This was one of the last reports written by Anthony Shadid, New York Times foreign correspondent, before his death in Syria. It covers the Islamist movement's shift to modernism and incorporating an outlook that includes ideas of liberal democracy from Britain, as seen from Tunisia. No longer is the main source of ideas coming from Egypt. A diverse group of thought is being developed in Arab and North Africa, and in places like London, where emigres from the Middle East during the years of repression gathered to discuss ideas for the future. Said Ferjani's as one of these emigres is one of sources of the new thinking and approaches of Islamist thought.

How the Muslim world sees America, early in the Obama administration.

01/05/2009

Not much has changed, and in Pakistan it has become more unfavorable after Obama speeches in Cairo and Ankara. The Islamic world and the Middle East has not changed much and some experts say the Arabs see Obama as more rhetoric than substance.

Pakistan groping for a new identity after failure of religion in the state.

09/29/2006

The failure of Islam as astate ideology to give Pakistan peace with its neighbors, and to modernize Pakistan. Instead of working it has proved dysfunctional and led to failures in economic development, failure in building ademocratic state, and left the country in abackward state with many divisions along political and tibal lines. The new identity being sought would keep Islam out of politics and set new priorities.

Islamist and Muslim Brotherhood rebels did a lot of the hard fighting against the Gaddafi regime and Belhaj is one of the leaders running the capital Tripoli. See the interview with Belhaj by Rod Nordland in the New York Times, Sept. 1, 2011. Belhaj says he is grateful to NATO and the West for the help in fighting Gaddafi and holds no rancor- even though he was turned over to the Gaddafi regime by the CIA in this amazing account by Nordland.

01/27/2011

Roger Cohen of the New York Times calls the street protestors in Tunisia and Egypt "revolutionary Geeks." They are young, pragmatic, looking mainly to be free of the shackles of despotic regimes and the lack of economic opportunity. The one party rule of the Tunisian ruler, of Mubarak and Quadaffi add up to one hundred years of despotism says Cohen. The failure of President Obama and Hillary Clinton to take a clear stand in support of change and in favor of democracy in the Arab world.

Setting a new direction for the Arab and Muslim world.

01/06/2008

Obama's Cairo speech set the tone. But realities on the ground such as achieving reconciliation and efforts to work together among all political parties and factions as the US leaves Iraq, is crucial to set a new direction on the ground. Friedman says Iraq, Pakistan and Afghaistan are part of the same war. And he points out what other experts are saying that in Afghanistan what is done there stays there. Baghdad has the potential for setting anew direction for the Muslim world, as it has been a centre of education, culture and influence in the Muslim world, in the manner Cairo has.
