U.S. student performance slips on national test - The Washington Post

The National Assessment of Educational Progess (NAEP) test scores in the U.S. for K-12 show a lack of progress since 2013. Scores for math and reading dropped for 8th grade students, and scores for reading were stagnant while dropping in math for 4th grade students. The test scores reflect progress in rural, suburban, urban environments, for communities that are affluent, less affluent and poor, different ethnic backgrounds. The test started in 1990 is the only one measuring national progress. The new results of NAEP are on a scale of 0 to 500, and show that in 2015 64 percent of 4th graders and 66 percent of eighth graders were not reading proficient, 60 percent of 4th graders and 67 percent of 8th graders were not math proficient. Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, do much better in the tests than Mississippi and New Mexico. Experts say a state to state comparison should separate the non native English speaking students from native English speaking, especially in states like Texas. With about two thirds of students failing the math and reading proficiency levels, growing proportions of minority Hispanic students in many states, larger proportion of less affluent students, the tests show the challenges facing America's K-12 education even after the changes introduced by Education Secretary Duncan since 2008.

How 65% of students failing reading comprehension and 75% failing civics and history is holding back America.

The scores on National Assessment of Education Progress NAEP show two thirds of students failing reading proficiency, similar math scores, and over 75% failing civics and history. This has a serious effect on everything in society- the ability to get good jobs, to increase incomes, to teach their own children to create a better future, for the overwhelming majority of Americans. This has not changed for about two decades and is only getting worse. Nothing that Silicon Valley or capital markets have done, or successive governments have done so far for 2 decades is changing this situation. What Biden calls the struggle for the Soul of the Nation has this as the probable cause because lack of reading comprehension affects everything and leads to serious deterioration and breakdown in society. What is sometimes called technology is not really technology, computers yes, but not social media which damages the capacity for clear thinking and in the young of mental health also or what passes for technology that takes everything to the lowest common denominator including Google Search as shown in Lyrarc's Movement for Global Literacy.

With a majority of children in California, Texas, and some midwestern states in the U.S. from less affluent or poor backgrounds, and about two thirds of all American students failiing to meet required proficiency in math and reading at 8th grade, the educational challenge of of creating a well qualified work force to build America's future is daunting. Eight years of policy changes in education and private efforts have failed to produce adequate results.
