BP's role to second guess Transocean or to oversee the safety of the rig." Exxon for example imposes detailed requirements on its subcontractors and second guesses its subcontractors on the details. BP did not require Transocean to install acoustic back-ups used in the North Sea to trigger the blow-out preventer in the Gulf drilling area....

The southern U.S. which was early to reopen the economy after the lockdown with some states having only partial lockdowns, is emerging from the coronavirus in much better shape than the rest of the U.S. The unemployment rate fell to 6.9% in August, the lowest of any region. The number of people employed was only 6% lower in August than in February, when most of the U.S. went into lockdown, compared with declines of 10.6% in the Northeast, 8.2% in the West, and 7% in the Midwest. Some of this was a result of aggressive reopening in Texas and other southern states. Overall deaths in the south were 60 per 100,000 people compared to 132 in the Northeast including New York and New Jersey, Midwest at 52, and West at 40. The Northeast numbers are high because of the elderly in nursing homes hit hard in New York and New Jersey.  In the southern states by comparison the deaths came later and among young people taking risks. The virus hit the northeast early and parts of the midwest, southern states had the advantage of some of the work already being initiated in March to fight the virus nationwide. Many of these states are also Republican and residents feared the virus much less. Republican Governors followed their instincts and aggressively reopened putting the economy first. The numbers tell the story. In South Carolina 44% of Republicans say they aren't afraid of the virus outbreak in the local area, compared to just 2% of Democrats, according to Civiqs poll. Georgia and Florida have similar numbers, all with Republican Governors. One factor favoring southerners is that cities in the south are much less dense and less populated than in the North and West. Smaller cities than Los Angeles and New York. ...

The new price of the Leaf is $35,200 for the 2012 model year as more features were made standard by Nissan. The Leaf will now cost $27,700 after a $7,500 federal tax credit in the U.S. The higher price also reflects the stronger yen as the Leaf is made in Japan. Every Leaf is sold from a waiting list, with sales in only some states- including Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Washington. Nissan's marketing chief, Brian Carolin, says about 1000 vehicles a month will be sold for the remainder of 2011. The average customer of the Leaf drives the car with an all electric range of 75 miles, for 30 miles each day and charges it for 3 hours a day. Average household income is $140,000. The 2012 standard model comes with a cold weather package, heated seats, battery warmer and steering wheel, and a fast charging arrangement that gets it recharged in 30 minutes, instead of the 8 hours.

Analysis by the Wall Street Journal shows companies in the S&P 500 stock index earned second quarter profits of $189 billion. This was up 38% from 2009, without the inflation adjustment. For all American companies, Commerce Department estimates second quarter after tax profits rose to an annual rate of $1.208 trillion, up 3.9% from the first quarter, and up 26.5% from year earlier. Companies are doing this with layoffs of workers, closing less profitable units, and shifting work to cheaper locations, and introducing more efficient processes. Texas Instruments shut down a unit making cellphones, Electronic Arts pruned its videogames by about 50%. These profit increases were achieved by reducing costs on flat or declining sales compared to 2008, just prior to the financial crisis. Companies are not expected to increase spending through new hiring or adding equipment in the current economic environment. From the Journal's analysis of the 500 S&P companies, it shows sales were 6% less than 2008, with second quarter profits 10% higher....
